Over on [info]christianity, somebody posts an article by Doug Giles entitled "A Christian Can Be a Christian or a Liberal, But He Can’t Be Both."

And as if the article wasn't messy masturbatory act of stupidity itself...we're off!

Highlights include:

The reason why politics and religion cannot be separated.

OMGOSH ______________ ARE EVIL.

Jesus was a socialist!

Meanwhile, [info]merny25 and [info]swisscelt win the internets.

Don't get me wrong - there's some excellent discussion in there, but no post of that nature can be completely without it's wankiness, surprisingly restricted as this was.

Political left + religious generally does well with advocating for social justice and charity for the poor. They fall short on a few more of the laws in Leviticus and so on.

...how is that a problem? I always thought there was something in there about Jesus and saying Christians didn't have to follow Leviticus, which is why they, you know, don't have to keep kosher.

Also, Jesus was a hippie.

What do you mean "borderline wanky?" If the author had put it in 32-point font in a scrolling marquee and sparkles popping to the tune of "Wanky Days are Here Again," that wouldn't a a jot to the basic wankiness of it.

You know what always amuses me when something like this comes up? I grew up in a very conservative Christian area where we had to learn the catechism by heart at school and only sung hymns in music class, but nevertheless the major political parties in the area would be labelled left-leaning by American standards. because all Europeans are commies

Of course, my very concervative Christian hometown is also famous for gay cowboys, so we are all ungodly degenerates in that sense too.

From the comments on the original article:

Gotta draw that line. Set boundaries. Sometimes - boundaries are set with tire irons, or Daisy Cutters.

I obviously missed that bit of the Bible where Jesus spoke onto the masses and told them that lo, in his name they should smite their enemies with a tire iron.

A vote for a liberal is a vote to see Christians continue to receive special ridicule and be flogged more than a piñata during a Cinco de Mayo festival.

From the original article, and slighlty OT... but ... OMG. Really?

I mean... seriously. Where the fuck is this information coming from? Aren't most liberals (in whatever sense) in the USA basically "live and let live"? I mean, there are anti-Christian groups along with the anti-children and anti-Semitic and anti-non-white... but do liberals in general actually subscribe to these beliefs?

of course, i might actually enjoy the flogging, but that's beside the point, innit? t :p

In addition to liberalism's obvious and odious pro-holocaust-like abortion stance, its anti-biblical view of marriage, its scripture-slamming aggressive secularism, and its feckless view of our nation's defense, liberalism completely clashes with the Christian worldview.

Anyone who uses "secularism" as an insult hurts my brain.

Decreasing taxes for wealthy investing businessmen increases the amount of money they are willing to invest back into the economy, resulting in an overall increase in the economy's health...

Agggh Hulk!Smash! Trickle down economics didn't really work for HAMILTON, it didn't work for Reagan and, guess what, it STILL doesn't work folks. How many times do we have to prove this before people stop using this cracked out economic logic as a reason to cut taxes to the people who need the money the least.

Republicans have significantly greater respect for private rights, as the only issue they are willing to compromise on this is on matters of national security.

Right, because clearly the Republicans are supporting my private, individual right to get an abortion if I see fit and marry my girlfriend.

[info]fanha is so fucking wanky it makes me want to spork myself in the eye.

Oh, Doug Giles. I've met and corresponded with Doug Giles several times. He is of the same denomination as me and we live, hmm, maybe 8 minutes away from each other, so, yeah, run into him in church circles and occasionally correspond on TownHall with him. For some reason, his Internet Persona is all blustery wanky and obnoxious, but IRL he is so warm and funny, it's really tragic it doesn't translate at all.

Anyhow, past that, one of the things about which I have consistently been critical about Doug's writing is that he lives in a very Cuban part of Miami, as do I, and IIRC his wife is a dark-complexioned Cuban woman, and he writes as a white guy whose multiracial sensibilities have been informed, and made overconfident, by having been a citizen of that rare thing - a minority community in which the vast majority of citizens are politically conservative and often religious. Cuban-Americans are, after all, the only Hispanic voting block that is overwhelmingly Republican. I think once you know this, you can understand why Doug Giles THINKS he's got a firm grasp of the big picture, but really only has grabbed the issue by the tiny, tiny corner, because his writing seems completely oblivious to the fact that in most churched minority communities, the majority of people agree on matters of social policy with the GOP but still feel disenfranchised enough to not vote GOP. That's not to say that the majority of Christian liberals are racial/ethnic minorities, but the other way around - if you are a racial or ethnic minority and faith is important to you, you are statistically likely to be a Democrat. Maybe if the apparent majority of white Republican writers would stop acting like Christian Democrats of color did not exist, more minority Christians would feel more welcome in the party that more closely reflects its values and ideals. *shrug* Not my party, not my problem, but that's how it is.
