The Internet Didn't Exist!
http://community.livejournal.com/mock_the_stupid/2119131.html?thread=50482907#t50482907

Some quotes verbatim, some not.

[info]mock_the_stupid post: Here is a small list of things that she made us write in our exercise books, under the illusion that in the 1900s...they weren't invented...

- Computers
- Televisions
- Supermarkets
- Bathrooms

Gee, technology sure has evolved in these past few years!

[info]littlekatydid: uh. you sure she didn't mean the DECADE 1900s? Like from 1900-1910? Cuz, yanno, those things didn't exist 100 years ago...

Other people: Uh, some things (bathrooms, especially) were invented then.

[info]littlekatydid: The toilet was invented (in America, where we for some stupid reason didn't learn from the Brits) in 1875. Somehow I doubt it was in common use by 1900.

[info]peebs1701: How on earth does "in common use" = "invented" By that definition the internet wasn't invented until at least the 90's.

[info]littlekatydid: The internet wasn't invented until the '90s. What we had before that was nothing that even vageuly resembles the internet. We had BBS's, a few networks such as TSN, etc, but these can hardly be called "the internet".

[info]peebs1701: world wide web != internet

[info]littlekatydid: www = internet.

[info]peebs1701: *links to Wiki article*

[info]littlekatydid: Right, because anyone interested in accuracy uses Wiki to prove a point. For all I know, you wrote that article. And besides, the system of interconnected systems didn't exist until the 90s. The military had theirs, but that didn't do any one else any good. Its kind of like the toilet. It might have tecnhically existed, but no one knew of it, or used it, so it may as well not have.

[info]fugaciouslover: Wow. For someone so interested in accuracy, you sure are free and easy with your convenient definitions.

I love the way you've decided that "just because the military had it doesn't mean it was *invented*, because they didn't share it with anyone else!"

The military had theirs, but that didn't do any one else any good. Its kind of like the toilet. It might have tecnhically existed, but no one knew of it, or used it, so it may as well not have.

BWAAA HAAA HAHAHAHAHA!

Wank ensues.

Why didn't Webster's inform me that "gay" only means "homosexual" these days?

I take it this also means that queer is defined only as homosexual, and no longer means weird, bizarre, or unusual. And that fairy, queen, and faggot also no longer mean a mythological winged creature, a female territorial ruler, and a small bundle of sticks used for lighting a fire, respectively.

Right. iPods were invented on December 25 2005 because that was the first time I used one.

And gravity wasn't invented until Newton's theories became widespread common knowledge. Until that happened, everyone used bubblegum (invented by Trog the Neanderthal who liked to chew on sweet tree sap) to stick themselves to the Earth.

The more I read, the more I just boggle.

you only laugh at me because you are too retarded to understand human beings. You must be Mr. Spock's wet dream with your littoralist understanding of everything. Now, welcome back to fucking reality where not everyone says precicely what they mean, but the ideas are there, and are perfectly legitimate.

Littoralist and precicely. Add "incompetent spelling" to "free use of vulgarity". Seriously, littoralist is a new one on me.

Some geeks in a lab with nothing better to do with their lives may diffrentiate between the two, but for all intents and purposes one is the other. When people say "I'm going to go get on the internet" they don't mean they're going to sit on a computer hub somewhere, they mean they are going to look through html documents with a web-browser. There may have, at one point, been a difference, but the point is moot now. The words have evolved away from their original meanings and become synonyms.

You know, when people say they have the flu when they really just have a cold, it's become so commonplace that frig it, all common colds are influenza now!

Geeks in a lab. My word, this gal takes the cake. And by cake I mean ice cream because they are often eaten together and are therefore interchangeable.

I am SO VERY, VERY TEMPTED to anonymously send her the entire article that I just wrote that details the FORTY-YEAR-LONG history of the Internet -- but she's already said that "the world wide web IS the Internet" so it's probably a lost cause.

At least she's not saying that AOL=the Internet. That's something, anyway.

Oh dear God. Fine, you want something not a wiki, try here and here and here and here and here.

So tell me, was the incandescent light bulb invented in 1879 by Thomas Edison, or in the 20th century when it came into popular use?

That's not the issue. The issue is whether it is mockable stupidity to say there were no bathrooms in 1900. The lightbulb may have existed, and in fact was invented in 1879. But I wouldn't fault anyone except a history (and maybe physics) teacher if they sited them as a difference between 2006 and 1906, since they weren't commonly used.

Does she not get her own fucking words. She changed the issue to the existence of the internet, that is what they were talking about just then. Maybe off-topic - but BWAH.

Wikipedia actually is a bastion of accuracy. Encyclopaedia Brittanica averages three-four errors per article. Wiki averages four-five, the articles are longer, and that average is constantly dropping.

I'd mock just because 'bathroom' is just ridiculously open ended. I can pretty much guarantee that the idea of setting aside a room devoted to the baser (yet oh so necessary) bodily functions is not an idea that came about in the 1900s. The Romans did it, for crying out loud. It was done before that in Knossos, and goodness only knows where else. Did this person specifically mean 'flush toilet'? Augh.
