Not quite supersized wank
this is pretty small, but should get a good laugh.

Over on ONTD, an entry from Morgan Spurlock's blog is posted here. He talks about censorship and apologizes for calling himself retarded, etc.

The important bit is:
Lastly, in the article it quoted me as saying that the greatest lesson those kids learned was the importance of freedom of speech. When saying that, I did not mean that you have the right to insult anyone at will (as many people have interpreted it.) I was referring to the fact that the group that hired me to speak asked that I not mention McDonald’s in any of my talk because one of their board members owns a franchise. That would be like asking Neil Armstrong to speak but tell him he can’t bring up walking on the moon, so needless to say, I didn’t agree to their censorship.

[info]blizzardbebe calls bullshit on eating fries = going into space. [info]andsheburns is a fangirl of Morgan Spurlock disagrees. The result is a thread of gold.

[info]pillcake paraphrases the letter pretty well.

[info]la_sikka points out that Super-Size Me is about more than just McDonalds. [info]blizzardbebe has seen it and disagrees

*sits on hands to refrain from wanking there*

Going into space was so important! They developed microprocessors, things like POCKET CALCULATORS OMG, mostly because of the goal of space exploration! Without that goal, that stuff might not have come around for way longer. Now, the moon landing may or may not have been true/real/important/whatev, but space exploration and the goal of space exploration have made lots of positive contributions to our society.

Not that any of those bints over there would know that.

Grah.

*slaps bad wanky hands*

Am I the only one who finds "retarded kids in the back wearing helmets" a touch offensive? And by touch I mean I'd yell at him for it?

I'd probably find it offensive if I believed for even half a second that he'd actually said that, yeah.

I'm confused -- I honestly can't tell if it's a real apology in response to a real event or not. Did he say it? And if he did, the clearly toungue-in-cheek (I hope!) apology is wank-worthy -- and if he didn't, why did the (registration required, boo) article say he did?

*thought I was smart, but is so confused*

Okay, so now this wank compelled me to actually check news reports, and the only thing in them that Spurlock denies is calling anyone other than himself "retarded". I thought it had to be a joking apology as the things he apologises for get more and more outrageous and I thought he was making shit up, but all the news reports *corroborate* that shit.

I think, on behalf of my sister who needs to wear a helmet, that Spurlock has now entered my "Wankers" list.

Also: First and most importantly, it should be made clear that the only person I called “retarded” was myself when I was unable to hear a question from the audience. Having done work with special needs children in the past, something this hurtful would never come from my lips.

WTF?!? You worked with special ed kids, and you call yourself retarded? And that's not hurtful?

"Dude, I can't believe I fucked up so bad, I felt so totally gay! --no, wait, why are you mad? I was talking about myself!"

*cleans off monitor*

Am i the only one who was already annoyed by him? I watched one episode of '30 Days' and wanted to reach through the TV and punch him and his whiny ass girlfriend. He just seems to me like another one of those wealthy guys who tries to prove how in touch he is with the common man and just comes off looking totally patronizing.

Some interesting stuff from this article.

He even dismisses the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities, which he implies are merely a ruse to get sick kids hooked on the Big Mac.

That alone makes me want to whack him hard. My older daughter was born very premature and we stayed at Ronald McDonald House so we could be close to her at the hospital. Want to know how much advertising of McDonald's or their products i saw there? ZERO.

I couldn't stand his girlfriend from the moment during Supersize Me she was whining over how she had to be on top when they had sex.

Him, he's typical of the 'Since this is a revelation to me it has to be one for the world' sorts that from what I've seen tend to be pouring out of the colleges more often than not lately. They just can't comprehend that most of us already knew this kinda thing and just move on.

But still, not worth that kind of wank.

I had no desire to watch Super Size Me before (Because, really, spending 5 dlls to see a man getting fat by eating burgers wasn't exactly my idea of 5 dlls well spent), and now I have even less desire to watch it.

For what I have read, that man is an ass.

(And can someone explain me what was the point of the Super Size Me thing? Too much food + too little exercice = weight gain, as far as I remember. What was he trying to prove?)

Some supposedly odd things happened, too. Like that his liver started going nuts from all the fat and it was beginning to get dangerous, like he'd been drinking excessively for years.

The documentary, IMO, in essence isn't "omg I gained so much weight!", that's just the set-up around which he looks at the fast food industry and the lies it uses to sell its products to people, especially kids. It's worth a watch if you can rent it for a few dollars or borrow a DVD from a friend or something. It's interesting and kind of turns you off fast food, which is always a good thing, in a way.

Supersize Me was flawed from the beginning. Starting off, he'd been eating a vegetarian/vegan diet for a goodly while before going on the fast food diet. Now while nothing's wrong with a vegetarian/vegan diet, it doesn't change that the body's used to a particular 'style' and immediately switching not only to the meat in a fast food diet, but the lower end quality of meat that's in fast food, it was pretty obvious this wasn't going to go well on his system especially when he started heaving up on like day two. Anyone with basic common sense would know that's not normal.

Pretty much he was presenting things as all most people do is eat fast food constantly which we all know isn't the truth, along with all fast food is the heavy grease type.

All he accomplished was getting his name known, getting McDonalds to drop the Supersize option (and I really liked the Supersized soda, that would last me hours), and risking his health with a diet no one on this planet ever followed.

I don't think his point was as simple as "too much fast food = weight gain." I think the film was more of a challenge to some claims McDonald's had made themselves, stating that McDonald's was "perfectly healthy, yay!" The film was his way of saying, "Okay, let's see if you're as 'healthy' as you claim to be."

Also, the title came from McDonald's then-policy to try to encourage all customers to "supersize" their orders because it was a "better value" -- part of his experiment was to always say "yes" if the cashier said "and would you like to supersize your meal?" As a result, he reguarly ended up eating enough food for a family of three in one sitting.

So it wasn't just as simple as "too much food = weight gain," it was more "too much food = weight gain AND McDonalds = cons you into eating too much without you noticing."

Disclaimer: I'm actually kind of indifferent to the guy, but I read a lot about the film when it came out and saw much kerfluffle about what his point actually was. Plus, I noticed that shortly after the film was released, McDonald's announced it was ending it's "supersize" promotion and hard-selling.

I found the message of the film to basically be, "Fast Food is bad for you and Americans shouldn't eat so much of it ... BUT McDonalds isn't telling you the truth when they say that their food is perfectly fine."

I did like the film, but that was more for the expose of the school cafeterias than the stuff about McDonalds. I think New Jersey got rid of its vending machines in schools after the movie, which I'm really glad about.

A properly made hamburger, grilled in the outdoors on a warm summer's evening from a thick, hand-made patty to precisely the right throughness, is truly a delight. I will thank you not to mock it.
