This wee gem, 110 comments and counting, from the Evergreen State College comm on LJ -

Does anyone know whats up with all the lil asian children hanging around campus? Theres like 50 of 'em, aged maybe 12 to 20.

Did the college rent out space for some sort of lil asian kid convention?

???

Wackiness ensues. Bon appetit.

ETA: Bahleeted, but archived by the courteous hand of the_wanlorn here.

So...did the idiots frothing to be the first to cry racism even get the point of the question?

When I was at UCLA we got groups of "lil asian kids" (Japanese high schoolers on their school trips) all the time because it was apparently a stop on the "see the sights of LA" tour or something. And yeah, it was very odd the first time I saw 50+ Japanese kids in their school uniforms tramping around campus, despite the fact that UCLA has a very high percentage of Asian students (and in my major, an even higher percentage). It's the fact that they were high schoolers that was weird.

I don't really have anything to say about the wank, so I'm just going to sit over here waving a little, "Olympia, yay!" flag. Even though I haven't lived there for around four years.

*also waves Oly flag* I lived there for ten years, most of my childhood.

Ah, Olympia. So colorful due to the odd combination of government workers and aging hippies from ESC. It's so like pretentious college students to get all righteous about stuff.

::waves the Oly flag too::

am missing Oly like WHOA! as I just recently moved from there. For a small town, it's got a most interesting mix of ethnicities, political orientations and cultural stuff...

So do y'all want to send me tips, or something?

If it rains today, it will be 33 days in a row, equalling the record set the year after I was born in old St. Petes.

TESC, 1974, and my elder spawn is a sophomore there now.

Or should I go to the Spar and have a milk shake and think of you?

I thought it didn't rain on Saturday, breaking the streak, but nobody seems to know whether that's true.

Just reinforcing the rumor that college students sleep late on Saturdays? (and don't read the Zero)

Rained, hard, around 6am Saturday morning, and again just before midnight. The string is unbroken.

Personally, I could live without the honor.

Aha. Here I was thinking nothing in the world happens before 7 am.

The Zero?

The Olympian.

You know, the thing with the garage sale ads and the letters to the editor blaming everything bad on Evergreen students?

Oh, that thing. My family always called it the Daily O, but now I will adopt this new name. (I kind of stopped reading the paper when I lived in the dorms, where they don't deliver. And now I'm wondering if they deliver in Cooper's Glen. Hmmm...)
More importantly, what's your kid studying? I'm not a sophomore, but I transferred last year so I know a bunch of them.

He's in Chuck Pailthorpe's program, which has something to do with government. He's tall, rangy, bearded, and rather solitary.

So far his career plans include "not farming."

CRIPES, who the hell pissed in the drinking water?

Sure, the OP wasn't really that well worded and maybe a tiny bit ignorant, but that really didn't warrant the waves of 'OMG U R A XENOPHOBIC ASSHOLE DIE'.

Evergreen, as much as I love the place, is the world headquarters of political correctness (which is often defined in its original Trotskyite terms).

The year my husband graduated, one of the speakers used the phrase "Racism, sexism, and homophobia" no less than 125 times in her (interminable) ten minute speech.

One of my friends left school when she was repressively refused to paint a mural on the raw concrete walls of the Student Services Building using her own menstrual blood.

It's an unusual kind of school. Most of the notable alumni are cartoonists (including Matt Groening and Lynda Barry).

Sadly, all I can do is nod in sage agreement. As surreal as it is to have my undergrad being wanked, it's almost more shocking that it's never happened before.

Oh, if the internet had been around back in the day when computer services was all teletypes and modems that connected via telephone handset, it would have been wanked way earlier, probably one of the times that the CPJ tried to take down KAOS.

This is making me terribly nostalgiac, and I'm not even sure why. Probably the lack of performance art on my morning walk to classes.

There have been some choice wanks in the past couple of years, but since many of them involved close friends of mine (friends of mine saying things like "Please don't be racist kthx" in a mostly civil manner, but nonetheless), I didn't feel like reporting them. But now there's another f_wer on there, I won't have to. Hooray!

Amusing note:

Come mid-February, Evergreen State College does have a mini anime convention at it. ChibiChibiCon.

Just because I had to record it somewhere: 34 days of rain, one after the other.

Blub, blub, blub.
