Amazon Review Wank (Other Than Anne Rice)
Via a mouse on [info]wank_report: Now, a book with a title like "Women Who Make the World Worse: and How Their Radical Feminist Assault Is Ruining Our Schools, Families, Military, and Sports" couldn't POSSIBLY spawn wank, could it?

Accusations of Amazon deleting one-star reviews, references to an apparent passage about Sex in the City, and jabs at both the Left and the Right abound. Many of the reviews speak for themselves. Some highlights:

D. Taylor "Closet Reader" (five stars; [the title of the review is the same as the book's title]): Kate hit the nail right on the head. This book was so well researched and written. Fact don't lie and anyone taking execption to this book had better read it first and then check the facts.

Jane Austen (one star; "Don't Waste Your Time or Money"): Kate O'Beirne mananges to write a lengthy book of her opinions, which are supported by nothing but venom. She cites little or no supporting documentation for her misogynistic views. It's unfortunate that a woman who clearly benefited in her career from the work of women before her is so willing to trash those who paved the way. If you believe that women are inferior to men (clearly Ms. O'Beirne, herself excluded, believes this), this is the book for you.

W. Vaughn (five stars, "The Truth is Difficult to Fight"): Kate's got it right. For those of you posting reviews that have NOT actually read the book, might I suggest you do.

Knee-jerk liberal reaction is common when the subject, as so often is (because it's true), the damage that liberals have wrought on this country. Kate O'Beirne is no knee-jerker though. The book is thoroughly researched, impeccably foot-noted, and I'm sure was vetted to Nth degree by the Publisher's lawyers.

If you're interested in facts and not accusations, read the book!

annburns "cuda" (one star, "Just so bad..."): Well, I went out today and read this at Borders. Thought I should at least give it a chance. It was like listening to your conspiracy laden batty aunt for two hours.

I have read the book. It's just tedious. Unlike "The War Against Boys", it provokes nothing but fatigue.

Also, Amazon has deleted a bunch of one star reviews and left all the five star reviews. Be careful. Google might be fighting the good fight but Amazon, yahoo, msn, ... are not. I'm sure this review will be disappeared in a few minutes, so for now - be careful what you buy.

One review in particular gave me pause:

Mark Barbieri (five stars; "Just Say No!"): Speech codes have really helped on our college campuses. We need to spread them from the campuses and around the world. Hate speech like this should be banned! I am a zealous supporter of a woman's right to choose (except, of course, for choosing silicone breast implants, choosing to stay at home with their children, or choosing their children's school), but this is one choice we MUST protect them from. Buy (or steal) all of the copies of this book and burn them! No more lies! Destroy the haters!

Finally, what huge wank is truly complete without outright sarcasm?

T.J. Brown (five stars; "Awesome Book that I have not read!"): Hey everyone! I have not read this book! That's OK, because this apparently is not a requirement to review a book. I do know that Kate O'Beirne is a brilliant conservative ideologue, and that even if one doesn't agree with her, O'Beirne's arguments give one food for thought.

I might buy this book, but I might not. I actually have a stack of other books on my nightstand. I just finished reading The Chicago Bears and Super Bowl XX: The Rise and Self-Destruction of the Greatest Football Team in History by John Mullin. It's a fun, easy read on the cultural phenomenon that was the 1985 Chicago Bears. I'd recommend that to anyone in a second.

I'd guess that if you're conservative, or if you like provocative and well-researched arguments, you'd like O'Beirne's book. But, honestly I don't know what the book's about. It could be about the 1964 Phillies for all I know. You can't judge a book by its cover, right?

But don't you think it's a little strange that Amazon will let anyone review a book, even if said person did not buy the book from Amazon? So, yeah, I'd say this review is as helpful as any of the others on this page!

And that's just a sample-- there's plenty more where that came from!

Assuming the book is about how all those things suck & assuming that he realizes 5 stars is code for "ockin' book", then yes.

If not, I rescind my love for him.

O'Beirne tackles a wide range of issues, from childcare to sports to women in the military, claiming: "Only the French looked to a teenage girl to lead them into battle."

Yeah, and look how bad that turned out for them!

My puny ladybrain thinks that the author could have corrected this erroneous assumption with a bit of research, along with her assumptions that 1) Joan of Arc is the only female to lead a battle in all of history, and 2) "French" is some sort of an insult. Clearly, such reliance on "research" and "facts" is part of my feminine shortcomings.

I'm still bemused by the thought that anyone would call Hillary Clinton (or, for that matter, Ginsburg or Dowd) a radical feminist. Maybe O'Beirne is just in desperate need of a blow on the head dictionary.

Apparently the wacky fundies don't really know who radical feminists are. Rick Santorum got asked the question one time and all he came up with was Gloria Steinem. And he wasn't even sure of her name. *headdesk*

Jesus' General, a left-wing humor blog, has been leading the assault on this book for some time. He's quite proud of it and has fought to have his reviews spotlighted:

http://patriotboy.blogspot.com/2006_01_08_patriotboy_archive.html#113694739113282791

http://patriotboy.blogspot.com/2006_01_15_patriotboy_archive.html#113745754899806527

He's done this before, most notably with Rick Santorum's books. You can always spot his reviews because he mentions his wife, ofJoshua.

And no, I wasn't involved in either wank.

Hmm, I thought for sure I'd have nothing to comment about with my brand-new account, and here I am already. Thanks for letting me on board, and I'm sure you will all let me know if I've messed up in any way. (I'm deliberately not messing with the links just yet, so I apologize for these being sloppy.)

[info]rachelmap

Too bad it got deleted.

I found many truths in Mrs. O'Beirne's book, truths so self-evident that I have to wonder why no one has stated them until now. For instance, how could anyone argue with her assertion that feminists exploit female war casualties to "advance the feminist agenda of androgyny and abortion." Even I have to admit that every time I hear that another woman has been sacrificed in our glorious Iraq adventure, I'm tempted to tell my wife, Ofjoshua, to throw on a pair of jeans, head for the nearest women's health clinic, and help them slaughter a whole passel of blastocyst-Americans.

But I think it's her frequent attacks against the television show, "Sex in the City," that I value most about this book. By promoting the myth that women should enjoy sex, that show has done more to destroy the institution of marriage than even homosexual unions. I think most men will agree with me when I say that there isn't a woman alive who isn't thoroughly repulsed by sex. Telling them that it should be a pleasant experience rather than a vomit-inducing one only serves to cause them to resent their husbands when the impossible isn't delivered. Hopefully, this book will help destroy that myth.

As much as I enjoyed this book, I can't give it more than a single star because it has a fatal flaw. It promotes the most destructive myth of all, the existence of lesbianism. Mrs. O'Beirne discusses it throughout the book as if it is something that is real. She doesn't seem to be able to understand that women can't have sex with each other. They don't have little soldiers.

If Amazon had just left that review up, there wouldn't have been as big a war between the 5-star and 1-star reviewers. They got what they deserved (wanted perhaps?) when they took it down. Did they expect the patriot who created the Yellow Elephant Campaign and came up with the slogan, "An armed fetus is a safe fetus" to go away quietly? Dude, he has minions.

Sorry to keep posting on this thread, but the battle over the books and the right to post snarky reviews is continuing on several other blogs, complete with a list of books one is not, under any circumstances, to comment on negatively:

http://blogs.salon.com/0002874/2006/01/24.html#a2100

Why do I think they're going to have a hard time following their own advice?

The New Ann Coulter
by Ann Coulter (Hardcover - June 6, 2006)

The hell? They're unleashing a new Ann Coulter on the world?!? Sure, the old one is awfully rancid (and ready to crumble into dust), but to bring forth a new one would be mocking God, and asking for annihilation..

And Atrios is also worried about the feelings of the "delicate flowers" on the right, but not so much he doesn't reproduce this review of Frist's book:

This is a fascinating study of the extraordinary mix of in-breeding, animal sacrifice, and corruption required to produce the world's worst human being. Coming from a family of mildly despicable cheats, the Frists had a leg up on normal human beings...but it still took an enormous amount of laboratory work and careful training to produce not just a self-involved twit but an unspeakable monster.

This book is Frankenstein of our century, a marvellous account of the line between science and morality, and the "Dr. Frist" character is a chilling reminder of the true evil inherent in all humanity...even if readers will find Dr. Frist himself an impossibly overdrawn character. Surely, no actual human could be so evil. Neverthless, he stands like Shelley's monster as an emblem of the path we as a species must never take.

By damning this "Dr. Frist" character and the bizarre process that created him, this sterling work serves as a moral guide, a hope for the future.

So...Ann Coulter is writing under an assumed name now?

Anyway, I'm just amused that any author would bring this to the table and not expect wank - honey, you bash feminism, and you'll be surrounded by armed bastards in like 0.5 seconds. /Life on Mars

Of course, maybe the author is a troll in published form and this is exactly what she was aiming for all along.
