The feed for Snopes includes yet another urban legend about how disgustingly ungrateful all those evil, lazy, good-for-nothing folks whose city just got destroyed by a big fuck-off hurricane are. [info]henwy complains that people should instead focus on how very stupid the children of these evil folks are. Predictably, wank ensues.

Why make up stuff when there are actual things to be outraged about. The fact that the katrina people's kids are stupider than dirt is one of them. Only about half of the morons can even make basic requirements.

Okay, then! I'll be "outraged" that someone else's kids do poorly on standardized tests. How dare those kids do this to me?! I'm writing my Congressman right now, and next week, I'll organize a "Million Shitheads March against Stuff That's None of Our Damn Business."

[info]henwy says 2,000 out of 38,000 and then proceeds to IGNORE the next post about "How is that half?" and provides some random illogical reasoning.

He made my heart hurt for humanity.

Sadly, in that particular incident only, I think his reasoning was correct - 38,000 was the TOTAL number of Katrina refugee students enrolled in Texas schools and the test was only take by students in 3rd and 5th grade, 2000 of whom failed.

That said, he's still a total waste of oxygen.

Only 58 percent of evacuees in third grade passed the reading portion, compared with 89 percent of all students. In fifth grade, 46 percent of evacuees passed the reading portion, versus 80 percent among all students.

For what it's worth, I think this is the part of the article the dumbass was struggling so hard to put into words.

Kids failing a standardized test is their fault how, exactly? Seems like it reflects more on their home life and the schools (both in LA and Texas). Jeez, I'm a 4.0 student, and if I went through what those kids did, I'd be failing the damn test, too. Not to mention that if you're not taught something, you can't be expected to know it.

I'd fail anyway. Those tests have no bearing on my personal grades, so why bother trying? Fill in all the Cs, and do the homework I brought with me.

I'm sure if I were a debater, I'd be tossed off the team. If I were a politician, I'd see it replayed over and over on CNN. But in the grand scheme of internet arguing, it's probaly par for the course overall. That and the sheer sophistry of the argument ticked me off.

"Because blaming the fact they can't read on the fact they're idiots, wouldn't be very PC, would it? Frankly, I'm not sure if all of them could have passed if they just put the lot of them in kindergarten to start." -- henwy

As much as I normally hate Political Correctness, I'm beginning to hate people who cover up their obvious biases by bitching about it. It used to be kinda amusing, in a really stupid way, but it's getting really fucking old.

(Before any of you mistake me for one of those, I should point out that I live in California. Here, PC usually means cowardly bullies playing bitch-ass word games against people who already know that racism, sexism, and homophobia are bad things, and who are desperate not to be unfairly tarred with the intolerance brush. My current favorite example is bitching about how sexist it is to refer to plugs and sockets as "male" and "female" connectors.)

It's really fucking sad that a certain portion of America has to villify the victims to make itself feel better about a botched situation. I think that's what galls me the most about these douchebags. Instead of dealing with guilt, sorrow, the fact their pet government jacked off at the wrong time, etc., they have to beat down people who suffered the most. OMGZ JUST LAZY POOR STUPID WELFARE DARKIES WHO COULDNT JACK A SKOOL BUS OR OUTJOG A HURRICANE

aklsdjalksjd SO MAD.

1) Of course a traumatic life-changing experience would never have anything to do with children performing below expectations on a standardized test from a state not their own. How silly to think otherwise! I know stress has never got in the way of my own performance in school.

2) Kids who score poorly on standardized tests aren't necessarily stupid. Standardized testing is in itself a flawed concept, both in the measuring of a child's intellect (some kids learn in different ways than others) and influencing the curriculums of many schools (including ones I attended) to teach a single test or test-series, rather than focusing on teaching the subject.

3) It's a Texas standardized test, goddamn. The schools in Louisiana are not geared to teaching the children the information that would be on the standardized tests in Texas (argh). I aced the SOLs in Virginia in the sixth grade; that doesn't mean I'd ace the TAKs in Texas that same year.

(Er, two and three mostly in response to this thread.)

Yes, some children are just born idiots. It's not because of a bad education, learning difficulty, mental impairment, or trauma - they're just magically idiots. Yes. Of course.

but I can guarentee you that vermont or minnesota is not gong to want to contribute when they have no stake in it.

Because, y'know, no refugees from the hurricane were sent up to Minnesota. Except for the part where my college definitely hosted Tulane students all last semester (mostly nursing students) and there were other refugees of the hurricane in other areas in the Twin Cities.

Way to spout off random, incorrect gibberish, henwy.
