UC Davis: Prestigious University of WANK! And overreacting.
Over on the UC Davis LJ community, user [info]moditup posts a query about a Korean rap video or something broadcast at a local bubble tea place (the staff plays music videos from various Asian countries on large TV screens at this establishment).

Things go normally until [info]dry_speakers jumps in with a bit of an overreaction about his Asian heritage, and how [info]moditup is being an insensitive brute by "mocking Asians."

Nutty catfight ensues, with [info]dry_speakers making several tl;dr comments and randomly cussing at everyone he believes is insulting him or his ethnicity. Wheeeeee!

ETA: And here we have the apology post, wherein dry_speakers backtracks and says he was being a complete ass because his dog died. I would think that, like Assburgers, your dog dying (though unfortunate) is not the best excuse for being an asshole and getting angry about a Livejournal post.

Did you know that IT isn't allowed to call our software CD "Bovine Online" anymore? Apparently that's not the image UCD wants to protect. They might as well just give up on that one. Dickinson's administration tried that a while back, because the students basically settled on Red Devils for the mascot, but the president at the time was a Methodist minister and thought that was Not of God or something. He wanted the Colonials, but the students rightly pointed out that George Washington (who we played) already claimed that. So we remained the Red Devils.

Way back when, Stanford's sports teams were the Stanford Indians. In the '70's, people realized that this just might be offensive. The Daily ran a student poll to choose the new name. The winner?

The Stanford Robber Barons.

(This is only funny if you know that Leland Stanford, former governor of California, was a late 19th-century railroad magnate.)

Sadly, the Board of Trustees was Not Amused--given that the students hold the annual campus-wide Halloween party at the mausoleum where the founders and their son are buried, I don't know why they expected reverence--and they decided that the school teams would henceforth be known as the Cardinal. Not the bird; the color. Our mascot is a pine tree (palo alto). The most recent Tree got banned from games because she showed up at a basketball game vs. Cal with a blood alcohol level of .157.

He got hit by a big truck and when I realized that he wasn't in his dog house, I found out by going outside and seeing his carcass on the street.

If (and that's a big 'if') dry_speakers' dog did die it's his own damn fault for allowing it outside, unsupervised in a fence free yard. My gut however tells me there is no dog from the way he's acting. Granted, people handle grief differently and it's hard reading emotions online sometimes but if you go back two months when my own dog died you can tell I was in shock and didn't want to speak with anyone let alone get in a fight with someone.
