Pro choice, its not just about abortion anymore.

Much thanks a mousie friend for this one. Over on the LJ community, [info]booju_mooju,  </span>[info]tekra wants to know something about the possibility of formula becoming prescription only and those that support it.

"With that mindset, are you anti-abortion?"

And wank ensues.

http://community.livejournal.com/booju_mooju/334745.html

And ensues again.

http://community.livejournal.com/booju_mooju/334926.html

And again.

Seriously. Putting aside the main wankery (What the hell does breastfeeding have to do with abortion?), there are people who are saying you should get a prescription to buy formula? My baby sister takes formula because my mother can't make enough breastmilk for her, and it's about as workable as saying we should get a prescription to purchase groceries.

Ditto. I am not understanding this "formula = POISON!!!" stance. It's not like you can look at a crowd of adults and tell which ones were formula-fed by their withered limbs and vacant expressions. *eyeroll*

Don't you know? There were no mentally or physically challenged people before the advent of formula, just as there were no austistic people before childhood vaccinations. Clearly, if you can't sustain your child on your own two ta-tas, there's obviously a malfunction with it or yourself, and if you can't afford to get a permission slip prescription slip from a doctor, that's absolute proof you and your issue should be removed from the genepool. Peons.

I sent links to this whole thing to my newly pregnant friend as part of my crusade to keep her away from parenting communities on livejournal. Pregnancy/motherhood is scary enough without a bunch of asshats invalidating everything you do because you aren't conforming to their narrow view of what being a good mother is.

I'm still boggling over the fact that if a woman isn't going to breastfeed they should just go have an abortion now. It's good to know that children would be better off aborted or starving to death than being fed formula.

You really have to be careful around parenting communities because there's many a batshit crazy lurking there. Because I knew in advance my son was going to be a c-section since I was too small to pass him naturally I was given the grief for not demanding to have him vaginally. Really, who's word am I going to follow, some person on the internet or my ob/gyn who's been in practice for more years than I've been alive?

And when I had my daughter, she too was supposed to be a c-section but with the commotion on that one and how fast she was coming there was no time to get me into the OR and I nearly bled to death when they pulled her out with the glorified shopvac.

The amount of people telling me how beautiful or wondrous it was that I had a 'natural' birth after a c-section had me right on that cusp of spontaneious decking them out.

The same applies for breastfeeding. The infant can't always latch onto the nipple for whatever reason or the mother just can't produce enough milk for the baby. Both my kids just couldn't latch on to my nips so I pumped to the point I could hear a mental moo each time I fired the thing up. And eventually I had to switch to formula because I just wasn't producing enough despite heavy pumping since I wasn't working at the time.

My two are 8 and 7 years old now and more healthy than I was at that age.

It's not just LJ. From my sister's experience, it seems like some hospitals are really hard-lining the push for breastfeeding, and making you feel like shit if you bring up the formula idea.

Which scares me, because I really, really do not want to breastfeed any young'ns I happen to pop out.

I was fed on formula. My brother and sister were fed on formula. We were all very healthy.

My mom's entire family (five kids) was breast-fed. Three had cancer, one of which died of it, and a fourth is diabetic.

Formula will not guarantee you a sickly child any more than breast milk will guarantee you a healthy one. Honestly...As long as the kid is getting proper nutrition, who cares where it's coming from?

Ah, this reminds me of the old days when i was pregnant with my first child and used to hang out on parenting comms. God am i glad i ran away from those places. Breast/bottle is the touchiest parenting debate around besides circumcision. Dear God - just the memory of the circumcision boards makes me want to get into the fetal position.

And what she's saying isn't completely true anyway. Even mothers with HIV can take measures to reduce the risk, such as medication or even simply heating EBM, and it's estimated that it's a less than 3% chance of transmission through breastfeeding, anyway.

Yes, a 3% chance of becoming HIV+ is NOTHING compared to the 100% fatality rate of formula.

... oh, WAIT.
