Also? I'm not sure how to explain it, but - somehow, his whole attitude of "I called and they're stupid" sounds to me not like he was calling in desperation looking for help but rather expecting some volunteer on the other end of a phone line to have the answers to Life, The Universe and Everything (42!).

Whereas I think 90% of the people who call just want a calm, caring voice to listen to their pain and hopefully keep them from drowning.

Well...when an oh-so-helpful family member forces you to call a suicide help line because you were crying for an hour, because you were seriously upset about some shit and were not, in fact, remotely suicidal, and you have to listen to some patronizing twit tell you over and over that of course you must be thinking of killing yourself, no matter what you say, and maybe you should be hospitalized, it's not the most helpful thing.
I'm sure they're a lot more helpful when actually used for what they're meant for.

Honestly, I haven't had the best experience with my local helpline, but I don't base my opinion of it on one, loserly experience (well, I did back then, but that's because I was blubbering, hysterical and... wacky). What works for one person, doesn't always work for the other; not to mention when you call you're always going to get a different counselor- some may be less effective than others.
