It's the same-old-same-old...

RPG players decide to publish their RPG through a subsidy(?) press.

RPG players promote themselves.

RPG players get crit.

All hell breaks loose.

Highlights include:
For future reference, the next time you endeavor to provide a 'critique' please refrain from using an unprofessional point of refrence like Fiction Press. It discredits your stance as a reviewer if the best examples you can provide are the purely recreational writings such websites showcase. Instead, tell us where you've been published---your credentials. Validate yourself as a knowldegeable source and your comments will be taken with less levity.
And:
If you are not an editor, bookseller, publisher or agent, your opinion means absolutely zip.
And the infamous!
good luck with this story and forget people that don't know anything! (they are really just jealous)

Edit: F_locked. Screencaps, anyone?
Edit 2: Back up!

Yeah. I mean, I'm only the person you're trying to get to drop money on your book; my opinion couldn't possibly mean anything.

You know, I review and comment on the occasional OEL manga on my LJ and every single one of the creators who have dropped out of lurkerdom and posted has acted with grace and class, even when I criticized portions of their work. It's not an impossible thing to do.

I've rewritten entire chapters of my stuff because people gave me crit that made sense. I fully understand that I'm not going to progress as a writer unless I learn to take criticism... And, well, how can I hope to be successful if I don't improve?

And better fanfiction.

Sigh.

Okay, maybe I'm tired. I misinterpreted that as them trying to get an RPG video game they developed published rather than a fiction novel based on a roleplay they did.

Christ, I hate people like that. Shitty writing is shitty writing, no matter who's doing it or where you find it. I wish authors like that would suck it up and deal with the fact that not everyone's got their lips that firmly planted to the author's ass. Though saying "It's getting published!" is fairly stupid anyway, looking at some of the tripe that gets trotted out as hot shit nowadays.

But I guess since I write and publish gay porn on the internets I'm not qualified to say anything. D:

I think there's a certain kind of writing for which the author can disregard the reader's opinion more or less if they lack the proper credentials - extremely high-brow, academic writing, composed for a very select group of individuals.

He arched up bringing their groins in contact enough to send a jolt through his rock hard cock.

Which this is, er, not. Being a yaoi fan is all the credentials one needs to critique this, because we're the only people who would ever consider reading it.

The writing was okay, I guess. All that earnest wanking about fingernails was more entertaining.

And, personally, I would love to see a Mythbusters-like show on yaoi and slash. "So, what do you think?" "The self-lubricating ass? Totally busted."

totally QAF memory here

*Hunter is all smiles and slitting open the letter regarding the unpublished novel Ben sent in, while Michael's all ears*
Michael: Well?
Hunter *still maintaining kick-ass whoopdedoo grin*: They think it sucks.

If these RPGwhatsits work on it, they might elevate the writing from average to outstandingly average. After all, they sure can keep whatever readers they have in bated suspense, always waiting for something to happen.

Earth, don't just stand there! Move!

4) Comparing this to fanfics in any genre-- slash or not-- is absurd as most fanfics are barely readable and seldom have much of a plot.

Yes, because that NEVER happens in published works. Writing is not just writing - the quality of writing is PURELY DEPENDANT of where it comes from.

That's kinda like saying one pile of shit is magically better than another pile of shit because it came out of a different butt.

I love the bit about "Being offered a contract is a good critique", because crappy authors never get offered contracts.

Somebody's channeling the not-dead spirit of Lee Goldberg, I think.

"However it really is unfair to judge an entire 120,000 word novel on one small excerpt lifted from a much longer scene. "

Hmmm... now where have I heard that excuse before...

Oh yes, the Venom Cock debacle! Ah good times, good times. Look, the point of an Excerpt is to tantalize the reader into wanting to read more and hopefully throw down money to get it. It's your job to pick a excerpt that best advertises your book. If you pick a crappy (error riddled)passage as bait, that's what they'll think the rest of the book's about/like. Don't be mad at your potential customers for making judgments on your book based on a excerpt you provided.

Also, telling potential customers they're not qualified to judge your work, not so much with the good idea.

I can see where they're coming from with the "as long as you're making money it's all good" sort of thinking (as I think both writing for profit and writing for fun, or to educate, or any other reason just happen to be different outlooks), except the logic seems to go "we're published and that's good and therefore our work must be a good work." It's sort of the Lee Goldberg Standard of Writing Quality; if something is published, it must be a good story, because it was published. It's times like this that I'm always sort of inclined to point out that some publishers consider publishing your story online to be the first publishing and will be less apt to take the story, and therefore anything put up online is arguably published.
