Soap drama (of the non-opera kind)
It was only a matter of time before we heard from thebitingfaery again, I suppose.

[info]shadowkate posts a rather amusing entry in [info]mock_the_stupid. All is good and fine and [info]cinnamonbite comments to share her amusement and impart some interesting info on how real soap is made:

I hear about that all the time, LOL! Soap makers with their samples at fairs and people eat the damn samples.
Just for reference, don't be fooled by the natural ingredients ploy. We say that because legally, soap, according to the FDA, can only be made from alkali and fats (those things in the grocery stores are DETERGENT bars and not allowed to call themselves soap. Look at the label. Beauty bars, bath bars, but not soap). So since soap, real soap, IS made from more or less natural ingredients (not organic, there's no such thing as a lye tree so no soap is organic. Don't EVER be tricked by that) we say it's natural.
But unless the scent is made from essential oils, none of the scents are natural at all. We all get them from the same places online. They're fragrance oils, not essential oils.
And you might want to check their colors too. Some people splurge and use the micas and others use melted Crayola crayons so don't get too carried away with the word, "natural."

thebitingfaery interjects (and seems to have not fully read the comment she had just replied to): Not all soaps are made from lye.

[info]mslaynie begs to differ: Actually, yes. To be soap, a fat and lye are combined, and through the process of saponification, soap is created.

thebitingfaery keeps missing the point

Finally, [info]dindin makes a comment summarizing the drama quite nicely.

Rather small, yet rather tasty (quite unlike soap . . .)

Well, thebitingfaery did have one at least semi-defensible point -- regarding organicness -- but it was buried in the wankpile.

So, um, Ivory Soap isn't really soap?

I thought they called them Beauty Bars and such because the perception of soap is that it dries the skin.

I think Ivory is actually soap or they wouldn't be alowed to label it as such.

They're called beauty bars because of the different amounts of soap (and other additives) that are in them. *is a soapmaker*

These people need to stop getting on thebitingfaery's case. She clearly knows exactly what she's talking about when it comes to soap. For goodness sakes, she was almost a soap maker!

What kills me is when Her Biting Fairyness says this:

Of course, because you are one of those who must be right and must always know what the other person was thinking, even when the other person blatantly tells you that you were wrong in your assumption. When that happens, you shut up and bow out, because there's really not much else for you to say.

...because the first sentence describes her perfectly and the second sentence describes what she seems constitutionally incapable of doing.

Also, I reserve a certain amount of dislike for anyone who has more than one non-self-deprecating picture of themselves in their icons.

I love her proof! The quote she used was tucked between "You cannot make soap without lye" and "If you purchase soap and you are told it is NOT made with lye, then it is NOT soap."

She's using the extra-strength Logic Repellant, isn't she?

As a long time soapmaker, I'd like to know what planet thebitingfaerie is from if soap isn't made with lye? ALL soaps are made with lye. It's a fact of life. Get over it.

And people eating the samples? WTF? Don't they know what goes in that stuff? We used to tell people they're good enough to eat, but DON'T EAT THEM. Cuz you know....chemicals and stuff? Essential oils/natural additives are not edible, people. Natural yes, edible, hell no.
