[info]lukadia posts about the media cropping the heads from pictures of large people. Of course, there is wank thanks to [info]a1icey who just has to remind everyone that they have a "Personal responsibility to improve their appearance!" and that most people are thin in New York. Nice.

Weirdly, my old Abnormal Psych prof would agree with the body type comment. Uh, sort of. He cited a study from not too long ago (unfortunately I never took notes, so no real citation from me) about how the prevalence of eating disorders in model was extremely low in A-list models, and very high in every other class of model. And, yeah, a lot of eating disorder behavior like exercise-purging (staple of every celeb's life) get overlooked because they don't actually interfere with the model's day to day life. But I do think it makes a certain amount of sense that this ideal is naturally existing and that the people in charge of modeling contracts can somehow tell the difference enough to elevate those who don't make themselves sick to look like models above the others.

Of course, like all psych professors, he was batshit insane. Entertainingly so.

look, i dont have any ability to back it up because it is fact! based in our human instincts and basic knowledge. i am not smart enough to defend myself against people who obviously spend a lot of time thinking about ways in which obesity can be considered ok.

A search for anorexia turns up two things: manipped "thinspiration" images and headless stock shock images. The latter is just like the obesity set of images. So my first impression of that original post is Bitch, Please. You're NOT being persecuted.

My impression from using images of people in that way is not to dehumanize them, but actually show that this could be anyone. Here's what it looks like. It doesn't matter who it is, it's a problem.

Not that all those images that the OP posted were horribly obese, but some of them were. And yes, those people have some sort of health issue. Whether it be a hypoactive thyroid or an eating disorder. And I don't think a picture of poor health should ever be regarded as positive.

(You don't have to be stick thin to look healthy...in fact, many stick thin people don't look healthy. But one shouldn't gloss over obesity being a huge health problem just because OMG mentioning weight/diet offends people, either.)
