THE POISSON MUST BE FRESH! ([info]rotten_fish) wrote in [info]otf_wank,

You're glib, man! You're GLIB!
Plagiarized totally from a mousey on [info]wank_report because I'm awesome like that.

Snopes reports on the rumor that women who have tattoos on their lower backs can't receive epidurals during childbirth. Over on the feed, a bit of peaceable discussion goes on before [info]melsmarsh announces, "I wouldn't worry about epidurals. Just go without medication unless you are having surgery. Its not like its painful in childbirth. Your body produces natural meds. (I homebirthed.)"

There is a collective WTF. Marvel as [info]melsmarsh explains to all us silly womenfolk that our pain is just in our heads!

As a special bonus, [info]chrissmari lets us know that "Sluts with tramp stamps need to be more worried about passing aids onto their unborn children than whether or not they can get an epidural." This could be sarcasm. It's hard to tell on the Snopes feed.

Things seem to be slowing down now, but there's some quality "heptatits" punning near the end.

Thanks, mousey! ::blows kiss::

Personally, I'd like to know why there aren't more Tom Cruise jokes. "You don't know the history of child birth! I DO!"

I was thinking of coming to report this, but I was waiting to see if melsmarsh would come back. She has stopped commenting, which I think is the reason the wank slowed down so quickly.

But don't forget! It's only silly Western womenfolk who experience pain in childbirth because Western culture has conditioned them to expect pain. Because as she points out:

Then why do no other cultures have pain? Think about it.

Ahhh. *thinks*

I've never gone through childbirth, and I never plan to, but somehow I have trouble believing that a process that regularly killed women before the advent of modern medicine is normally a pleasant undertaking. Is this one of those happy happy sparkle funtime or death situations? Like a Japanese game show?

This is nothing compared to the wank I've gotten into in a locked entry in her journal, with some guy (I think he's maybe a med student?) who claims that "childbirth is overrated."

What I basically said in my rep to her initial post is this:

Everyone has different pain thresholds and experiences a different level of pain during childbirth. Mine was so bad that I literally couldn't breathe. Literally. They had to put me on oxygen and yes, give me an epidural. Without that pain relief, there's no way I could have done what I needed to do to deliver my son. I've been tattooed several times, before and after childbirth, and even my most painful tatt has NOTHING on childbirth. Some people are lucky enough to have low pain levels during birth. Some aren't.

I don't even like hearing this shit about how pain management isn't necessary from women who *have* given birth, because every woman's situation is different. For some women, it really is a deeply painful experience, no matter what their mindset going in. I went in relaxed, hoping strongly for natural childbirth, and with a full complement of natural childbirth classes under my belt. Still needed the pain meds.

(The same guy who claimed that childbirth is overrated - yes, guy - also suggested that intubation would have been a viable alternative to pain management in my case.)

The person who thinks 50% of women died in childbirth, some from pure pain, lives on some planet for which I have not seen the mortality figures for other parts of the population.

Really. There's no way to make that math work, unless no adult females die of any other cause, and no females die before reproductive age.

My mum would rip that melsmarsh bint a new one. No pain in childbirth, my ass. I stopped counting how many times I've been told about how I and my twin sis put mum through utter Hell; they gave her an epidural and she was still in so much pain, she had to go in for a c-section.

In the process of coming into this world, I became the bane of mum's existence and thus far have done an admirable job of living up to that promising start. *wipes a solitary, proud tear from her eye*

Melsmarsh must be one of those who have the genetic defect of not being able to feel pain or is 100% delusional.

Nothing compares to childbirth pain. I've had toe breaks, chest pains so bad I was blacking out and was rushed to the hospital, root canals, ornament glass and cat whiskers imbedded in my feet, even an IV put in the top of my hand...and none of that was as bad as childbirth.

I even took the breathing classes and when that first contraction hit when I had my first, I pulled a possessed Linda Blair crossed with Hannibal Lecter asking for my painkillers. Even with an epidural, it hurt so much I squeezed my then hubby's hand so hard I dislocated fingers and to this day, the nurses still talk about the lengthy invectives that flew out of my mouth and was heard all the way to the waiting room.

With my second, she came so fast they didn't even have time to prep me for an IV much less give me painkillers and I did black out through much of the delivery to where they had to keep reviving me to push.

At this point I'd love to wallop Melsmarsh with a good sized cluebat to prove the theory of natural meds false as it is.

What the?? Why would having a tattoo on your lower back stop you being able to have an epidural? The tattoo is in the skin ... not the spin. I've got TWO on my lower back and they offered me epidurals for my first child.

Also - childbirth not painful? I'm willing to concede that there MIGHT be a case for saying that some women get so stressed out about it that it makes it worse ... but come on.

Your average 7 pound baby being pushed through a fairly small canal (admittedly, its stretchy, but not THAT stretchy) and then being forced though a tiny little hole at the end. A hole with rather often tears ... because tearing wouldn't hurt at all ... no. Definitely not. (sarcasm)

I've got a very high pain threshold - almost stupidly high, according to a couple of midwives ... high enough to birth a baby over 10 pounds with no meds what so ever. But you know what?

IT HURT!!!!

... Still can't get over that tattoo thing though.

This reminds me of a book my Mom gave me to explain sex and childbirth when I was ten. Among other outrageously stupid things(Mommy and Daddy have sex with robes covering their entire bodies, apparently), when the kid asked his Mom if giving birth to him hurt, she said, "Oh, only a little."

Even at ten, my first reaction was, "HURT A LITTLE, MY ASS." I marched down to my Mom, proclaimed that the book was crap, and showed her the offending passage. She agreed, and we had a lovely discussion on epidurals. There may be some women with a weird birthin' gene that gives them only a little pain, but WTF, that's NOT THE NORM.

Wow, sweeping generalization there. Lucky her that childbirth wasn't painful, but some people just don't feel a lot of pain. And she said she had a homebirth, and while she may not have had meds i know a lot of them use herbs and such that can have a pretty similar effect.

As for me - I've had 2 kids. And hell YES it hurt.
