Apparently there's been some controversy about China offering Taiwan a pair of giant pandas, and [info]rageprufrock posts a link to that article in her LJ. The response is generally one of amusement, until [info]harumi adds her two cents:

Well, I'm Taiwanese, and I don't appreciate the subtle hint at China/Taiwan unity. Historically we meant shit to China, so I don't see why they suddenly insist on being our bestest pals after our GDP rose up higher than theirs...oh, wait, maybe that's why.

Funny news article, but I have to wonder at reporter neutrality when clearly the author isn't. I don't care for the Chinese government, and have no wish to become part of their country, or have anything to do with their communist policies.

Pandas are cute, but if they're going to name them with names like Tuan Yuan, I can't help but be a little wary.

Of course, best course as far as I'm concerned, is simply to take the gift, and then rename them.

The ensuing sub-thread is then frozen, although [info]harumi responds as an anon near the bottom.

It's not huge, but the passive aggressiveness on both sides makes up for it.

China really isn't communist anymore, they just do free-market very badly.

What does Tuan Yuan mean?

Tuan yuan (phonetic) means "reunion". Not very subtle.

I've had friends arguing about the Taiwan-China cross-traits issue dozens of times before, and it's... messy. On a good day with a bamboo forest of luck, it only involves words.

Okay, here is what I don't get.

rageprufrock says My entire life I've never heard anybody say anything so ignorant and cruel to both the Chinese and Japanese than the "I'd rather be Japanese than Chinese" that you threw out today. and...well, I guess I see where she's coming from, but seriously, when you have this statement?

I know my mother would rather I bring a black man home than a Chinese man

How is THAT not the offensive statement you go after?

What I really don't get about that is that harumi was referring to the government, I think, as she said "Japanese citizen" and "Chinese citizen". WTF, rageprufrock?

My guess would be that because so many middle-aged Chinese/Taiwanese/whathaveyou parents have that precise horrible attitude towards African-Americans that it's not even surprising anymore.

Awful, but that's the prejudice that exists.

Aren't pandas a horrible investment, anyway? They cost so much to keep so once excitement dies down zoos lose a lot of money. Though if China isn't making Taiwan pay the lease, then ... maybe it's not so bad.

Well don't you know that everyone who lives in a country automatically agrees with their government and thus can be freely hated?

(though I suspect my mom would also prefer I bring a black man home rather than a Chinese man. The black man could probably help us get things off high shelves we can't reach!)

(yes I know I too am unfairly generalizing.)

Everybody's overreacting this time. It's a gift. Maybe not a wanted or needed gift, but still. Taiwan should smile, say thank you, and accept it like any well-mannered country would. It doesn't automatically mean that China is OMG TAKING OVAR because its' gift was accepted. Eesh.

Wait, earth logic. My bad.

Unity is so passé. It's all about nationalistic tension these days, baby.

Also, if we simply must define our current alliances by events in history, why does the collective American public seem to hate France?

Also, Britain? I'm sorry, but there's just too much in our history that we can't ignore. I don't appreciate the subtle American/English unity thing that's going on here. Historically, we were your bratty teenage colonies who wouldn't shut the fuck up about that 'independence' shit. Then we became bestest buddies when we become more industrially powerful that you? I don't think so.

I know my mother would rather I bring a black man home than a Chinese man.

'But she'd really rather I dated neither. Ewwwww!'

Bitch, you are clearly under the misconception that any sensible two-legged male is going to put up with your bullshit.

"The pandas are a trick, just like the Trojan horse," said lawmaker Huang Shi-cho of the Taiwan Solidarity Union party. "Pandas are cute, but they are meant to destroy Taiwan's psychological defenses."

Barring the seriousness of this situation, I think this article is a goldmine of hilarity.
