It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel meh.)
Ads. On LJ. You can only guess where this will go.

Oh, yes.

There will be wank.

Why mess with the perfect summary?

Ads eh?

I'm a paid user at the moment so I'm kinda undecided on this issue at the moment but worse comes to worse I have a domain and Wordpress to fall back on. :D

I'm kinda surprised that advertisers walked on Ghastly because of the Jesus-having-sex-with-his-wife porn thing. I mean, after Tentacoo Wape, the three-some with Cthulhu's parents, and Zipper Ninja, it's simple in-wedlock porn invovling Jesus that pisses people off?

Exactly. I paid for my permanent account in part to help people who can't afford a paid LJ account to have an enjoyable experience. I want to protect THOSE people, not the people who opt-in for ad viewing.

I wonder if she has a comic. Or better yet, a cartoon! Magnanimous Woman and the Selfless League of America!

I don't get their logic there. They want to protect the people who don't pay, and won't allow ads displayed to help with the site revenue, and condemn the ones who would allow ads displayed? Erm, I'd be siding with the ones willing to put up with ads to help out the site. I realize the people who allow ads will get some bonuses, but...

I can confidently state that almost all paid users probably feel the same way that I do about our hundred icons. Those icons are our precious, precious babies, our pride and joy. If the ad-enabled people get even close to the number of icons as a paid user, or the option to purchase additional icons without the initial paid account... there will be hell to pay.

Because honestly, who the hell wants phone posts?

Hey, I don't mind. They stomach the ads, they get a few treats.

Now give me more icon space, LJ! Damn you!

Phone posts could be fun if you didn't have to pay for the calls. I mean, I would have to call them from the UK. I love my journal, but not that much.

I love having 100 icons, I am still filling it up. Now I am debating whether or not to get a paid account here.

Those people who're going - "OMG u corporate whorez ur selloutz!!1!!" - need a fucking reality check. Bandwidth is not paid with magic pixie dust. It sucks, but that's life for you.

As for the people who have 'ethical' problems - uh, what's so unethical about ads? Ads are necessary to sell products, which in turn pay the wages of employees - i.e. everyone. Welcome to capitalism. If you don't like it, feel free to live in your closest communist country.

OMG MY VIRGIN EYES MIGHT SEE AN AD! I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN AD BEFORE AND YOU ARE OPPRESSING ME BY HAVING THEM ON THE SITE THAT I DON'T PAY FOR AND THUS FORCING ME TO VIEW ADVERTISING! WHICH I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY OF IN MY LIFE BECAUSE I DON'T WATCH TV OR LISTEN TO RADIO OR READ NEWSPAPERS OR MAGAZINES OR DRIVE DOWN THE HIGHWAYS WHERE I MIGHT SEE BILLBOARDS OR ACTUALLY GO ANYWHERE ELSE ONLINE -- THE ONLY THING I DO IN MY LIFE IS READ LJ BECAUSE IT'S AD-FREE AND NOW! NOW YOU ARE RUINING EVERYTHING AND FORCING YOUR DIRTY DIRTY ADS ON ME, YOU ADVERTISING PIGS!

Whatever. I have a paid account. If I ever give it up, I hope the advertising won't hurt me.

Uh-oh! Giving people more options? What's wrong with you! You're supposed to force people to comply with your business model, not let them decide things. It's almost like you give a shit about your users or something.

[info]idonotlikepeas wins.

That aside, I'll gladly enable ads on my journal if it means i can have a few more icons. Poor Brad - he's obviously not entirely comfortable with putting ads on the site but he's kind of in a rock and a hard place. I'm certainly not going to bitch and moan over it. I mean, would they rather the site closed down? Reminds me of all the whining people did on Neopets when they put up ads. Does nobody get how much bandwidth costs to support that many users?

Not that I really care about ads all THAT much, but I'd rather they just cut back the free features if they want to make more money (and half the paid ones -- I use what, 3 phone posts a year at most?). I don't mind paying for my paid account, but if it becomes paying just to supress ads, that's totally lame.

Is it horrible that I'm actually hoping this drives people away from Livejournal and to Greatestjournal. I'd rather have my main journal hosted there, with all those lovely free icons, but my friends are all on LJ.

I have a free account I'm totally happy with. Hell, I was happier with three icons cos it meant I could just do 'happy', 'sad', 'angry', and be done with it. Wtf do I do with six? 'Confused'? 'Amused'? Aaargh!

This sounds like a good idea. It seems fair, especially after they put in that new feature that auto-saves your entries in case of a crash. I would sacrifice caribou to the staff cos of that new feature. ^_^
