I don't think there has ever been wank in the lovely community names lab_gripes. It's mostly fun and games, but yesterday, it exploded a bit.

Someone is a bit annoyed with med students. People agree that med students can be... less than smart...

A med student is not amused

Highlights:

Every single pre-med classmate I've encountered has gone on to become a Med School Monster. Every single one.

aw, did we challenge the notion that all med students are super-intellegent, god-like creatures who should have every whim catered to because they are such stressed out martyrs? How dare we lowly jealous cowards do that! oh please let me apoligize!

A bit small-ish, but fun.

But maybe I've been brainwashed by all the nice med students...

I remember my dad saying in med school he disliked 'med students' (even though he, um, was one). But he had a lot of friends in the program and he liked my mom (also a med student) obviously. I think it's the syndrome of 'omg i h8 med studentz!' based on one or two arrogant jerks that even other med students hate.

:-/ It bugs me too. Besides my parents being med students once, my best friend is at Johns Hopkins now and she's the awesomest person who ever awesomed.

Please be nice. Else it makes one look bitter. Rumor has it a few people can't make it to med school, and go to grad school instead. I certainly hope no one uses the angry statements from a few grad students as evidence of jealousy.

Passive aggressive, much? Way to prove the other side's point- and then not respond when repeatedly called on it.

Wow, I'm just amazed that as a journalism major I mostly get to ignore the pretension. The Communication majors all know they're at the bottom of the ladder in terms of respect, so they just pick on other communication majors.

Journalism: "We may be poor, but at least we're not PR majors."
Public Relations: "Shut up, poor horz!"
Writing Arts: "We're more creative and cooler than the both of you put together!"
Journalism and PR: "LOL! Yeah, right."

Except for the communication studies majors, of course. They just get stared at like they're some sort of alien species.

At my school, they stopped grading the pre-med biology class on a curve after they gave a lab exam that involved looking in microscopes and identifying what the arrow was pointed to on a slide. The first students to go on each of the microscopes changed what the arrow was point to so that everyone behin d them failed the test. Probably unfair, but that's still the first thing I think of when I think of "pre-meds."

Best comments, from lj_ewrailnly:

My dad is a farmer, "How hard can that be?" DAMN HARD! I admire him; I know I wouldn't want all of the headaches he has in his business, and I probably couldn't do it anyway. As one person already said, "Med school is hard. Grad school is hard." Waitressing is hard, mechanic work is hard, coal mining is hard. I think that next time I see a garbage truck roll by, I'll think twice about how hard going to school is...regardless of what program I'm in. I am VERY glad to have the brains and motivation to do what I'm doing. We are all forunate in that respect. Why are we wasting our smarts on this petty discussion?

Only sensible outlook in the whole discussion. :)

My husband was a med student. U-Penn, actually. Groomed to be a doctor his whole life. So principled he was thinking about becoming an OB-GYN/abortionist in an underserved area, despite the risks. He set up clinics for poor women in West Philly and got several faculty members at the school to provide the basic services he believed should be the inalienable right of every citizen. Incredibly nice, sweet, generous, and brilliant.

Which is why he dropped out - he couldn't stand his classmates.

Heh, I used to be pre-med. My classmates ranged from jocktacular moron to humble supergenius. But I didn't have the marks for it. A lot of people who would have made great doctors (not that a lot of the ones in med school won't) if they had done better in school.

Ahhh, I love science majors. The in-fighting between all the colleges in the School of Natural Sciences & Mathematics is so fun to watch! Bio/Chem death match! Everyone ganging up on the nursing students who have to take stats! Physics and Comp Sci cage fight! Math being the only true science!

I don't have time to fight with the other science majors though, since I'm a chick in Computer Science, which means I'm way too busy defending myself against all the guys in my own major.

And that has nothing to do with the fact that I knit during lectures...
