Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
This one started several days ago, when someone on stupidpetowners snarked a post from note_to_cat. [info]squid_ink comments on getting the cat spayed soon. Someone else comments
"BABY! Whoa. AWESOME! Your cat can wait, because as soon as you have the money, even if it's in a few years, I know you will do it. You're a great mom!"
The mod, [info]fordarkness, responds. [info]squid_ink Thinks it's directed at her, and goes, basically "heffa did not!" The mod tries to correct her, but she keeps missing the point.

The wank is later posted on drama_awesome. [info]squid_ink proves that she's unable to read the top of the page. The mod begins losing her temper. [info]squid_ink continues to defend herself. (Hey, look, she activated that law about condescension!)

The members of stupid_free have been following the events through several f-locked posts, by fordarkness herself. The latest is not by her, but reveals that she's been posting all over the place. Such as ask_me_anything. And she still doesn't get it.

Please, no furbashing.

And wasn't mindiloohoo the one who used a sockpuppet to cause drama in a ferret community? If so, psychology... oh, my.

Cats can get sick from not being spayed/neutered? WTF? Have we forgotten about how cats are in, you know, the wild?

Cats that are in the wild mate. When a cat is not mated and allowed to go into heat on a regular basis, it can cause serious illnesses and diseases. That's the problem. It applies to dogs as well.

I think that it can increase their chance of getting certian types of infections and cancer, but it's not like letting a ferret go into heat.

As the above mousey said, cats go into heat indoors, not bred, increased chance of cancer. Outdoors, they get babies, less chance of cancer, more chance of death via childbirth.

I know, that makes no sense to me too. In fact that sounds, like, kind of bullshitty to me. Kind of like things that you would tell people to make them get their cat spayed when they are too stupid to understand why they should actually get their cat spayed.

So I looked it up, and unsurprisingly, as far as I can tell (and I might be greviously mistaken here), the diseases are reproductive problems, mostly cancers but also related to hormone fluctuations. So, it's not really that unspayed animals who don't have access to regular mates can get sick from not being spayed, it just cuts out the reproductive organs and source of hormones so they don't have those problems. It's hard to get uterine cancer if you don't have a uterus.

This still seems kind of scare tactic-y to me. "If you don't spay your cat it will DIE!"

(Pardon my dataspooge)

My kitty was in heat for a week and a half before the vet had an open booking for a spay (this is one of the vets that will cut on a cat in heat).

Vet tech later told me that she(Spooky, not the vet tech), had a uterine infection and they were lucky that she'd come in, because cats (unlike dogs) hardly ever show symptoms of uterine infections.

I flipped out for about 30 seconds (INFECTION?!?!? IS SHE OKAY?) and then just took the poor thing home.

But yeah. The point of that tl;dr was that kitties can get sick, and worse, you might not even know it. :

Ah, SPO. There's a reason why I never joined you, and it would all the wanky shit that hits the fan there sooo regularily. I'm actually reading through the indoor/vs. outdoor cat debate, and now feel the urge to slap a bitch on both sides. And that's saying something because I believe very strongly in indoor-only for cats.
