OMG non-icon stealers are evil gay!!!1
Every now and then, [info]metaquotes gets an evangelist for whatever issue. Here's why Harmony rocks, here's why white people suck, 9/11 is funny, Hanson is gay, blah blah blah.

In this case, a troll boasts that icon stealing is okay and you're a complete retard if you disagree.

Naturally, people disagree.

EDIT: Much love to [info]luckdragonfujur for pointing out the meta poster's reaction to the wank:

And I forgot to say where I got the link to the feed: http://community.livejournal.com/stupid_free/37640.html

And I suck because of this:

****EDIT FOUR: In a startling act of one-sided journalism, the metaquote is picked up on OTF_WANK and I'm called both a troll and an evangelist for icon theft. I wrote a lengthy rebuttal, but accidentally deleted it and can't remember what I said. But my points were valid and I'm not a troll, dammit!!!

*****FINAL EDIT (I think): Okay, I re-wrote my rebuttal on the syndicated feed here. I was amazed by how worked up everyone got about icons, but I'm really irritated by the way my post was mis-represented.

It's really amusing how he chose to put his comment where it's very unlikely he'd get a response ._.

Dear, you don't suck; you're on your toes. Thanks for pointing this out cause I never would have seen it! :)

I'm so confused on this entire issue. I just started making icons (*points at icon*) and I really really wouldn't give a shit if people took them and didn't credit me or whatever.

But when it comes to icons of my art/photos of my dolls I'm divided. On one hand, sure whatever make an icon but a credit in the post distributing the icons would be nice in case someone likes my art and wants to see more. On the other hand I know someone recently took down all her public galleries in the BJD community and put them back up protected and with huge watermarks over the images. And I understand why, because people were taking her pictures and just slapping the words 'hot' or 'sexy' on them or giving them sparkly eyes or whathave you and clearly she was bothered by it.

In the end I guess I really wouldn't care unless someone was trying to sell my art.

So can you tell I'm totally trying to avoid doing work?

Yeah. That's true.

I'm pretty garbage with graphics, so I'd rather not have people take my icons, particularly since I make them just for me.

It bothers people differently. But if someone wants credit, I respect that. Personally? I'm only really going to get pissed if someone claims that they made my icon, even if I do ask to be credited.

Dude, the only reason I want credit is so that I can be all "AHAHAHA MY ICONS BITCHES." I want people to know I made the icon because I've got a giant flaring ego; it's perfectly natural to want acknowledgement for a work.

However, if they don't, that's also okay. My ego can take the hit. I think it's rude, but it's hardly criminal.

I don't understand why this issue keeps coming up. I suppose it's because you can't really come up with an answer that suits both sides.

Me, I'd prefer to be credited, and the three people who use my icons do credit me. At any rate, yeah, making icons is fairly easy and such, but it isn't easy enough that I don't want to be credited. (Maybe it's easier for other people, I'm still learning techniques and such in Photoshop.) I do considerable fiddling with text and size and borders and colors and blah blah blah, it isn't like I just crop an image and throw some text on in thirty second.

Oh, and so that way maybe someone else will see it and look at my other icons. And I'd like someone to someday say, "Principessa, wow, she makes some awesome icons". And then when I die and go to Hell (I am an evil ChocoHeron, after all) I can bring my skates.

I had someone make me a set of icons and a banner to illustrate my long fic- hand drawn, unique, and closely related to the story.

A kid on my home posting board came to my journal and copied the best of the bunch, then used it on the OT thread of that forum and was surprised when I took it badly. So: I suppose it's stupid to get wanky about icons, but sometimes it's difficult not to.

Credit weirds me out. When I post my stuff to comms, I make a point of saying I don't need it. People still feel compelled though, for some reason. And they tell me. Which is kinda nice, I mean people want to send it back to me. But I recognize my own work and glee when I see people using 'em.

...but I will say that for whatever reason, I'm a lot less likely to take a icon from someone making a big deal about wanting credit.

I'm the same way with credit. It's cool if people want to credit me, but I don't go out and ask for it. After all, I made them so people could use them.

And yeah, same here. It's just not worth the hassle, plus it kind of feels like I'm jumping through hoops just to satisfy someone's big ego. Ugh.

Well, as an icon-taker rather than an icon-maker, I like it when people credit icons, because if I see a particularly spiffy one, I can always go and check out more by the same person.

It's because of that reason that I like to ask for credit. I'm of the same two minds about it, though.

The only time credit gets to me is when somebody credits someone else for my icons. And that almost never happens except all those people who took my (crap, honestly) icon from Mugglenet that I didn't even tell Emerson he could use, anyway, and credited him and not me, dammit.

::cough:: Sorry. I had a moment.

It's not so much that icon stealing that bothers me, but the fact that, y'know, all people really want is just to be ASKED. It's a ten-second gesture of politeness. It's not hard. No one is asking you to do anything difficult. Sheesh.

To not give credit where it's due is rude as far as I'm concerned. As it is I've got scads of LJ icons I'd love to rotate around with but since I'm not sure who created them since I found them gradually over the years and just saved them to the computer because they cracked me up.

Honestly, I think both parties are lame, but I tend to side with the stealers.

Not giving credit when you're asked nicely is rude, yes. But it's even more rude to go on a fucking witch-hunt about it and call on your posse of internet thugs to harass the person. It's a 100x100 pixel crop of a base image that, in all likelihood, you didn't even make in the first place.

Some people won't give credit. They don't have to, either. Accept that, and get the fuck over it.

Caveat: if the base image was made from your original art, then you've got every right to be pissed the hell off. But freaking out because somebody ripped off your rip-off is just plain stupid.

Wow, that Lord Snot and his friends sure are witty and original, the way they keep deliberately misspelling words and pretending at being outraged by going ZOMG O NOES YOU ARE TEH ART THEEF, that really shows us how above-it-all they are, and not at all making a mountain out of a molehill. Yes, I'm very impressed. I bet they totally have lives and don't believe the internet is "serious business" at all, the more they post about this vitally important subject.

This is why I don't use any icons except ones I slap together. I don't need any more drama in my lj. Plus, I've found that by letting people snag my icons without demanding credit, far more people grab 'em, which ups my squee'age when I see 'em spreading like a bad virus across the web.

I don't care if I get credit or not, but that's because my iconing skills are limited to cropping, adding a border, and sometimes slapping on wacky text (the above being a typical example). The hardest part of this, really, is picking the font I want, so most of my icons take maybe five minutes to make and demanding credit because OMG I know how to use the crop tool seems silly to me. Besides, I only have one icon (at LJ) where I credit the photographer, and that only because she specifically shared the photo with me knowing I'd like it, so where do I get off whining about credit when I don't give it myself? I credit other makers if I know who they are, but that's the only requirement I have for myself. On the rare occasion someone does gank one of my icons, I'm so excited to see it that that is plenty of credit for me.
