How Stella Got Her Homophobia Back
Over at Oh No They Didn't, Guinastasia posts on author Terry McMillian being interviewed for BET's news special "The Down Low Exposed".  (For those not up on the lingo, "Down low" refers to men - black men in particular - who carry on clandestine affairs with other men while keeping up marriages or hetero relationships.  Said men often insist that they're straight; they "just have sex with men")  McMillian pretty much uses the occasion to open fire on her "down-low" ex-husband (who happens to be suing her for support).

Guinastasia, in a wonderful display of Missing The Point Entirely, sees it as a dirty, dirty slander on gays, and pretty much gets the wank started.

-Terry, you need to have your gaydar fixed, because that boy was FLAMING. Get over it, you homophobic twat. If he cheated on you with a woman, would you still be crowing about disease? Probably not. Now I'm not defending the the whole "down low" mentality. But attitudes like her's are the reason many choose to stay on the down low rather than coming out and being honest and open.

ladycakes kicks off the official wank with "She is a hateful monster."

And we're off!

I'm in there, but my contribution is small enough that I think it can go here instead of [info]i_wank.

I'm sitting on my hands right now because...dayum...I'd be a lot more crass if I found out my SO was cheating on me with men or women. Especially if he'd been doing it with random strangers without protection (which was what happened in this case) and then came home and had unprotected sex with me.

Icing on cake: he now wants her to pay support.

As far as I could see, the article itself showed her as pissed and bitter (and considering she wrote a book based on her "romance" with this guy, add points for public humiliation). As for anything she said to him that was nasty in the middle of a fight and a divorce? Jesus. Cut the woman some slack. The guy conned her, used her, and exposed her to any number of STDs. He should be glad he's still got intact kneecaps.

Exactly. Would it have been heterophobic had she made the hot sauce comment and simply changed it to say "go fuck a woman with AIDS juice" or whatever?

If he cheated on you with a woman, would you still be crowing about disease?

She's missing a couple of key points here, and that is that men on the DL rarely use protection. Why? For two reasons, because there is no risk of pregnancy and because carrying a comdom with they have these encounters would force them to admit to themselves they're meeting men for sex. This has way less to so with Terry McMillan's attitude (who by the way has every right to be pissed off) and more to do with cultural machismo that encourages men to have lots of relationships with women because that is what they are supposed to do.

Also? If you know you have The AIDS and you are still having unprotected sex with uninformed people that can and has been considered attempted murder.

Has it been? Everything I've heard is it's reckless endangerment. Attempted murder implies that they want them to get it and die, and I don't think that quite fits.

Depends on the case. If you know you have AIDS and sleep with someone with the specific intent of infecting them, it's attempted murder. If you're just too stupid/proud to use a condom, it's reckless endangerment or a similar charge. In order to prove any murder charge (with the exception of felony murder), one must prove intent to kill.

Your icon has hypnotized me.

On topic...yeah, saying something against a person who is (kinda, sorta) gay =/= homophobia. Gay people can be inconsiderate fuckers, too. And when Guinastasia finds out her partner has exposed her to a host of potentially life-threatening diseases...well, I'm sure she'll just be loving and supportive. Except not.

(Cannot even imagine what would happen if I was in Terry's place. I would probably be in jail for attempted murder.)

if i were gay, i wouldn't want Guinastasia ranting on my behalf.

so...if a guy is referred to as "on the down low" it means he's in the closet? it's not applicable to bisexuals?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

iwanttobeasleep

In theory it would apply to both, but I think it's safe to assume that a bisexual black man would not bother with being on the down low, because if he feels that way about homosexuality and can ignore his homosexual side he would just turn to women for cheating.

For the most part it means "in denial" more than "in the closet." To them, they're just getting them some on the side. It just so happens that that "some" has a penis, too.

I feel so bad for the gay community anymore. Either they're deviant monsters or helpless victims. For sanity's sake people, they're gay. GAY. This means they want to fuck people of the same gender, not that they're subhumans incapable of expressing full range of human emotion and pesona. What [info]guinastasia is doing is just another form of prejudice with a sympathetic facade.

I watched that documentary and Terry McMillan was not homophobic, nor was she hateful. She was a woman who was angry at being lied to and betrayed by someone she loved, and she was very much entitled to feel that way.

I'm straight, but someday I want to be a gay-bolitionist and free the queers. Except I'll be freeing them from their defenders, those lovely people who keep them naked and oiled and chained to their halos. I'll form the Underground UnderRoos Railroad and, in the dead of night, when their cruel het overlords are asleep cuddled up to the two Stretch Armstrong dolls they had welded together, I'll sneak into the plantation's musical theatre district, where the gays are imprisoned and forced to plant bon mots while wearing nothing but the fabulously stylish rags on their back. They will gladly take a break from their night-long orgies of tenderly lubricated anal acrobatics and when I lead them to the promised land of New York's garment district, I will look back on the newly-freed gays and, with breathless hope, wait for one of them to rudely belch the opening bars of Battle Hymn of the Republic. For then, and only then, will I be able to sleep contentedly knowing that I rescued them from the Light Side of the Gay.

It's a small fantasy, I know, but we must make do with what we can.

Stop being on my side, you're making it look stupid. It annoys me when people who fancy themselves open minded and crusaders of The Gay jump in and scream homophobia at the smallest provocation. It was pretty obvious to me that she was bitter about the affairs in general. The fact that the affairs were done with men were incidental.

Bitch, please. Several years ago I had a boyfriend who convinced me to go on BC and have unprotected sex with him, which I figured was fine, considering we were in a committed relationship and whatnot. Obviously I was young and stupid, because he fucked countless other women at the time, and I have no clue whether he used protection or not. And I'm STILL bitching about it the betrayal and complete disregard for my health, years and years later. Your argument is pathetic and unbelieveable. STFU.

Dear Gay-Rights Activists:

STOP making really complicated shit into something that is completely simple and black-and-white.

First off, homophobia is pretty much all-encompassing, especially in the African-American and Latino communities, where you can't be a 'real man' without dating/marrying women.

Second off, people whose SO's have cheated on them tend to be extremely hurt and bitter over it, NO MATTER who they were cheating with. To some straight people, it's just that a homosexual affair is worse, because (as they see it) not only were they lying about their fidelity, but their sexual orientation. (Because no one thinks of the bisexuals LOL.)

In other words, COMPLICATED HUMAN RELATIONS.
