Yes. I need a hobby.
But it's exam time. I have nothing better to do that scurry around customers_suck collecting wank.

Like this pretty, where tortilla_factory admits that, when the english_majors and grammar_nazis collide, she'll side with the Nazis, since she's half-German, and veli wants to know what's so funny about genocide and how she's sick of being blamed for her grandfather's generation.

I was counting more on grammar_wank, since the OP was a rant on people saying "I'm doing good" when they mean "I'm doing well", and there is indeed a bit of angsting over that, but the paranoid German was way more interesting.

I don't particularly like the whole "I'm doing good" turn of phrase, but it doesn't necessarily bother me.

What bugs the daylights out of me, however, is how many people insist on saying "between you and I" - and now that I know being half-German allows me to act Nazi-esque, I don't feel bad for all the times I've pointed out how much I hate that.

There's a deleted post in there, too - I wonder how wanky it was.

My most recent favorite, due to one of my co-workers, is the use of "in lieu of" to mean "because of". She also uses "heptic" instead of "hectic" and writes "could of" instead of "could have".

I think I'd be able to forgive her for "heptic" if she were a famous rap star or something, but given that she is a fifty-year-old WASP with the mental prowess of half a brick, I'm veering toward no forgiveness in this case.

I work at a bookstore and people made signs and did your instead of you're. I wanted to beat them with the signs. Although, they were only cardboard, so it wouldn't have done much damage. I need to rethink my plan.

I work at a Payless Shoesource, and we recently had to put a hold on a freebie extra that was meant for kids because - get this - some of the (American) states were spelled correctly. Yes, that's right, a corporation as large as Payless actually manufactured millions of these things and sent them nationwide, only to recall them a week later because nobody proofread.

This drives me absolutely insane. I corrected an American friend (who manages fairly well with spelling, I won't bother with one who hasn't learned yet that "than" exists) when she used it in a poem, and she told me something like "I prefer it this way". Never mind that grammatically it makes no sense whatsoever.

PS: the "in lieu of" is just completely mind-boggling.

What really bugs me is the "I prefer it this way (therefore I have an inalienable right not to have it called bad grammar)" attitude. I tried going through a poem written by a friend for one of his classes -- and any time I made a suggestion the response was "that's just a matter of style, and this is my style." Within reason I can accept that kind of thing -- but this wasn't a matter of nuance, it was one of stilted, awkward, painfully inept choice of words and phrasing. I think it's a generational thing...it's only people who are at least a few years younger who seem to have quite that sense of grammatical and stylistic entitlement.

Sadly, ever since the first time I heard her do it, I've been noticing more and more people doing it elsewhere. It's like a virus!

I used to try to find ways to use it correctly in conversation with her, but at this point I think my time would be better spent attempting to teach proper grammar to my left shoe. At least my shoe has an excuse for being that stupid.

And you may think I'm being harsh, but just imagine the kind of mind it takes to make a mistake like that, and then multiply it by every sentence that comes out of its mouth and imagine it in a desk behind you making small talk all damn day. I try to be all zen about it, but it's hard!

Me too. It's like some kind of overcompensation thing with all kind of phrases. "If I always write "I" instead of "me", I'll sound smart!" Except when it's the object of a phrase and should rightly be "me" and then you just make my head hurt.

"Try and" instead of "try to" also drives me nuts but I can't seem to get anyone else on that particular bandwagon o' hate.

When I was in college I tried to explain that whole object of the preposition thing to the girls in my college. One of them told me "You're a math major, how would you know?"

I had to pull out the example "would you say between we or between us?" before anyone would take me seriously - and you're right. It's that belief that saying "I" for "me" is automatically correct regardless of context.

I NEVER use "try and" in written language. I'm fairly well-educated, but I do have a Southern (US) accent. Sometimes if I'm drawlin' along, so to speak, "I am going to try to go out" turns into "I'm'unna try'n go out." I'm sorry. It doesn't happen in formal conversation, I swear!

Eh, "try and" doesn't bother me too much. Maybe because I hear it so often I'll occasionally wind up doing it.

The one that really gets me is the whole "good/well" thing, especially when it's really, obvious not the correct word.
