No Soup For You!
Over at [info]angryletters, [info]thevioletangel posts a rant about how a waitress at Denny's gave her vegetable beef soup instead of broccoli cheese. [info]snowowl takes offense at this. The ensuing exchange is wanky enough, but then [info]thevioletangel makes a followup post.

Remember, kids: Soup is serious business.

ETA: It continues!

She sighed her second letter "Somebody who DOESN'T take life so damn seriously". That makes me laugh.

I love how the chick is like, "she messed your order up, didn't fix it, and you didn't tip her? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" XD

The customer isn't there to serve the waitress, people.

I know; I mean, the OP is perhaps a little too highstrung for her own good, but who doesn't get annoyed when the waitress brings you the wrong food, is slow about correcting it, and then tries to charge you for both?

I was wondering about that too. I don't think that messing up two orders is petty. Hello, it's what you come in the restaurant for! Perhaps next time the waitress will be more careful with the orders.

I'm obviously a complete freak, but I'd have tipped her anyway. She fucked up, she's human, I probably wouldn't have been as generous as I normally am, but I'd still feel guilty not leaving a couple of bucks.

You're not a freak.

The only time I don't tip is if the server has been rude or is obviously not trying to give good service. Mistakes happen, and people rely on that money to live. I think that people who don't tip because their server made a mistake are assholes, actually.

I've read far too many customers_suck entries and worked as a cashier for too long to not be polite if that had happened to me. Sure I would've been pissed, but I still would have been nice to the server. It's not their fault. (At least, not usually.)

I've also read Fight Club, and am paranoid I might be at a place that actually does that to food. Even though I doubt most places do. Hopefully.

We still can't understand how that alone would upset you enough to not leave a tip.

Well, it might be because you're retarded.

I probably would have tipped her like the bare minimum or below, I leave no tips to people that are really nasty.

However, I hate how tipping is now apparantly a standard, I thought it was for a job well done? I think we need to follow the UK's example (and most of Europe too I think?) and give servers a decent hourly wage (or even minimum at least) and tipping can go back to being for exceptionally good service.

Also: I like how two of the mods icons have poses that are almost exactly the same.

Rargh. Comment got eaten.

At least most of the chain restaurants aren't as bad as some of the single places. One of my old flatmates works at a sushi joint that does the "tipping pool" thing where all the waitresses and waiters have to turn in their tips at the end of the night, and it gets divided evenly. Moreover, if one server fucks up, everybody's cut gets lessened to cover whatever the mistakes cost. She came home in tears after one shift when she and another girl racked up an eight hundred dollar tip on a group of 25 people (Their bill was summat like over thousand dollars from all the extra food and liquor they'd ordered, and they were at the table for over five hours), and had to share it with the eight other servers, including a girl who'd screwed up six orders in one night. And then got their cuts lessened because of her screwups. So out of an eight hundred dollar tip that she should have gotten half of, she ended up getting about sixty dollars.

Ironically, it's mostly servers who are against a standard wage for service in place of tipping culture, because tipping lets them come out better in many situations than, say, $9 an hour as a flat wage - especially places that serve alcohol.

Mistakes happen. People are human. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones and what-not.

Then again, I'm one of those weirdos who would just eat whatever soup I got and not complain if they're all the same price. Food's food *shrug*

On average, I tip 18%. And when I'm in a rush or feeling too lazy for real math, I'll tip 21% because I just triple the sales tax.

The only time I've ever not left a tip was for a server who was a complete asshole. And by complete asshole, I mean making repeated sleazy advances despite rather obvious hints that I wasn't interested because he was thirty years my senior, and slipping his number in with my check. But he was special.

It's fun how math!laziness influences the amount you tip, isn't it? *g* My mom actually calculates 15%, but I think it's easier to divide by six and then round up a bit.

We don't tip here, it's not a standard, it's not required regardless of whether you do a good job or not. That's what the service tax we have here is for.

Of course, if I like my waiter/waitress and they did a good job, friends and I would usually leave a small token for them *hearts the great waiters/waitresses she's had*

And coming from a service background (waiting tables/sales/7-11 store assistant/usher) I have a standard myself, so I'm of the mind that if "I can do it, why can't you?" Food that gets served wrongly is a mistake, whther or not the waiter gets tipped at the end depends on how well he/she rectifies it. If she knew that the soup was wrong, and she brings back the wrong soup again, I wouldn't have tipped her. If she had apologised, or made the situation better, then there wouldn't have been anything to complain about. People do understand that wait-staff are humans too, and mistakes happen.

[Of course, I may be putting too much belief in the basic human nature]

"Well obviously if the complaint is against the food then it isn't the server's fault. The server didn't prepare the food, the kitchen did."

And how do the Waitress Defenders know this? Hmm? Were THEY there when the waitress wrote it down? Were they there when the kitchen did or did not screw up the order?

"Well how do you know what she thought? You can't read her mind. For all you (or the rest of us know) she didn't hear what you asked for."

Exactly, how do they know what she thought? Perhaps the waitress IS an incompetent moron! You don't know!
