Well... I'm lost, I'm angry, and I'm armed. ([info]komorebi) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

Welcome to the world of useless_facts! Who'da thunk the truth about humans was so easy to sum up? Specifically, this 'truth' is that humans are clearly natural herbivores, judging by their teeth compared to existing carnivores and omnivores.

Wank spews back and forth, with 'justification for vegetarians', folks fuming at PETA, resentment for oppression via dental records, biological anthropology lessons gone horribly wrong, and the brilliantly confusing ETA bon mot from the OP:

Note: Please don't think I'm trying to say "GO VEGETARIAN" or anything. I'm just stating facts. You can SEE the fact so don't go all HASTY on me.

Edit: I don't feel like responding back to all the bombarded comments so here, the teeth part is a "theory". Not in my mind though, but a theory for most of you guys. It's a pretty damn great theory if you ask me.

But humans not needing meat to survive is a fact. GET OVER IT.

Hi-larious, either way. Gonna go gnaw on a rock, now.

Yeah, but is it a vegetarian rock? Cuz if it's not, you're going against nature.

Just sayin'.

No, they aren't. Last time I checked insects do not qualify as plants.

And the stupid continues while I get ready for Microbiology class.

That still doesn't really change the fact that we're originally herbivores.
That just means we adapted to eating meat.

... christ. The vegetarians vs. meat-eaters debate. One of those times where I just want everybody to just _shut up_ already - the vegetarians with their weird justifications* and the meat-eaters with their smugness.

* - I mean, other than just preferring it or for health reasons or ethical ones. Personally, I really dislike the taste of meat - and the smell of it cooking. I prefer that it be heavily spiced into submission or all but drowning in teriyaki sauce. That said, I had a damned fine sandwich with pastrami not half an hour ago. mmm.

Dear pioushypocricy:

Please take a few moments to study physical anthropology and human evolution. Take particular note of the evolution of the maxilla and mandible (from protohuman to australopithecine to homo sapiens) and how this applies to changing diets.

Humans, on the other hand, hunted with tools (not by instinct, by thought) and cooked meat unlike any other animal. (We have to cook meat to digest it correctly)

Proof that the dodo is not an extinct species.

More importantly, did you know that if you google herbivore teeth to make sure you're not crazy and they don't have pointy teeth, you get fifty kajillion pictures of dinosaurs?

I love how s/he keeps going on about how it's important to do what's "natural," but when someone points out the vitamin deficiencies that come from not eating meat, it's justified with "but I can get it from all these fortified/enriched foods!" Yes, because soy milk is so natural.

Is there some sort of Vegetarian edict that teaches people this sort of thing? Here I thought a friend of mine, who's an on-again-off-again vegetarian, was unique when he came up with this exact same nonsensetheory. I swear this is the exact same conversation we had.

Friend: Human beings aren't meant to eat meat.
Me: What now?
Friend: No seriously, look at our teeth! We were meant to be herbivores
Me: Riiiight. Tell me something, how many stomachs do you have?
Friend: One
Me: And those pointy teeth thingies you got, what are they called?
Friend: Canines, but-
Me: What are canines for?
Friend: Tearing meat, but that doesn't mean-
Me: You don't happen to have a Cud, do you?
Friend: *heavy belligerent sigh* No
Me: Do you happen to know the enamel composition of our teeth vs herbivores vs carnivores?
Friend: *all surly and grumpy* No
Me: Well then get your ass to a biology book and stop talking stupid!

I love bringing up that conversation whenever he goes into one of his MEAT=EVIL mode. Honestly, people should eat what ever they choose to, and stop looking for justification to make themselves feel better.

I love veg*n (why does it get spelled like that, anyways?) arguments. If you don't want to kill animals, or don't like meat, fine. Nothing wrong with that. But don't be telling me that meat is bad for me, or that humans weren't supposed to eat meat, or some such bullshit reason. There are whole tribes of people who live on practically nothing but animal protien (meat, blood, milk, etc), and have done so for thousands of years. If meat was bad for humans, I doubt that they would have survived.
