Wait, are coat hangers found in nature? Problem solved.

Herbal Abortion
Hey ladies, I was wondering if any of you have any good links about herbal abortion and how to conduct one? (Doses, plants, preparedness, etc.)It sounds really interesting to me, and a helluva lot safer than the alternatives. (I'd be so afraid of abortions harming my body!) Any links to holistic approaches? Thanks!

The screened stuff was all some girl saying "OMG you murderer, karma is going to bite you on the ass if you murder your child!" etc etc etc.

I expected as much. Just wanted to see the play-by-play, though.

Will not wank about "alternative medicine." Will not. Will not.

Yeah, I'm way more scared of semi-surgical medical procedures than ingesting poison. Poison's natural!

I'm a firm supporter of herbal medicine and have had training in it as part of my midwifery schooling, and I would NOT suggest that anyone try an herbal abortion. Anything toxic enough to make you abort is toxic enough to kill you. People have died from ingesting pennyroyal oil to induce abortion - 'nuff said.

Lady, go to Planned Parenthood while you still can and stop thinking that "natural" = "safe." A tree falling on your head is "natural," too.

Something as extreme as an abortion should be taken care of by a professional, not the interweb or an herbal clotheshanger.

But of course the people speaking about using pennyroyal oil are the ones who were lucky or know someone who was lucky.

Most of the one's I saw actually told her flat out, this stuff has been known to work - but it's also deadly.

Still - Planned Parenthood has people who know what they're doing there to do this, and they've got methods that work a hell of alot better than anything lj can cook up, "natural" or not.

I loved the bit about how if you massaged a pregnant woman's ankles it can cause a miscarriage. Okay!

Parsley is actually an emmenogogue (helps your period start), and there's a pressure point in your ankles that can stimulate contractions. I don't think either will cause you to abort, though.

This chick is an idiot. However, it's also true that women may have to resort to that soon. I'm not holding out a lot of hope that the Roberts court is going to uphold Roe.

Hopefully there will be enough *safe* and *not batshit insane* underground abortion providers to at least help a lot of women. Some of them did have good training and procedures in the past.

Also, taxi service to Canada w00t.

I'm actually freaking out some about this, for selfish reasons, because I'm on meds that are apparently very, very good for me but would do horrendous things (to me but esp. to fetus) were I to get pregnant. This is also why I'm on assloads of bc, and in fact had to be before I could get the prescrip. If it fails? Yeah. Great.

Wow, would you mind talking to me in e-mails or something about midwifery (if you're in America)? I'm fascinated by the field and have been uncertain about whether or not I should try for it.

Ten internet dollars says that the OP thinks that downing pennyroyal oil cocktails will be safer than going to a doctor because she's convinced that Bush's AMERIKKKA has sabotaged (or boobytrapped) abortion clinics everywhere.

Ahahahahahahahah, someone with a fetish for self-injury is saying they're afraid of abortions harming their body. I dunno whether the OP is trolling, trying to be ironic, or just that much of a dumbfuck. I'm guessing all of the above for $500, Alex.

They also used herbs to fight disease. Call me crazy, but I'll take my chances with antibiotics, thanks.

Well, it depends on the disease. I use cranberry tablets and drink like crazy to treat UTIs, and it works fine. Less expensive than Macrobid, and it doesn't cost me a doctor's visit (especially now that my insurance is dried up).

But abortion? That's insane. If it's deadly enough to kill a fetus, it's plenty deadly enough to kill you, too.

Word. Garlic and yogurt are great for yeast infections. Penicillin is great for ear infections. Don't try to stick herbs in your ear, they'll only improve the smell a bit as you go deaf. People who think you can do anything with herbs drive me insane--if herbs are so great, why did people in the past routinely die young?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

rachelthedemon
2006-03-13 01:47 am UTC (link)
Exactly. Herbs are good for some things. I treat cystitis with cranberry, but if it's a kidney infection? I don't care how much it is, gimme my antibiotics.

The trick is knowing what you can treat with homeopathy, and what you can't.

Seriously!? I'll keep note of that the next time I get a UTI.

rachelthedemon

Yeah. The trick is to take 800mg of cranberry every 8 hours, and drink enough to where you're peeing a lot once an hour.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]heddychaa
2006-03-13 09:36 pm UTC (link)
I'll have to try that. I get UTI's every three days, it feels like. And peeing in a cup that often is not my idea of fun.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

rachelthedemon
2006-03-13 09:56 pm UTC (link)
No kidding. Not to mention that for women with frequent UTIs, antibiotics can lose their effectiveness if they're depended upon too much. Cranberry works by preventing bacteria from adhering your bladder lining so you can flush the infection out with plenty of water (the last time, I drank on average about 2-3 gallons a day for 3 days). The same properties can be found in blueberries, but cranberry is preferred because it has a lot less sugar, which is handy bacteria food.

You can also use unsweetened cranberry juice in the highest concentration possible if you like, but I prefer the caplets because the juice, even sweetened, tends to make me nauseous if I drink too much.

Important advice, though: if symptoms don't improve within 36 hours of the home remedy, get thee to a doctor. As much as I like home remedies for simple things, I'm not for being stupid and not seeking medical attention when they don't work. And urinary infections are not to be taken lightly.

And urinary infections are not to be taken lightly.

I hear that. We scrambled to find a doctor on Boxing Day because I had blood in my urine. BLOOD VERY BAD.
