Oklahoma city threatens to call FBI over 'renegade' Linux maker
This is hysterical, literally. Don't miss the Wiki link to CentOS' page showing the e-mails in full. Johnny Hughes has the patience of a saint. (Originally seen at wibbble's LJ.)

What an idiot.

That is a thing of beauty. Thank you.

You're welcome! It kills me that the city hasn't figured out how to contact their service provider to fix the site. Hughes all but gave them the phone number, yet it's still showing a test page. Alert the federal authorities, omg! *dies*

I saw that. I was taking a break from work and your post met my eyes. Best. Thing. Ever. Better than a full body massage. (Well, almost.)

For sure the best thing since this convo with a customer after weeks of trying to convince them that emailing documents is faster and more efficient than faxing:

"Did you get the email?"
"Yes, and the document's there. But there's a problem. Can you send it again, but make it bigger this time?"
"Bigger?"
"Yes, the little page is really tiny. I can't read the words."
(realizes the customer is looking at the page icon that indicates there is a e-mail attachment) "Have you tried double-clicking on the little page?"
(pause)
"Oh, that's great! It got bigger!"

DUDE. "I am please to serve the citizens of the City of Tuttle"???????

Apparently he has 22 alleged years of IT experience and an MBA but that pesky grammar just eluded him . . .

*refrains from make hick/redneck Okie jokes*

I love Oklahoma, really. But some of the people in it are just . . .

Hee, I know. Did you see the comment from rcstilgar at CentOS' page? (It's the last one as of now.) Apparently he's formerly a defense contract widget, which sort of explains his mindset. Ah, guvmint.

I'm not sure that he intended to please them by becoming the unofficial City Jester... But whatever works!

At first, I saw the title as "Oklahoma City" (capitalized) and was thinking, "oh, great, what new idiocy has somebody in my hometown pulled this time?", then I realized it was "city" (lowercased) and was kind of relieved. Going "damn" anyway, though, because it's still an Oklahoman.

Yeah, but it's out in the part of the state where every town sign seems to list which MLB player was born there.

He certainly knows how to use multiple punctuation marks! Really, the man must be in his 40s or 50s and to use punctuation marks like that... really.

And the testsite! My god! It's so OBVIOUS!

I am computer literate! I have 22 years in computer systems engineering and operation.

I am sorry that we had to go through the process and accusations to get the problem resolved. It could have been resolved a lot quicker if the initial correspondence with you provided the helpful information that was transmitted in the last messages.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

The problem has been resolved by VIDIA who used to host the City website.
They still provide cable service but do not host the website. The
explanation was that they had a crash and during the rebuild they
reinstalled the software that affected our website.

So. If VIDIA used to host the City website, but now only provide cable service and no longer host the website, who exactly IS hosting the website?

Not paying your bills to VIDIA for the hosting might explain why the page is now blanked. Heh.

Well, they do have the http://www.tuttle-ok.gov/ page working. VIDIA is the service provider for the http://www.cityoftuttle.org/ address, but the tuttle-ok.gov service provider is Qwest. For some reason e-mail is set up through cityoftuttle.org - I don't know why. Maybe it's a holdover from when VIDIA hosted the site in the past or maybe Tuttle is in the same boat as the feds when it comes to affording .gov e-mail addies. There's probably not supposed to be a web page at cityoftuttle.org, but you'd think there would be a redirect at least. Now, why the city of Tuttle would have two domains going at once with two different service providers, and why VIDIA's software reinstall would affect a domain hosted by Qwest is beyond me. Being able to look up an IP number is about the extent of my knowledge about domains & such.

Whether it makes sense to you or me or anyone else wouldn't matter as long as it made sense to *trumpet fanfare* Jerry Taylor, City Manager with 22 years in computer systems engineering and operation! Apparently not, though. It's still cracking me up...
