Current mood:*sporfle!*

Ahh, the blind and the stupid... great subjects for wank
I feel the need to point out that I am totally blind, and therefore have no qualms about pointing and laughing at people who share my disability.

A while back, someone created a Yahoo group called blind tards which has the following description:
"Welcome to the Blind Tards yahoo group.
Have you ever had to deal with a stupid blind person? Someone so stupid they deserve
to be on your better off dead list?
Have you seen someone who has the social grace of a pet rock, the brains of a giant
sea turtle, and the common sense of a sunbather in the antarctic?
Well, here's the place to tell the world. We would encourage you to change names
where appropriate, but if you don't, then we're not responsible for any
backlash.
We don't give a rat's a$$ if you like or dislike this list. If you don't like it,
then don't subscribe.
Bitching about the subject matter of this list will just get you kicked off, and
then we'll talk about you without
mercy. And just imagine that email. Hey, I got kicked off the blind tards mailing
list. What will people think?
The only requirement here is that we have to stay on topic. We're not going to be
socially conscious, or discuss the merits of one issue or another.
We're here to talk about blind people being idiots. Surely there are plenty of examples."

And because these things always work, Daisydacia on LJ posts a message about the list to the blindpeople community on LJ in which she is outraged. Apparently, she or other similarly outraged people have posted to other blindness-related fora about this list, thus, of course, bringing more attention to the group. There is a small bit of wank in the comments, but it's fairly mild.

Naturally, of course, there is a follow-up post from kl1964 on LJ:
"A quick look at the blind_tards Yahoogroup page, specifically the message history,
confirms something I had already suspected. This is not a new list. It was created
sometime last year. Between the list's creation and last Thursday, there was a grand
total of one message posted to the list. Between Thursday and now, there have been
eighty. The page also indicates there are 18 new members, although it doesn't indicate
since when. There is no advertising like free advertising, and these boneheads got
it in spades. Clearly, either they hadn't bothered to do any promotion of their precious
list, or they didn't have the cojones to do it. Frankly, I suspect the latter. The
job was done quite nicely for them. I still think it will flame out rather quickly,
once the novelty wears off. I don't think it's worth sending demands to Yahoo that
the list be shut down, as some have suggested. First of all, repulsive as the matter
is, I think it would set a bad precedent, and besides Yahoo wouldn't do it anyway.
Let's just let these folks crawl back under their rock. As I see it, the best defense
is ignorance."

There is more self-righteous outrage in these comments, from I've heard rumors the person who owns this list is blind! to I work with developmentally disabled people and I get very upset when people bash
that population.
.

Of course, I ignored the edicts not to feed the trolls and went looking at the list's archives, which is where the spooge flies thick and fast.

We have a message from the list owner, who is an obvious troll, forwarding some of the hatemail s/h/it has received recently. S/h/it also confirms that s/h/it is, in fact, blind. Someone even brings in the KKK.

Thankfully, there will always be people, in these sorts of situations, to sit back and laugh at everyone involved.

There's a lot more, and I'll be glad to add highlights as they arise, because the wank seems to be going strong on the list itself.

Edited to fix HTML mistakes.

I know it's possible - on GAFF, one of our better-known old school posters was blind.

It's definitely possible -- but sometimes difficult. (You wouldn't believe some of the arguments I've gotten into over nonstandard uses of HTML -- apparently, some speech synthesizers don't get along well with some common HTML tags.)

As for the blind GAFFer... anyone I know?

(I'm Loki's sock-puppet, if you didn't already know.)

The Internet: The best thing that ever happened to the metaphysical 'Get Out of Jail Free Because I Share Your Suffering' Card.

Now let's wait for the 'Tards Tards' community and the inevitable: "It's okay that I created it...because I'm also stupid as fuck."

Talking about people is indeed the ultimate instrument of pain. Remember when you were a kid and your parents taught you to use your words to solve problems? They were actually training you to be a vicious torture-monger with no soul.

I don't know what software the blind use, but with NaturallySpeaking I find it much easier to say "I'm not sure how you drew that conclusion," than to say "all caps on oscar space no space on romeo lima yankee" -- in other words "O RLY". In other words, being gimpy has improved my prose no end.

Dude, I have got to find someone blind to get chummy with. Looking at this stuff makes me really want to just watch a blind person surf the internet for a couple of hours. They always have those shows on the Learning Channel about how seeing eye dogs can be trained to cook a three-course meal, but they never show you the good stuff like going online. :(

LOL! Well, feel free to come over anytime, because I'm great at surfing the Internet. :-P The main thing is that I use a screenreading device, and I don't have any use for a mouse.

It's actually pretty interesting. My family socializes puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and we had a dog graduate as a full guide last month. We send e-mails back and forth to her new owner (who is legally blind but not like... can't-see-anything-but-black blind, most legally blind people aren't actually pitch-black blind) and I think she uses a screenreader and stuff like that. It's really awesome how technology's improved to make stuff like that possible.

Next, my thoughts on yaoi!
