Ben & Jerry's Wank. No. Really.
No. Really really.

So. Ben & Jerry's introduces a new flavor. Mmm, says I, clearly misguided and/or naive and thinking it had to do with the drink, or merely the colors.

Seems like the name offends some Irish. At least the junk-food afficianadoes.

Highlights:

I have written to Ben & Jerry's that the unfortunate name of Black and Tans reminds Irish immigrants of the Royal Irish Constabulary Reserve Force, which was used by the brutish British Empire to repress the Irish in their own land and was known as the Black and Tans

I can't believe that Ben and Jerry's would be so insensitive to call an ice cream such a name and to launch it as a celebration of Irishness ...it's an insult!

For St. Paddy's sake, man, go out and get yourself some rocky road! Oh, wait...that might offend someone who immigrated from somewhere where the roads ARE rocky...*eye roll*

I hear they chop up little Irish kids and put them in the ice cream.

I'm Irish (i.e. I was born there- I'm not second or third generation as many others who claim to be irish are). I'm currently living in the US. "black and tan" as a drink is not normally served in Ireland. I find both the drink and the ice cream being named 'black and tan' very insulting and insensitive. My granduncle was killed by the black and tans.

There's an apology. But the wank keeps going, 157 comments on a blog that seems to garner about 3 at most, and mostly whining about how the PC police are ruining our fun, damnit.

OT but wow that wikipedia icon needs serious editing. I don't know whether it's typos or actual grammatical errors, but it's really rough in spots.

Would they call it "Modestly Proposed Ice Cream" then?

Mmm, says I, clearly misguided and/or naive and thinking it had to do with the drink, or merely the colors.

Ben and Jerry named it after the drink, and the drink was named after the uniforms. But this 5-th Generation Irish woman would like to point out that one of the more popular beverages in New Orleans is called "the hurricane," and there's been no fuss about that, so she would like to ask her wankier brothers and sisters of Erin to stop acting the maggot.

I know Ben and Jerry didn't intentionally pick out an offensive name, but man... naming your ice cream after fellows who are most infamous for opening fire on an unarmed crowd? possibly not a good idea

unless you're specializing in offensivly named ice cream, in which case go right ahead. and if you do, come up with some other good flavours. Like "Trail of Marshmallow Tears" and "Cherry Chernobyl"

You know, there was an ice cream parlor near where I grew up that had a sundae called a Black and Tan. Somehow I don't think they named it that because they were trying to oppress the Irish. o_O

Honestly, most people in the United States would not associate Black & Tan with anything other than the drink. Ben & Jerry's also put out the Dublin Mudslide not too long ago. And if you'd really like a reason to protest - car bombs are immensely popular and not as far removed from the image of the IRA. (They're also very, very good, and the only context in which I can stomach Bailey's.)

The great thing about Irish-American culture is that we don't have to have the same indignations and feeling of history as the Irish folk; we've evolved, as many Irish love to point out as a way of de-legitimizing our opinions and heritage, a separate culture in its own right. The expats who've realized that Irish-Americanism is different from Irish heritage have a much calmer time of it here than those who insist on our political fealty only when it suits them and all other times denigrate us for not being born in the Emerald Isle. Whatever the faults of people who say they're Irish, at least I don't have a shillelagh up my ass about who "gets" to wear Guinness t-shirts and eat stout ice cream. (Which rocks.)

A Black and Tan is Killian's and Guiness. I've never heard of any other kind, and it's a possibility that the people at Ben and Jerry's haven't either.

But then when people complain about Crows and Kaffir Limes they're just being oversensitive.

As a response to the bitching, Ben & Jerry's should make an ice cream called "Potato Surprise." The surprise is that when you open the lid, the carton is empty.

To atone, they should come out with "Irish Potato Famine" ice cream. It would, of course, be fat-free. And, indeed, calorie-free.

No? "IRAspberry" perhaps? "Angela's Ashcream?" "Pieces o' Protestant?"

I was going to point out that the British (cheesy) holiday firm Butlins call their irritatingly good humoured reps "Redcoats" which I would have thought would be even more offensive. However it then occurred to me that Butlins hasn't really managed to export itself much yet and is still a 'British thing'.

....Jesus. Okay, guessing that one's never going to be sold over here. (I'm Northern Irish: my grandfather was *in* the Black and Tans, my housemate's grandparents were burnt out of their house by them. Hurrah for cross-community relations.)

The whole thing that cracks me up about it is that a) Black and Tan is definitely sold in Ireland. I take great pleasure in making my English husband order it for me when I go back home; and b) it's not named for *those* Black and Tans! It's named for a bloody pack of hounds!

A little tackt goes along way, are you telling me if Ben & Jeerys launched a new Ice Cream called September 11th not one American person would be offended.

I was going to say that the situations were rather different, considering that "black and tan" is older than the militia, but then I went, "Hey! September 11th is my birthday! I want an ice cream for my birthday!"

Ooh, she'd better not go barhopping in Boston, then. Every third drinker would mortally offend her with their order.

I love how Godwin's Law was invoked. "What's Next, Nuts n' Nazis?"

Nazis are crunchy.

First of all, the idea of Ben&Jerry's failing at PC is so amusing that it makes up for the dog puking a dead mouse on the rug after coming in the house at 1:30am.

Second, In light of the Black and Tan incident, Ben and Jerry's has decided to come up with a new ice cream name for a upcoming release.
The new flavor is called:
'Short-penised-freckled-pasty bastard'
The management sincerely hopes that no one is offended by the new name.
Thank you.
is possibly the funniest thing I've read in weeks.

I'm probably the only one here who has never heard of the drink, but sadly enough, looked longingly at a half pint of the ice cream in the store last week. Woe. That was probably my only chance to have some and I missed it.

I'm not Irish, I'm Scottish and German. I'll refrain from comment until they come up with an ice cream flavor called "Nazi Sheep Shagger". Then I'll only bitch if it's got pistachios and/or marshmellow in it.
