Racism in the romance novel industry?
Racism wank among published romance novelists? Apparently, it's out there.

Millenia Black was told to make the characters of her second novel black because she herself is African-American by her publishers. Many people, including Karen Scott are suitably outraged. But, as all such topics do, the wank follows when Shawn weighs in, both on her own blog and in the comments of Karen's entry by comparing Ms. Black's situation to slavery and then demanding to know why people aren't commenting like they should on these posts.

It's a lot of spooge, some of it TLDR, and so should be fun for the whole family.

Not a one. No black people. No "black culture". Nobody eating chitlins or sucking watermelons.

She had me until she said that. Fuck her.

I'm confused. That seems to be more "FUCK YOU if I'm including a black stereotype, since that's what you apparently want."

Like that scene in that one movie where the director tells the black actor to "act blacker"?

Um... she graduated from college when she was 19. She had a doctorate and was a Stanford professor when she was 26. By the time she was 34, she was the top White House advisor on Soviet affairs, and when she was 39 she was made provost of Stanford.

It's one thing to disagree with her views and her policies, but she's definitely not stupid. Why would you say something like that?

Dunno from her situation, but I've heard that in romance lit, the publisher will often trademark your name or pen name, so if you leave, you have to start over with a new pen name while the publisher hires some hack to keep your fan base by writing under your old name.

If that's her scenario, I can see feeling that if she leaves the publisher might hire someone who will handle the race thing worse.

I've heard this kind of fatuous crap from publishers before. I was once told by a literary agent to 'write more female characters' because whoa...what are these things on my chest? Oh, I'm a woman? So this means I am only able to stretch my feeble little girly brain into the mindset of another little feeble girly brain?

Do male authors get this shit, I wonder? You know - it might seem weird, but I could always imagine what it would be like to be a man - maybe even a black man. Just as this author could imagine what it's like to be a white man when she's a black woman. It's that thing called imagination. I'm told writers are encouraged to use it. *eyeroll*

I'm sorry - that was a tad wanky of me, wasn't it? Should I clean up?

Dude, the comments on MB's post are just...mindboggling. It's a stupid, racist situation that the editors have created, but the calls to SUE are nuts. Especially this: We know money motivates the publishers, but only the courts can decide if such uses of race are legal. Wuh-huh?

I hate to be misquoted.

I said was no one was commenting with the same ferocity as they did when the question of possible racism on the part of RWA was brought up. And as far as slavery goes, I said the situation LIKE SLAVERY, was motivated by money.

"Let's get real! The underlying issue with the publisher isn't race.
IT'S MONEY.
They don't want to miss out on the African American market. But does that make it right?
Slavery originally was not about race. It too was about MONEY."
