Communities like [info]bad_service never fail to disappoint, really.

[info]ariel770 got a Canadian penny in her change. She does not like it.

I went to Radioshack this weekend to buy a phone charger for my car. My total was like $21.88. I hand the man $22. He hands me back a dime, a penny and a Canadian penny. I looked at it and said, "This is a Canadian penny." and attempt to give it back to him. He looked at me and said, "So?"

"So?!?!? Asshole I live in freaking Missouri! What good is a Canadian Penny going to do me? It's not legal tender here so basically you just cheated me out of money!"

Of course I didn't say that I was just too stunned I walked away

Because obviously no one in the history of US currency has ever received a Canadian coin or two in their change. The poor dear is financially ruined.

Responses range from making this point many, many times with varying levels of snark and/or profanity to supporting the OP's horror to pointing out that the bad service came not from the OMG FAKE MONEY but from the cashier's attitude.

I mean, sure it isn`t technically worth as much as a US Penny... *shrug* it just strikes me as the same as getting / receiving US coins in Canada...

What the hell does it matter? Other than making sure you've got the right change as they put it in the drawer, no cashier's gonna give a shit about accepting a Canadian penny. Or nickel. Or, fuck, even a quarter. Hell, I've gotten 'em in my drawer just from going to the cash office and getting my money bag for the shift. It's not like she totally got shafted by some OMGEVIL cashier who couldn't count change right.

After my years of cashiering, I'd've reacted just like the cashier here. "So?". Canadian pennies are the exact same as the US ones just with a different striking on it and they will go through the Coinstar machine as well as the bank's counter.

Though biggest fussup I ever saw when it came to 'odd money' was trying to calm down another cashier over the $20 bill from 1935 wasn't counterfeit, just old.

Bitch, please. The other day I somehow wound up with a Canadian quarter in my laundry change. It wouldn't work in the coin slot, and I had to walk the whole 100 feet back from the laundry building and up three flights of stairs to get a real quarter. And it messed up my timing for the dryer, too (2 quarters for 30 minutes, but it takes 45 to dry your clothes), so I wound up wasting another 50 cents.

Now that's REAL suffering. I tell you, if I only knew which cashier foisted off that fake quarter on me, why I'd go back and make him eat it.

apparently in Missouri, they don't even take all of the US's legal tender anyway. My boyfriend was there for grad school and got a bunch of the Sacajawia (yes, can't spell it) dollar coins from the post office and not a single other business in the area would take them.

Ok, to the commenter who had a hissy fit about washing machines not accepting Canadian quarters?

They won't accept American pennies, nickels, or dimes, either, and while I'm at it, I have yet to find a vending machine that will accept American pennies.

I can understand the annoyance at receiving Canadian change but to echo the majority of folks on that board, in this case it's a fucking penny.

Anyone who can afford internet access can't be that destitute that the loss of a penny is going to make them starve.

Want to complain about similar looking coins? Remember the Susan B. Anthony coins? Now there was a reason to gnash one's teeth.

Related anecdote: I got a video game token in my roll of NH toll tokens. Since the video game place they came from had closed in my area, I threw it right back in the basket next time I hit the toll booth, to see if it would work, and voila, it did.

DUDE, IT'S A FREAKING PENNY. IT'S ONE CENT. Even if the penny were completely useless, it's one cent. You can't buy anything with one cent anyway.

But that doesn't even matter because they're not completely useless. I've given people Canadian pennies before and never had a problem with the other person just accepting it.

Canadian coinage, especially pennies, happens a lot here in Wisconsin, and it's pretty much just taken as a given at least in my hometown. If anything, it's a cause for childhood squeeing; a kid will act like they came across a gold coin if they spot the "ONE CENT" and olive branches just because it's so different, and not know or care that it's because its a Canadian penny.
