Current mood:tired
Current music:the new Tegan and Sra album. It sucks.

poor kids can wank too!
And this used to be such a nice community.

This one's about class, and some book with a stupid title, and blahblahblah.

I love the 'You really need to listen to me because I'm the bearer of great wisdom, and if you don't it's just the sort of destructive mindset this book/religion/spring diet would cure if you gave it a chance' sort of preacher.

This is off-topic, but the girl in your icon is Stephanie Brown, right?

Not the OP, but I've met him too, and he is *so nice*. Amazingly nice.

And probably you could ask and touch his hair. I know he will hug people on request.

I just turned into a gibbering idiot and said things like "boook.... goooood."

Oh yes... I was at one of his signings and he really was nice. If the venue hadn't stuck him behind a huge table I would have gotten a hug (he said so! and I hadn't asked... I did give him a bottle of BPAL's Shub-Niggurath, tho) but I did get a handshake.

This is why I never want to actually meet any writers I admire. Because I'd be planning all kinds of intelligent questions and discussions we'd be having, except then I'd actually meet them, and every single thought I ever had would flee my brain, and I'd end up annoucing, loudly, "I LIKE CHEESE."

In all-caps, yes.

*laugh*

I did something similiar when I met Dave Duncan at a Con. I'd heard he was the guest of honour, but my copies of all his books are literally in tatters, I've read them so much and dragged them across half the world.

But, a friend of mine is a Con Organizer, and dragged me over to meet him. "Oh, she was too embrassed to come to your book signing, you see. Say something, notjo!"

Me: I--uh... I... I really like your books, and now I have to go away....

I guess my friend told him *everything* I was saying over breakfast about how I love his books and why and all this stuff. So, yeah, I kinda met Dave Duncan.

I hid the rest of that con. :)

AHAHAHA! Yes! That would be exactly how I'd act, too. On the bright side, this means that when I become a Rich And Famous WriterTM myself, I'll be able to actually hold conersations about cheese with my fans. Because screw all this writerly stuff, cheese is god, and thus makes for a much more interesting topicof conversation!

If he hugged/touched me, I would just lay my head down and snuggle. (While hyperventilating.)

I almost asked him if he wanted to come live in my basement and eat my cookies. (In a non-sexual sense. *grin*) Instead, I said "Oh my god, it's you!" and that was apparently my question. (There was a Q&A, you see... he laughed. He's great!)

I have this thing for... fan-authors, you know? I mean, Neil Gaiman seems to *get fans*. He has his blog, which he updates regularily, he responds to emails and fan mail (well, someone does!), and all sorts of other things. He communicates with them. Diane Duane is, too, although seemingly to a lesser extent, but that may be because I read her blog and not her LJ. (Same content, but there may be more feedback going on there in the comments.)

A lot of authors aren't like that... they don't get the web, don't really get fandom. (Apparently Neil Gaiman's read RPS involving him... and only the once. He acknowledges fanfiction, but of course doesn't read it... and has said outright "No, I'm not writing it.") I think this may be why so many adult fans take issue with things JKR has said. They're expecting her to relate to them like other writers that are 'active' on the net do. Whereas JKR seems to relate to her 'target' audience (kids and young adults) much better than to adult fans.

And this went on way too long, and I think got way off topic. I should get either a t-shirt or an icon (or both!) that says "And next, my thoughts on yaoi." *grin*

He is, he so totally is. I had my hair up next to his a few years ago, and one of the main things I remember is being impressed with how fluffy and springy his was.

I'd asked him for a photo together, which he was kind enough to do. At the time the only camera I had was my big semi-pro Nikon SLR, which was finishing off a roll of 1600-speed film. I had it set to really low-light settings, because 1600 is what you use to take pictures in a cave without using the flash. So when I handed the camera off to my sister and she took the picture, the flash didn't go off.

And Neil seemed quite concerned about that. He asked me if we should try another, and I started stammering through the same basic explanation as above. I think I got through about "Oh, it'll be fine, bec-" before he said that he thought we should, just to be sure, and pulled me back next to him.

They both came out just fine, the first picture, and the one that I had my sister put all the switches to "auto" for. I've always liked his writing, but that's what made me fall so hopelessly in love with Neil himself.

You know, the thing is, there's a decent enough point buried in there about generational poverty and how it propagates and all, but it got lost in the way she presents it. (Story of the internet, eh?)

*nodnod* Which is one of the most annoying arguments ever, to me. Teeth on edge, people! And this chick (haven't read the book, so i don't know if the writer does the same) especially is basically taking generational poverty and holding it up as proof that the poor only have themselves to blame, which just. What? And I'll shut up, I swear, I just had to get that off my chest. I'll go back to my porn, now.

Isn't that... social darwinism, sort of? Didn't we try that? And it didn't work?

My favourite was the very first response, with the girl who was irritated because she had money, first time in her family, and then her husband "frivolously" contracted cancer. She asked the OP if the more prudent thing would have been to let him die.

Get a grip on yourself before you assume I'm dissing poor Aunt Sally who is dying from leukemia and just read the book before you berate me on what you THINK the book MIGHT possibly say. I'm in much the same situation as many of you.
