cf_hardcore is at it again
It started out on a typical day. The birds were singing, it was a happy fluffy day. Someone posts this post in customers_suck about an unattended minin human running around unsupervised in their game store. Of course cf_hardcore finds out, as it is prime fodder for the masses. And general wank and wackiness ensues on calling the OP out on not doing the human thing and grabbing the kid to see where the parents were, etc.

Whacky AND Wanky

Okay, people always say things like this like it's common wisdom:

Simple answer: ANYONE involved in laying a hand on a kid these days could easily be sued or charged with abuse of some kind. I make it a policy to never place a hand on anyone's child. Doesn't matter what the intentions are, people go crazy over that kind of thing. Had I seen it, I would have just gone right to calling the police and letting them know the kid was running around; but actually try to control it? Never.

But has anyone actually heard of a specific incident of someone stopping a kid from running out in traffic and getting sued for abuse, much less actually winning? I mean, it just sounds so much like this general "OMG!1! People are suing McDonald's for burning themselves with coffee all the time! Stooooopid Americans!1!11" that's so prevalent and uninformed that I have a hard time taking it seriously without some kind of corroborating evidence. (I could be totally wrong, in which case I apologize to all the people who have been sued for letting kids run out in traffic).

So, in that vein, I think the OP is a jerk. Sometimes kids run away; maybe the parent messed up, maybe it was one of those things nobody can control - either way, a 2-year-old who doesn't know any better shouldn't suffer, and it's not exactly like it takes more than a minute of your time to restrain the child and make an announcement (And maybe this is just me, but playing with children trumps actually working any day of the week).

I don't want to touch the kid, because 1) I don't like kids and 2) it's possibly a liability issue, if he decides to tumble into one of our many shelves and wire racks.

So...shouldn't that last part be motivation to get the kid the fuck out of there?

And hey, it's everybody's "favorite" gay furry CFer, tigerwolf, in the comments. Describes a kid running into traffic as "Darwinism at work," and that he wouldn't stop it. Lovely fellow.

I will, never, ever understand this "not my kid, not my responsibility, so therefore I will do NOTHING other than bitch about it" attitude. I suppose it's just another manifestation of "MemememememeME!". I also love the "lost child = neglectful moo" thing. Yes, because no child is capable of ever getting away from a good parent, because good parenting means never actually detaching the child from your womb. WTF.

Even though the OP's attitude irritates me, it's the manager that pisses me off. How irresponsible can you be to just *let* that kid go? It's not your kid, yes, but for goodness sakes, in the self of self-preservation, I would have made sure to at least get security up there to avoid being responsible for possible incidents.

I really wonder about the mentality of someone whose first thought on seeing a lost child is to worry about being sued, rather than the child's welfare. I'd never physically touch a lost child unless it was absolutely necessary, but that's because I'd be worried about frightening them if I did. I couldn't just walk off and leave them to it--I'd worry too much. Also, even if the parent is irresponsible (as opposed to just, you know, human), shouldn't that be more of a reason to worry about the child, not less? It's not the kid's fault.

But then, people like tigerwolf seem to think compassion is some sort of character defect.

Something no one had brought up when I first looked at that wank: OMG, the kid was not even two years old! How could anyone with a conscience let what is basically a baby wander around? If a little nine-month-old was crawling around, would the OP have left that kid alone? I just cannot even imagine being that callous, no matter the future repercussions, and I dare any manager of mine not to back me up in such an event.

Tigerwolf: What happens when C_S and CF mate, then do lots of crack.

I would really love for once to just see a child-related C-S post not get ruined by masses of CF hatred. I mean, I'm not the best with kids, but it's not the kid's fault their parent is irresponsible and they, at four, really won't know any better.

*Is it just me or does the timing in that story sound like absolute BS pandering to a cf audience? I can see an adult taking a few minutes to search for their just missing kid, but twenty is just stretching it, especially for a two year old.

I work at a comic store, in a mall with two food marts and some electronic stores. So, really, we get parents leaving their kids at the store all the time. But you know what? Kids can actually be handled. Give 'em a kid comic/small and shitty toy, sit them in the middle where they can be seen and they're quiet for however long their folks are gone. If they get out of hand, tell them next time they get kicked out. I have never, ever had to speak twice to a kid - for the most part they listen the first time. Maybe it's because I use a serious business tone, not a 'OMFG KID Y CANT U BE LIKE MY DOG' voice. Or maybe it's because we're in Canada. I've seen the best and the worst of kids and I've managed to control ALL of them.
Teens, on the other hand, are bigger than me, bitchier than toddlers and sit for three hours in the fucking manga section, ruining the book spines while not. buying. a. fucking. thing.

Also, in a small corner of my soul, I want a horrific hate crime to happen to tigerwolf and no one stops to help because hey, it's not their fucking problem.

I don't know if it's simply that I grew up in Italy and only just moved to the US, but the "NOT MY PROBLEM LALALALA!" grates my nerves. Children might not be your responsibility, but I thought people cared about whether or not a small child got mowed down by traffic while they were watching.
