I knew a guy in high school who was the only hearing person in a family of deaf people. His parents had been on welfare when he was a kid, and they still had financial issues. And yet, somehow, despite his horrible lazy-ass welfare suck* parents, he still managed to get into Wesleyan.

In short, this bitch can STFU.

One of the persons in my group of friends is blind, and some is his twin brother. Both of them are now pretty successful lawyers, who work well with seeing persons; my friend is also happily married and now has a normal baby girl.

So, yeah, the girl should STFU.

Unless you're prelingually deaf, then I guess you should just keep your hands in your lap. Wow, that was a stunningly bad choice of words.

First of all, the train operator repeatedly sounded the horn as the train, which she had her back to, was approaching her and she didn't hear it, which is very understandable, but come on, what decent human being didn't feel three million tons of metal coming their way?!

Getting hit by trains is immoral, apparently. Dude, people who can HEAR get hit by trains all the time! And unless you're lying on the tracks I doubt you can really feel the train coming unless you're concentrating. I know I don't feel them coming until they start blasting the horn. And what is this chick trying to imply, that deaf people expect trains to stop for them? Seriously?

As a deaf person, this attitude is actually not all that uncommon in the deaf community. One of my best friends (who is deaf) was the same way - she hated other deaf ppl like whoa and had some serious issues going on.

She would pretend she wasn't deaf (tho that was really hard for her, her hearing is worse than mine) at times and refused to associate herself with most other deaf ppl. Not quite sure why I was the exception, altho it prolly had something to do with the fact that I still retained some small bit of hearing (at that time)...

I myself don't care either way. I know deaf ppl here who are cool, and those who aren't. You get gits in any community you 'belong' to, and deaf ppl are no exception.

As for not feeling a train coming thru, with all the residual 'noise' coming at a person just from walking around, it's not always gonna be able to be felt, especially if you're really not paying attention. Other factors like speed of the train and such come into it as well.

I can't help snorting every time she uses a phrase like "I'm so sick of hearing it".

Also, is she actually deaf or just hard-of-hearing? She sounds like a person who had to buy a hearing aid, like OH NOEZ, (psh, I know a bunch of people who have one at a young age) and thinks she has the right to judge people who were born deaf etc because of that.
