Wank about slavery
Kitana starts a topic called "Slavery Wasn't That Bad!" And Other Nonsense. in Godawful Subcultures. It's meant to be about people who insist that the Holocaust wasn't really that bad, &c.

All is pretty normal, until Morganite, a newish member, starts in:

About the ""reparations" hoopla". Does anyone think about how far black people are from slavery? Not that far! Does everyone think after the civil war we all just moved into the subuarbs, started doing crack and dancing or something? Do you think you guys gave black people your all and we just blew it or something? My mother picked cotten for 20 years for 19 cents a pound and that was in the 60's! The effects of slavery still effect most African-Americans to this day (and there are still people who fuck themselves up but that's another story). Other oppresed people have been payed back like people from the Holocost and Kosovo, but Black people... That was so long ago! That dosn't effect you now!
End Rant

Of course, other people tell her to calm down. Tabari says, "if anyone deserves reparitions in the United States, I'd say it would be the Native Americans; they have first call, anyway." Morganite and Yukanobe disagree on whether or not black people always decide that they have it better than the Native Americans.

Morganite: We Blacks complain but the conversation always ends at "at least we aren't the Native Americans...

Yukanobe: Um, no. Not all of us do.

Morganite: Oh come on, you never have a some family over for breakfast or somthing and the conversation don't lead to that?

Doesn't everyone's?

I predict yet another "my education sucks," "no, it doesn't, that's easy," type wank, as people are arguing over whether or not everyone knows about Armenia. (For the record, I only learned about it through American Girl.)

DanAlwyn doesn't get it. I'm one of the targets of this thread I think. I've wasted all my empathy on crisis zones with casualty figures over 50,000. I've burned myself out in the process. I just can't seem to care anymore in a personal manner.

Yes, I'm a horrible human being. You can all yell at me now.

Kitana makes a humorous suggestion about Italians paying people of Celtic descent for enslaving them in the Roman Empire. But Morganite just doesn't get it. But pretty much everyone else who had some hardship in their past got bypased by a darker skinned culture and joined the former oppressors. When was the last time you saw any really poor Italian who couldn't just say they are white and go to college or something? There is no real seperation from Italians and other white cultures. Other people tell her that she's exaggerating, and we learn that she's not whining about white oppressors, Is annoying when white people complain about stuff. You rule the World, shut-up.

Im not whining about white oppressors, Is annoying when white people complain about stuff. You rule the World, shut-up. And second the minority scholarships are pretty much unobtainable for most black people unless you already go to a really, really good school. You have to have an obsene number of afterschool activites to be considered. And if you think thats not a problem, most schools don't have much past football, cheerleading, and newspaper. You don't get much unless you live in a good neighborhood or a really poor school the state took pity on.

Freezer is sane. Freezer: On the reparations subject, my personal take has always been: If my mother (who grew up in Mississippi in the 50s and 60s) and grandmother (sharecropper's wife) don't say anything about reparations or "the man owing us" or anything like that, I sure as hell ain't going to bitch about it and neither should anybody else my age or younger.

ETA: Sorry, I didn't realize that the Culture forum was locked (thought it was just Gabbery II). Registration isn't moderated, though, so I'm just going to get some highlights. Right? That's okay?

ETAA: The links do not work unless you're a GAFF member. I'm sorry. If you really want to see the posts, membership is completely free and unmoderated. I took highlights so you don't have to.
