Baby, thinking of tar dripping down the back of your throat and filling your lungs gets me so hot...
Seattle, Washington is having a little trouble with their Smoking Ban. Goddamn Government! First I can't shoot pinkos, now smoking is slightly more difficult! What is this country coming to?

When Sufjan Stevens gets around to doing his album on Washington, he should mention something about [info]jameth. It's only fair, really.

The ban is statewide, voted in by a wide magrin of the voters, and the letters to the editor situation has gotten dire. Today's Olympian includes a suggestion that the NEXT step will be weighing people at the door of restaurants so that fat people would not be able to enter and eat.

Thus the reductio ad absurdum gets all the more absurd.

I'm in Seattle and the worst part about the ban is that I like to smoke while I drink, not buy a drink, have a sip, then go outside and walk 25 (20? I forget exactly) feet away from all entrances along the street so I can have a smoke in the rain before walking all the way back for another sip.

So I'll just smoke and drink at home. Yay! It's a lot less expensive, at least.

Bars in Canada just have ventilated smoking only sections where employees are not required to serve people.

I'm an asthmatic, I fucking hate smoke, but that solution works well enough for me. It also allows me to avoid the toxic cloud upon entering or exiting a building. (walking through doors should not have to be that big of a trial, my friends.)

The smoking ban came in here in Ireland in early 2004, and you know what? It's been fantastic. It's wonderful to not have to deal with choking on other people's smoke and my eyes watering and my contacts falling out whenever I enter a pub or restaurant anymore. Also, so many people have given up smoking because of it, which is a good thing.

I'm not against people smoking if they want to, just as long as they do it in their own space. The countless "But we'll have to go OUTSIDE!" excuses get on my nerves. What's worse, getting a cold or developing cancer? It's your choice if you want to pollute yourself, buddy, but I'd prefer it if I didn't have to share your smoke whenever I step into a social venue. Most places have outdoor smoking areas now anyway, so you're catered for.

If it can work here, it can fucking work everywhere else.

I'm in Seattle, and I smoke. Sometimes? Kinda. When it's been a bad day.

But thats besides the point. I'm half for this, half against this, mostly just going "what the fuck ever" and going on with life.

At college, we've always had to leave the building before smoking, but now we have to go 25 away from the nearest door. Except we don't. And people don't care.

Nor do they care at the pub I go to, nor at work. We just go outside and everyone happy and OHWELL. So it's not really the end of the world.

Its the people on both sides who get all "Well, it's my RIGHT" that piss me off. Yes, it's my right to smoke, and yes, it's my right to go to a pub with out smoke. But it's NOT YPOUR RIGHT TO KILL MY HEARING, KTHXBAI.

Plus, Seattle people? Get used to it. It's staying.

Okay...yeah. I suppose I agree with smoking bans in places like restaurants and places like that but a bar (is it against the law to smoke in bars in Seattle?)? I thought it was common knowledge that bars are for drinking, smoking, and random sexual encounters. MY BAD.

I generally can't stand smoking bans, but as soon as I hear "nanny state", I consider the person uttering it nothing more than a squealiing baby who's a laughing stock.

Oooh, it's a smoking debate, yay! Alright, boys and girls, here's a little story, since we're all sharing:

Once upon a time, I grew up in a smoking household. In fact, the smoking was so bad, our ceilings turned yellow and there was much coughing and lung infections, especially in the winter. Despite this, nobody died or got cancer.

However, I became one of those sanctimonious non-smoking whiners who nagged that people should quit smoking forever OMG. As I grew up, I realized that maybe people resented this because I was pushing my agenda on them, and not because they were big meanie-heads out to get me or they were too stupid to realize that they were slowly killing themselves. I also realized that if I didn't like it, I didn't have to sit and bitch. I could keep away from the smokers instead and choose not to smoke.

And yet, the smokers still smoked. They smoked everywhere I was; clogging restaurants, bars, and streets with clouds of tar and tobacco. I dodged them and they followed. There was no end in sight, until...

Rocks fell and no one had to worry about cancer ever again because they all died. THE END. (Plz R&R YAYZ!!!!1)
