Pixies with Helicopter Rotors
I bring you love!

And [info]otherkin wank.

[info]gerbilsage posts a ranty beef about Otherkin, specifically, his/her perception that Otherkin cry oppression when they alter their definitions from the familiar. (Note: I think it was funny, but I'm trying to be fair and balanced so I'm not oppressing anybody.) In her hypothetical example, pixies fly via helicopter rotors, and if you're thinking of the traditional wee winged pixie, you're committing oppression. Which makes "normal" Otherkin who aren't trying to create spiders with six legs and helicopter rotors much more attractive to non-Otherkin who don't want to have to identify their mates using conceptual art.

I am of the opinion that this is [info]gerbilsage trolling, but s/he is very good at it, so of course several members of [info]otherkin take the bait. Highlights:

Everyone has their interpretation (a.k.a. the "OMG don't judge" suite in C minor), and vampires that shoot fire from their eyes as a matter of routine, and it's unreasonable to assume that "vampire" means blood-sucking bat-dude;

Something of the same species is still a different species;

The conceptual art I mentioned earlier;

And [info]gaelfling, who brings up his heritage as an Irish mythical turtlecat (or whatever that thing was, which it wasn't, it was some kind of pixie who may have had helicopter rotors, but "turtlecat" is fun to type and I'll pay $50 for one!) in a bid to win the argument, naturally gets offended that his was the post linked to.

Best line, I think, goes to [info]gerbilsage, here: Which D&D character did you have to play as to get tenth level Non Sequitur?

I bring you peace!

I think "ranty beef" is my new favourite phrase.

I think this is also the number one reason I dislike otherkin. You can say you're a unicorn, that's fine. But if you're a unicorn with like, eight horns, you're not a unicorn. I'm sorry. Saying you are invalidates the concept of unicorns, and sort of invalidates every other unicorn otherkin, because you can't all be mythical beasts if your mythical beast is not the same as everyone else's.

If your super secret inner being is mythical, a non-canon definition of it either makes it impossible for you to be a "real" mythical creature, or it makes everyone else's canon wrong.

/ rant.

Otherkin is illogical.

Gerbilsage is very much a troll. He's been here, star of this one and also showed up randomly in this one.

I'm surprised the otherkin are taking the bait. Bloody stupid dragons.

Troll or not, Gerbilsage as a point. If you say you're a horse with scales. You're not a horse. You might have thing else like a horse, you might look like a horse, but you're not one.

Personally, I find it hard to take anyone who says, "I am a dragon/pixie/turtlecat/whatever! No, really! This is just my human form!" seriously, regardless of how they choose to describe it. But that's just me. It's one thing to believe you are spiritually connected to something in some way, but it's another to say you actually ARE this creature and can change into it or whatever. Sorry, those hands typing on the keyboard are definitely not wolf paws, dragon claws, or turtlecat . . . appendages. They are most definitely human.

I think I love you for that. Just a little. It's all... calmly-stated, and reasonable. And stuff. Can I be your devoted slave for at least the next half-hour?

"I feel that a wolf is a good representation of certain aspects of my spiritual/psychological makeup..." is cool and fine, if not really my thing exactly. "Yay I'm a wolf!" gets you laughed at.

So... why do you "get" being connected to an external mythical entity, and yet the idea that being a (whatever) is a part of your identity as a person is invalid because it's not based on your genetics and physical appearance?

I was under the impression that the "I" in "I am yada yada" generally refers to your soul or psychological identity or capital-S Self or whatever idea or combination of ideas you personally use for... well... "this is the inner me". Why does "are" magically mean "genotypically are" when and only when you're referring to species as opposed to gender or personality or any other traits?

Semantic disagreements suck. :P

I think there's actually a distinction between 'normal' otherkin and people who consider themselves to actually be able to change into the animal in question. You know, like lycanthropes or... 'thropes of some sort. I think they sometimes call themselves 'weres,' like 'werewolf.' Which is just insanely stupid, since 'were' means, wait for it........... MAN.

I could find links to back myself up, but I'm not going to because I'm lazy and I think it's all bullshit anyway.

Call me a 'racist oppressor' (OMG!!11!!1!1), but if someone tells me they're otherkin, I'm not dating them. I'm sorry. I will be your friend. I won't judge you as a bad person. I will, however, judge you as a crazy person. And I don't date crazy. Not unless you're really rich and I can steal half your shit in a year when I remember how crazy you are.

Also, the shelled-octopussy looks like a fucked up Pokemon. I kind of want one for a pet... but only if it can tentacle-rape inferior pets... like rabbits.

Why are otherkin needing to cry oppression anyway? The state of being "other" should not intrude on one's real and normal life, people. This isn't like being gay or black or a woman or any number of people who've genuinely, you know, been oppressed. It is mental. It is internal. And if you are here living in this "mundane" world right now, you are going to have to do so effectively, so that you can continue to be a contributing member of society. Human or NOT.

Fuckers.
