Dell can suck it!
So, over on bad_service, pezchampion has a problem - his laptop crashed and woe! he does not have recovery disks. A couple people point out that you can make those, but not too wanky yet.

Oooh, but then, next post, wanksplosion! Poor pezchampion! He called those ignorant Indians in their call center and they couldn't help him! Alas! And then they dared charge him for a hard drive he didn't send back!
Some choice bits:
mechanos_angel: ... you suck. Seriously.

jelloink: Well I agree that Dell often has ass-backwards CSRs and tech who never know what the hell is going on, I also think you're a dick. So YOU suck it.

tenthredemption: "everyone's a little bit racist today..."

And on it goes, in that vein.

But wait! It gets better! pezchampion would like to remind everyone that the rules say OMG no personal attacks! Because apparently, personal attacks on hapless Indian callcenter employees don't count...

Karma will get you!

belindashort: Oddly enough, off-topic posts are also against the rules.

And on it goes.

Aww darnit! I was going to report this but i didn't see it til this morning.

I commented once in their original thread basically saying, 'i understand you were frustrated but you didn't need to be so rude'. But really, i always thought it was fairly intuitive that something isn't going to be replaced under warranty unless you can prove you owned the original in the first place.

Their second post just comes off as really smug and condescending to me, honestly i want to smack them.

a lot of you guys are funny getting mad at me for being mean to poor defenseless Dell.

do i have an attitude problem? probably. i'm an aspiring lawyer. so maybe it's a good thing that i'm harsh? maybe.

Oh good. He's studying to become his own internet lawyer.

regardless, lemme remind y'all that ad hominem attacks are against the community rules. check the user info page if y'all don't believe me. that's the point of me making this post.

That, and you can't stand not having the last word.

and although i really don't care if you all think i'm a horrible person, i'll let you guys know that i filed a report with the Better Business Bureau against Dell for a previous complaint, regarding them not sending me the recovery CD's, and instead sending me a little card saying "Your new computer does not require an operating system CD or driver CD's," only to have the computer crash within three months of getting it, and then them tell me that i do. so maybe after having to go through all that and then being billed when i shouldn't have made me explode. or perhaps it was their way of getting back at me (hey look, i'm cynical too!)

Fear my l337 complaining abilities! And my paranoia! Yeah, I'm sure Dell had a note on his account that said 'fuck this guy over any way you can'. It wasn't because, you know, Mr. future lawyer didn't read his warranty.

some of you may agree with me, some of you may disagree with me. regardless of what you all think, i got exactly what i wanted :)

And that's the kind of attitude that'll get him through life. Except not. What an arrogant ass.

With an attitude like that, he's going to need one.

I symphatize with the guy as far as not returning the thing, only because I had a very similar thing happen to me last week (my harddrive died), I called Dell to replace it, and they sent me a new part with no instructions about returning the old one, no box to send it back in, and no indication that that is anything I might have to do. If they now called me and said I had to send it back or they'd charge me $180, I'd be pretty annoyed.

Plus, I can think of several reasons they might NOT want the parts back - for one thing, it might cost more to ship the harddrives back to them, verify they're broken etc., than it would to just replace the damn thing, no questions asked and expect that a small portion of people will be defrauding them. They're a megahuge company and it's their job to make those analyses and communicate them to their customers, not the customer's job to figure out what they want.

That said, he sounds like an utter twerp and I'm in no way defending his behavior on the phone.

I hated having to return mine. I was still trying to figure out how to get the stuff off it, but HP wanted NOW. *sigh*

This guys an idiot.
Every single part I've had to replace with various Dell machines, they send the new one out overnight and include a waybill in the box so you are expected to USE THE SAME BOX THEY SHIPPED THE PART TO YOU IN to send the old part back.

That way, nobody can say there was no box. They tell you this 3 times in the call, and the paperwork in the box explaining it is bright orange for christs sakes.

I meant to add, but maybe Dell Canada are the only ones who follow this procedure for some unknown reason...

Hmm. . .I don't know if it's only Canada, but they didn't do that last time I got my hard drive replaced by them (last week). I'm in the U.S., and there was no mention of having to ship it back, no box, and no paperwork.

It must be then, because they did it to me and I was only replacing small things, like power cords and batteries.

A third experience... They did tell me to ship the part (CD drive) back in the same box, but only on one not-very-noticeable piece of paper. Most of the time I don't need to worry, because they send a technician over to install the part, and he takes the broken one with him.

Over the years, I've had two failed hard drives replaced (by the hard drive manufacturer though, not the computer company). Once they wanted the dead drive back (Western Digital, I believe) and once they didn't (Quantum?)

I liked the part where they argued whether or not pezchampion was a girl.

That was pretty funny.

I think he was being wanky, but not all people can make recovery disks. Like people without CD burners. D: I'm just glad I had the disks for when my hard drive conked out.

Just out of curiousity, how does one make a backup disk? Apparently my computer will only take floppies and gives me some shit about d:\ not being a valid path for backup.bkf.

Now, I could be wrong (...probably) but go to control panel, open add/remove hardware, hit the startup disk tab and then hit create disk. This is for making a recovery disk with a flobby, or at least that's what I use.

I'm on Windows 98 though, so it may be slightly different if you're on XP/Mac.

Actually, that's my problem. I'm on WinXP and the only way I can make a recovery disk is through a floppy, which can't hold all my information. When I try to use the d:\ drive to make a CD, it says the whole bs in my last comment. Aggh.

Hmm, it sounds like you don't have your CD drive set up as a bootable drive. If you know someone who gets BIOS, I'd have them change that; it'll cause a problem if you ever need to boot from disk, because mostly rescue disks and the like don't come on floppy anymore. (Because, well, they're too big.)

You know, I hadn't thought of that being the problem, so I'll try it out. I know how to configure BIOS, so there's no worry there. (I've never mentioned it, but I was working on a CNS degree at one point and computer repair's my strong suit.)

Try here and here. You have to pick and choose the files for XP to make a startup disk.

I know there's a fix for the backup.bkf issue too, something about NTBackup not being able to write directly to the CD/RW. Could that be your issue?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]annabelle_lee

The links didn't help, but I think it could either be a case of something else running the d:\ drive when I was trying to write to the disk or that it's not writing to the CD-RW. I'm not sure which it is.

Bah, I'm just going to shelve my backup for a bit and figure it out later. I'm lazy like that.

I checked my BIOS settings earlier and apparently my CDROM drive (d:\) is my first bootable drive, so it's not that.

For someone 'aspiring' to be a lawyer and not read all the fine print...well, he's off to a bangup start.

As for the Better Business Bureau reporting, I'd wager they probably laughed this one off. I had one lady say she was reporting my company for not guaranteeing the access numbers she was using were local despite the clear disclaimer that if you weren't sure to contact your phone company to double check.
