Wank in... KNITTING?
Yes, folks, we have knitting wank.

Over on [info]knitting, [info]secretlifeof_em posts about how a Miss Manners clone says knitting in conferences is bad! and how cheesed off she is.

Many knitters agree that they are cheesed off. Many email the clone.

Some think that, while knitting is fun, it is rude to do it at a conference. Someone brings up ADD and multitasking (The whole thread has been littered with them). People get sarcastic.

Just remember kids, the internetz(and knitting) is SERIOUS BUSINESS.

Actually, not being able to stay on task is one of the signs of ADD. My son has ADD and we've been dealing with it for many, many years. For me, yes, I could knit and pay attention. Part of that reason is because I DON'T have ADD. I would never suggest to someone trying to deal with ADD that they add another diversion to their attention.

I am not going to wank. I am not going to wank. Suffice to say that I don't think she has any idea what the fuck she's talking about.

I can either sit quietly and knit or fidget so much I become a distraction to everyone else. And since the incident with the gameboy... yea, I figure knitting is a LOT quieter.

Not EVEN!

When I was a mere wee thing at Evergreen, I took up needlepoint to give me somewhere to put my hyperactivity instead of expressing it verbally and cheesing off my seminar leader and fellow students.

Teaching an ADHD kid to draw or juggle or do ANYTHING (but not click their ballpoint pen in syncopated rhythm) is a standard means of teaching him to focus.

Actually Miss My Son Has ADD, guess what? So do I. And I took 4 AP courses and study multiple languages and do everything that someone without ADD does without any problem. It's called focusing and putting your mind to something.

For me, I can talk to someone and study at the same time. It's called having the willpower to do that.

Make her shut up.

Wankers, the lot of 'em.

Still, if I couldn't doodle in classes that did not require exstensive note taking? I'd process a fraction of what I do if my hands are busy. Or go insane. I have friends who knit through class, and nobody's ever freaked out about it.

I draw porn, they make socks. Together, we don't fight crime!

Yeah, some of them get way wanky in the get-off-my-side-etc. way, but the people who get all indignant about people knitting or doing other stuff in class/conferences ... Dude, I've heard stories of people masturbating in class--as far as I'm concerned, knitting/doodling/whatever neither disgusts nor distracts the rest of the class, so it's on a far lower level of "rudeness" than a lot of other things people could be doing.

I don't see how knitting is any ruder than zoning out or doodling all over your papers, which is what I've always done when bored in a conference. I'm sure it probably does help people listen, being that it's a mindless, anti-fidgeting sort of activity.

However, I once had to go to a conference for work and the lady actually made us color while she spoke because she said we'd listen better. I can't remember a single word she said, as I was busy trying to make the cartoons' clothes all stylish.

Btw, if you're that surprised about knitting wank, you are totally missing out on God's magical pubic hair.

I went to two lectures yesterday and there were people knitting at both of them. It struck me as somewhat disconcerting. . .I mean, I know they were probably just doing it to help them focus, but whatever happened to the age-old device of doodling? You get to keep your hands busy, the lecturer assumes you're taking notes, everyone is happy.

Just because I can knit, do crossword puzzles, or make play solitare on my computer while someone else is talking doesn't mean it's not rude.

PREACH.

Also, if I were sitting next to a knitting person at a conference, the little clicky needle noises would drive me nuts.

In conclusion: YOU! Out of my disorder!

I'm a little flumoxed by the "rudeness" thing, but that's probably because seeing women (and men) knitting (crochetting, doing needlepoint, crosstitch, other embroidery) in lectures, classes, and professional meetings is something I've long taken for granted. The only place utterly off limits is Church.

I totally loved Hexannacht losing her shit over the person using "you" to describe people knitting in conferences:

Hey. You said, "you". Several times. You gave no indication that you were using "you" in a general sense. There was nothing else to indicate that you were speaking in a general sense. It is not unreasonable for me to perceive that your words were directed toward me, personally.

So, Hexannacht, you know she doesn't know you, and you understand the usage of "you" in a general sense. But you still decided to think she was describing you and your behavior personally, just because she didn't disclaim "general you" anywhere in her comment? Talk about begging to be insulted.

This is interesting that 'Miss Conduct' says it is rude, as I have a Miss Manners book where Judith Martin herself admits to knitting through all her classes at Wellesley (I think it was Wellesley) but that "she ended up with a sweater and an education that was markedly smaller than she had anticipated."

Well...that is a tough one. Because, for some people, I'm sure knitting can help, though I don't agree with the ADHD excuse. I've had it for years, yet I've managed well enough. I just tought myself focus and control - enough that I even got rid of the meds.

Just whipping it out in the middle of a conference, sans warning? Probably going to come off as rude. If you require something that noticeable to keep your attention focused, then you should probably have words with the speaker beforehand. I doodle like crazy on my notebooks, by my professors don't mind - because I ace the exams and prove that I *can* do the work. It's all about context, really.
