More sexism wank! Yay!

Over on mock_the_stupid, [info]pride_of_erin makes a post about her sister accidentally running off the road while leaning to drive.  In the comments, people start discussing automatic vesus manual transmission, and [info]insanefreeek (with his scary icon) makes this post:  http://community.livejournal.com/mock_the_stupid/2234525.html?thread=56240029#t56240029

insanefreeek: I think we've basically all switched to auto in the U.S. because of the people we post about in this community. Most Americans are damned retarded and can't pay attention to anything but talking on their cell phones.

As for the military switching, I think that's smart since it is harder to concentrate on gears and shifting while you are in battle and having bullets buzz around you.

A man that doesnt know how to drive stick, pump gas or change a tire isnt a man at all. Or a person. How does a person NOT know how to pump gas?

...I can't remember the last time I saw a car that even had shift. I wouldn't know how to drive shift because of the fact that, you know, I've never even ridden in a car that was.

I drive a stick. All my cars have been sticks. I can change a tire. I can pump my own gas too. I can also refill the washer fluid and check the radiator.

How does a person NOT know how to pump gas?

They grew up in the State of Oregon, where it is illegal (no, srsly) to pump your own gas. First time I had to do it myself I had no fucking clue what to do.

I was under the impression that the US was mostly automatic because driving that way doesn't involve things like rolling backwards down hills. Plus, when we rented a car in Dublin, it turned out to be a stick, and my mum hadn't driven one in twenty years - and she had never seen a roundabout. So for the rest of us it was like an exciting, possibly deadly adventure, and for her it was all "Wheeee, this is just like my old Mustang! :) Oh noes I can't get off the circle! :(" Thus, I think the Atlantic divide between sticks and autos is a Very Good Thing.

In any case, I can definitely pump my own gas, and I can change a tire if need be. So I guess that's why I'm a lesbian; it's two-thirds of the way to being a man!

Semi-related: I got a new car a couple of months ago. I wanted a manual, but there wasn't a single manual on the lot, and if I had wanted to get a manual in the car I wanted - not just any old car, I would have had to sacrifice a virgin to Honda.

I learned to drive on a stick, a little neon sport coupe that serve me faithfully for many years until the AC died constantly while I live in Houston. Went shopping for a new car, one that I looked at was a 2002 pt cruiser and it was stick. The salesman didn't believe me when I said I drove stick until we were actually doing the test drive.

Didn't buy from him.

Yeesh. My paternal grandfather insisted all us girls know how to change a tire, check the fluids, refill everything except the oil, change spark plugs and the wiper blades so we 'won't get screwed out of good money by those thieving mechanics'.

I'm kinda amused at how low whathisname's standards are for being a REAL MAN(tm).

I mean, driving a shift, putting petrol in your car and changing a tire are all fairly simple things. I can do them and I'm about as far from a REAL MAN (tm) as you can get (no penis, I scream at spiders and worms and hold a hammer too near the head) and I can do all of the above.

I'm pretty sure most any fairly sentient human being could do them. I'm pretty sure a chimpanzee could do it with a bit of training.

(nb. to people who are American, don't drive or grew up in Illinois - admit it. You could figure it out if a Horde of Zombies were chasing you.)

Most cars over here (Netherlands) are stick anyway, so we tend to have the whole 'automatic is for pussies' attitude towards automatic.

Although they are DAMN handy, I'll admit that. Especially in racing games.
