Over on [info]ohnotheydidnt, somebody posts an article regarding New York's demand to remove the trailer for Flight 93, a movie based on the events of 9-11, as it was upsetting too many people. In addition, it reports that the studio does plan to move forward with the movie, donating 10% of the first three days' revenue.

Perhaps understandably, wank happens everywhere, about every thing imaginable.

I don't think September 11th should be exempt from movies, etc. It's not like I have to see them but the movie poster for Flight 93 is what's going to make me avoid this one.

Hell, if we have movies about Pearl Harbor, it's not like a movie won't get made about 9-11 at some point anyway.

Didn't TNT or somebody already make a made-for-TV movie about this exact same subject? I think the director is a day late and a dollar short on this movie idea. Talk about trying to get blood from a stone...

Here's my question, outside of all questions of propriety: how can they make a movie about it if they don't know what happened? I mean, I think the black box records the cockpit stuff, but in the passenger area? Do they know enough about what went down to actually dramatise it?

I think the studios and directors who are going to rake in billions grandstanding on that event are crude, shallow, grandstanding bastards, but that said, that's not reason enough to prevent them. As much as I think profiteers are filthy, the First Amendment lets them trivialize tragedy for cash.

The conspiracy theorists are a hoot, I have to say. The whole "Loose Change" thing is pretty damn funny, when it comes right down to it. Kind of like "Tornado Hunters" and everyone else who thinks they can accomplish some deep investigation or dramatic technological breakthrough without the use of science.

I really don't understand how anyone can be surprised that they're making a movie about it. Srly.

I probably won't go see this simply because I saw the trailer (right before Ice Age: The Meltdown and man was that a shocker) and it...well, really didn't look very good, to be honest. Oh well.

Man, do I ever feel like wanking about this, cause I saw the movie poster tonight at the theater and felt rather ill. I just think it's too soon to be making a movie about those events. I know it's been five years, but people are still feeling the aftermath of it emotionally, including me, and I didn't lose anyone.

The callousness of the whole thing bothers me. The Pearl Harbor movies probably would too, if I had been closer to the events. It's all about perspective.

1) Why is there wank NOW? It's not like this movie was a secret.

2) Why this particular flight? What's the angle? I mean, what's the time line? Plane takes off, terrorists make their move, news comes in about the other crashes, "Let's Roll!", kaboom! Would make a fascinating A&E/History Channel special. Movie... not so much.

3) As for the people getting freaked about the trailer... People, calm the fuck down! This isn't even a movie about the Twin Towers!

There's got to be some kind of math formula for how long we have to wait to make a movie about a tragedy. We can base it off of Schindler's List, because there's a movie that only crackpots are going to call insensitive.

11 million dead in the Holocaust, and Schindler's List opened 48 years after the fact. Rounding up to give the victims the benefit of the doubt, that's one year that we have to wait for every 229,167 victims of the real deal to make a movie about it.

With 3,030 people dead in all the attacks, and again rounding up, the first acceptable date for releasing a film about September 11, 2001 was September 16, 2001.

Now will all these people just stop their bitching?

I don't know which is worse: the trailer or "it's been five years. Get over it."

There are waaay too many stories and memories to share here, but that's completely fucking tactless of whoever made the decision to have the trailer shown in NYC theatres. Then again, I don't know why the films need to be made in the first place.

Did Flight 93 go anywhere near New York? Are we now in the age of Pain by Proxy? Are the bastards trying to co-opt Pennsylvania's suffering and leave those poor Pennsylvanites with only the dregs? It's important that I know if that's a legitimate practice, because I once slipped on a rock and fell into a lake while dressed in heavy clothes and had the damnedest time making it to shore, and I'm pretty sure that's what bothered me most about the tsunami that hit Asia. You know, the associations.

My brother goes to the movies several times a week, and said everytime they show the trailer for flight 93 some people walk out. And damn, playing it during ice age 2! I hope this movie, and the other one bombs. It's not just that it's too early, I think a documentry type would be ok (and most of the money should go towards the victim's families), but the Nick Cage one looks like a love story.. using 911 as a setting for a love story is disgusting.

From the one thing I read about the trailer, it starts out with a shot of the plane flying into the World Trade Center - and that's why the people (in that particular article) were upset because they're all "La la, I'm waiting to watch Denzel's new movie" *BAM airplane flying into WTC*" I can sort of see where those people are coming from.

Go with this a second --

I'd be curious to hear from all the wankers -- who was here in NYC when 9/11 happened, and who wasn't. I'd be willing to bet that all the people who are saying "it's too soon" were here on that day, and the people who aren't, weren't.

This is something I've tested before -- I co-run a theater company, and we got a play once that was set during 9/11, but the play was about a number of different kinds of loss as well rather than being just strictly about that. It was a good play, but my business partner and I debated whether it was "too soon" for it, and whether the 9/11 material was going to just overshadow the other stuff.

We did a staged reading of the play and had a post-show discussion, and there was a split in the audience between people who thought it was too soon and people who didn't. People debated back and forth for a while, and finally I had an idea. I asked for a show of hands, who was here in NYC on that day and who wasn't. All the people who were saying "it's too soon", were here on that day.

Not sure where I'm going with this, other than "cut those in New York a little bit of slack, because it was a direct hit here and some of us are still a little sensitive about that." Me, personally, I just sort of rolled my eyes when I heard it was being made and figured that yeah, it was probably inevitable. I'd get over it, but I'm pretty sure that I'd still even today be thrown if I suddenly saw 9/11 footage and hadn't been expecting it.

You know what I think they should do about the movie? Remake it into a musical. I mean, we all know that it's going to be cheesy and shmaltzy and emotionally manipulative anyways, so why not go all out? Terrorists in turbans laden with sequins, stewardess chorus girls in fishnets and miniskirts, dance numbers in the aisle, and don't forget the token couple who falls in love too late! I think this may be just what America needs to cope with this tragic loss.

Entertainment? I didn't go see Schindler's List just for the entertainment, or Downfall. I went because I wanted to know more about why.

And I guess it is entertainment, in a way. I just didn't realise that movie directors were not allowed to make movies about history, coz, really, if that's the case, all those Vietnam films should be shelved, not to mention tv shows like M.A.S.H.

And no, I don't think the events of 9/11 are too close to make a film about it. But I question the motive, considering the war in Iraq is still going strong, I wonder if it's just a plain propaganda film for the cause. But I'm interested to see how Oliver Stone will handle the subject.

So what's the deal with Loose Change? I've had a look over their website, but have better things (ie, Finals revision) to do with my life than watch their video. Is it just the usual conspiracy theories that no-one with an ounce of common sense and reasoning takes seriously, or is there actually something in what they have to say?

Excuse me, I'm still busy being offended over the Spiderman trailer featuring the World Trade Centers.

WHY OH WHY DID THEY NOT KEEP IT?! IT WAS SO COOL.

Okay, but where were all of these people during the tragedy of Flight Plane with Snakes In? Why's no one getting upset over that movie, eh?
