Anime North Artist Alley Mini-Wank.
Although this is about an anime con it's more about real people screwing the pooch on a business-type contract. So, I figured this was the spot for it over F_W...

Seems that the people running Artist Alley for Anime North are a bunch of moronic, incompetent hacks. They screwed up registration, made strange policies, tried to ban fanworks after people had paid...and more. The entire message board seems to be nothing but complaints (some legit) against the staff. Although, even those who are politely offering suggestions for not making such a mess next year are being told to STFU.

Prime Example: Where the mods tell people they can't jump the waiting list and some members complain about the mismanagement. Other AN staff members show up and defend the AA people. Mini-Wank ensues.

Oh! I heard about this a while ago! One of my f-list on el jay was going to try to get a table.

Really, it's all stupid from what I've managed to find out....

Anime North wank? I feel connected somehow. Glad I don't have to worry about selling my artshit or anything there - I just have to worry about selling plushes at my work's booth.
I managed keychains last year.
My ears still ring from the squealing. Oh god, the squealing.

So, it's Bad to jump the waiting list by being proactive, getting in touch with friends, and finding a way to share a table. But it's Stupid to believe the information on the con webpage and choose *not* to engage in the same behavior--labelled as "Bad" above, but in this instance apparently Good and Proper--to secure a table in the first place.

Gotcha.

Was this decision aided or harmed by the fact that you're banned from F_W?

Why did you bring up that issue when it's already done and over with? Or better even, something that should be discussed on AN's message board instead of here.

Should we apologize for trying to improve from last year's mess that was AA registration? No. I agree that there could have been more than just a week's advance notice about registering your AN badge separately from the AA space, but otherwise, it's the artists' job to get the information on what's happening at AA. All the ones that have been registered so far made efforts to keep up with news and were literate enough to understand the registration procedure. They got their spot at AA.

I'm sorry for everyone else who doesn't have a space, but it's not our responsibility to hold everyone's hand and go through it step by step for them. Jessica, Noreen and I have done our best to facilitate it. We've been helpful where we could. We've given pointers when they were needed. We've made announcements when it was required for things such as forgotten signatures, wrong names on checks, email bouncing from the AA's email.

If you're one of those artists, you're welcome to direct your complaints at us instead of posting it here where we're most unlikely to hear about it. We want AA to be successful and for the whole procedure to go smoother. There's no way for us to make improvements for the following year if we do not know what went wrong with the method chosen this year. Indeed, there are issues that should have been hashed out before even mentioning that registration was open, but they weren't. We dealt with it as they popped up. That's all we can do as human beings.

Anyway, that's all I have to say. You're welcome to reply to me if you want as I'm sure Jessica'd be glad to have more input on how to make AA better.

I'm a total outsider on this but it does look like there were some problems with your system. Sure, you're human, but if people are paying you then YOU have a responsibility to be accurate with your information and to not flippantly change your rules. For instance, in reading the thread about the fanfiction issue, it seemed that no one bothered to mention "no fanfiction allowed" to the people buying space in the alley before they paid. Also, it would seem that your con actually has a fanfiction contest and publishes a magazine of fanfiction and sells it, so banning fanfiction in Artist Alley makes no sense.

So, despite this wanna-be wank, there are some issues you and the others in charge should fix for next year.

We're highly aware of the fanfiction issue. Actually, it was something that came up at the exec meeting -after- the registrations were opened, so we couldn't mention it anytime before.

I personally have no excuse or explanation for it aside from what I've just mentioned since I'm unable to make it to those meetings in the first place. So all I can do is nod and make a note about it for us to fix for next year.

Why, no. I just think that wanking isn't going to be productive. Customer feedback is required to make things work better for businesses, right? Thus, the same should be applied in this case.

Productive?

I mean, do as you see fit, but it's a bit like lecturing Hugh Heffner on the evils of objectifying women while wearing a bikini.

Of course it isn't; if it was, it wouldn't be wank. Presumably, everyone who cared to provide you with customer feedback has done so; this is the forum for those who don't actually care to come and point and laugh a bit.

It's just that... isn't wank reporting usually done while the news is still fresh? This is kinda old by now. There's not much amusement to be derived out of it.

From the wiki:

Scotch posted Cassie Claire grudgewank, and was known for adding vitriol to any wank featuring Cassie Claire. He was banned from Fandom Wank, however, when it was discovered his IP address matched that of an anonymouse who had made racist comments.

Before we carpooled to Anime North in 2004, I specifically asked what papers I would need to cross into Canada as an Alley vendor. The alley head they told me I didn't need anything, that I should just cross with the usual paperwork.

Would there be any fees or business licensing required for an American seller? No fees, they assured me.

Imagine my surprise when, after a 7 hour drive, we found ourselves detained at the border. Our car and materials were searched thoroughly, making a mess. Agents took away our IDs to run checks on us, and told us that we would probably have to return to the States. We were unable to reach the Alley head over the telephone to ask whether this was routine, since the guards had no idea know what the hell an Artist Alley WAS.

After about three hours of phone tag and lectures, we were charged $150 per person for a Canadian business permit for the weekend, including the driver (who wasn't even a seller). They told us that if he did not pay, he had to turn back to the States. Luckily, we had access to a credit card, and we chose to pay the fee and fill out the paperwork.

I normally accept incompetence as a normal part of Alley registration, but this time it cost us more money by far than we took in, and made us late for the convention besides. Everyone was in a foul mood the rest of the weekend.

We are probably not going back to Anime North again. Canada kicks ass, but the stress just tainted everything.

Ano... did you announce yourselves as a business instead of tourists? Isn't it common knowledge that businesses would need to get a business license?

I had never crossed the border before or operated a business, so I wrote the alley head specifically to ask what status an alley tableholder would have (business or private) when crossing the border.

The alley head insisted, on two separate occasions, that I would *not* be considered a business when crossing the border as it was "just an alley table" or somesuch. These days I don't believe a word an Alley head tells me, but it was my second weekend doing the job.

"Common knowledge" doesn't kick in until you know what the hell you're doing, which is a hard state to attain when the people who are supposed to be in charge screw with you.
