Picture morality
[man, I kept hoping one of y'all would report this so I wouldn't have to put down the alcohol and get off my lazy arse]

Meet Judith. Judith lost her camera while on vacation in Hawaii.

I lost my camera on my first-ever trip to Hawaii, along with 500+ pictures. Since Hawaii is pretty well documented on Flickr, I thought I'd create a trip journal with the pictures of strangers who had taken similar photographs. You won't get to see me swimming in a waterfall, though. Oh well.

I hadn't posted here in a while, because just after the last post, I got a call from an excited park ranger in Hawaii that "a nice Canadian couple reported that they found your camera!" She gave me their name and number, and I eagerly called to reclaim my camera.

It seems their 9YO has recently been diagnosed with diabetes and also became enamored of someone else's expensive camera.

...and he's now convinced he has bad luck, and finding the camera was good luck, and so we can't tell him that he has to give it up. Also we had to spend a lot of money to get a charger and a memory card."

It started to dawn on me that she had no intention of returning the camera.

Yup, they're going to let him keep it.

The real fun begins, where else? in the comments.

Posters' suggestions run from publishing all pertinent info to just the city said family reside in. Some helpful folks want to send the kid candybars to enable his diabetes. Others think the OP will lose any moral credibility if she posts contact info. Still others wonder why the OP is so upset, and maybe the kid and the family need the camera more than she does. Of course, some see holes in the time line of the story and call bullshit. Not just on there not even being a kid, but on the whole story, calling the OP an attention whore.

I'll just keep watching.

ETA: oh those internet lawyerz.

ETA: she's updated her blog, but turned off comments

So being diabetic means I get to steal stuff now?

Think of all the time I wasted trying to *earn* money.

If a diabetic kid tried to steal my camera, I'd say "Tough shit - I've got epilepsy," punch him in the face and take it back. It's MY camera. It was a gift from MY parents. And I'm very possessive, in direct proportion to the cost of my possessions (apart from the fish, which assume far more importance than their monetary cost).

This story made me scan my room to ascertain the position of my digital camera. It's on my fishtank, thank goodness.

Wait wait, had to delete and post a new comment as I had more to say.

I like how the well-being of their son is important to these parents, but not important enough to buy him his own camera. Yeah, they were probably ready to, looked at the price and said "Damn, let's just steal this one instead."

Also wow @ all those comments of people offering to replace her camera. o_O

I call scam, if only because of the story in those Great Brain books where the father of a diabetic kid stole their rocking horse. Of course, there the kid really was going to die very soon and the family really was desperately poor (i.e. not vacationing in Hawaii), so it was more or less morally acceptable, I figured. But this tracks it just a little too closely for me to readily believe the OP.

Wait. This makes no sense. If they found the camera in the park, wouldn't they just turn it in to Lost and Found? Why would they wait until they got back to Canada to call the park ranger?

If you're just going to steal the camera, why even tell the owner that you found it?

Assuming the OPs story is true, the Canadian couple are crappy parents. If they really wanted to show their kid what the right thing to do is, they'd send the camera back to it's owner and then buy him his own digital camera (maybe a less expensive one) for a birthday/whatever other present giving holiday they celebrate.

Yeah, I'm gonna call bullshit on this one too. This family can afford a trip to Hawaii but not a new camera? Also, this is a cut and dried case-- she even has the park ranger as a witness that the family found the camera, so siccing the law on them wouldn't be something you "look into", you just... do it. Either the OP is an attention whore or is angling for Free Internet Gifts.
It's sad that a lot of people read that blog and took it at 100% face value. NOTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET IS TRUE, PEOPLE.

I'd be a lot less skeptical if she could provide pictures of the same consistent set of people now that she has her photos on CD. Or if she could post pictures of the packaging that the CDs came in, maybe with the names and house numbers blurred out. Because the sort of person who plops down five hundred dollars for a camera does not have just the one. It's the sort of thing one works up to on the "This is nice, but that's better" principle. In my stable I have my film 35 mm point-and-shoot, my film SLR, and my 35 mm digital. I'm fairly sure I even still know where my 110 from the early 80s is. If I lost one of them, I would not be utterly pictureless until I found it again.

Except, I actually today sort of did lose my digital, in that I drove sixty miles to take pictures of something, and when I got there it turned out that I had spare batteries for the camera, but not a camera to put it in. I must make a blog to mourn the loss of my poor, semi-expensive camer--um, I mean the loss of the seventeen-hundred-dollar Nikon D200 which really is mine, I just let the photo shop hang on to it for me until I feel like visiting to hold it and pet it and tell it how much I love it.

Either way, internet "justice" seekers are scary, yo.
