You catch more flies with battery acid. Right?
On LJ's most constructive pet community [info]stupidpetowners, [info]nimrodjess takes an iffy advice post from [info]ratsnospos and chucks the oversimplified version into the arena. Why? Because [info]jebuell DARED talk back to the rat rescuer extraordinaire. (Clearly she should've dumped the rats. It would've made their wanking so much simpler.)

Of course, there's always that naughty voice of dissent.

And it just wouldn't be complete without a little personal axe-grinding.

P.S. Hamsters don't live that long, and you don't know how old it was. Try again.

EDIT BANNINATION! And she's going to add another comment just to tell ya how much she doesn't care.

Christ. My cousins have a pair of barn cats that live outside year round in Wisconsin. Freezing cold winters, hot and humid summers, and the cats are allowed to roam anywhere they want. Those rats are taken care of better than they are.

These people need a bit of perspective.

Rats get cancer if you so much as look at them, though, remember, so probably spending time at a temperature below 75 degrees F would cause them all to explode in a shower of innards. Or something.

Oh god, DON'T bring barn cats into the issue. When I was in SPO, there were about three of us that were even slightly sane on that issue; no one else had a flipping clue what they were talking about, but barn cats=cruelty.

I'll never understand the positive aspects of rat owning. They're rats. Irritative, disease-ridden rats. They just sound like good pets.

[info]chibikaijuu
2006-03-27 12:03 am UTC (link)
Um, they're not exactly any more disease-ridden than any other animal. Yeah, in the wild, they scavenge, and are good disease vectors, but pet rats (which aren't even the same species as any of th wild rats in North America) don't carry anything your dog or cat wouldn't. In fact, since they probably don't go outside, they'd carry *less*.

Well, people carry diseases I'm a lot more likely to get, and frankly, my rats have better personalities and are easier to feed than most humans.

Well, people are also irritative and disease-ridden as well, but we keep them around and invite them over for drinks all the time.

And I think most of the rats people keep as pets are not scooped up au natural from the NYC sewers.

Wow, I never knew a rodent that has survived hundreds of years in sewers and cities would need so much care and compassion. NYC must have the fewest amount of rats in the world because it gets fraking cold there in winter and the plague in Europe must have been a scam because the rats couldn't survive there and... wait...

[info]chibikaijuu

These *are* domesticated rats, and so they probably aren't as hardy, but I was thinking the same thing. Rodents in general aren't particularly delicate, as far as outside influences are concerned.

Having read more-

I have to give [info]jebuell some kudos. Whether she is right or not and even if there is a axe grinding going on it still takes some guts to come down on the dissenting side of a debate with someone who is well-worshiped in a community. I personally think [info]jebuell has some good points and started out just trying to see both sides of the issue. Heaven forbid a person agree with points on both sides!

That would be like someone posting in THIS comm about breeding their unregistered, not-health-checked pitts with aggression issues for MONEY!

Leaving rats outside perhaps not protected enough=breeding dangerous animals against government regulations?
