*stupid* petowners...
A post is made to [info]stupidpetowners about outdoor cats.

[info]sicpuppy, who doesn't even share a proximity of time or space with the OP, takes it as a personal attack.

Cue lots of wanking mature debating wanking about different ways people in the UK and US raise their pets.

[info]sicpuppy decides she's taking her toys home and leaving... FOREVAH! Not before she makes her dramatic final I'm Leaving Forever post, though. Wah wah wah.

People mock.

And she can't stop posting.

Personally, I'm annoyed. I don't recall joining the community [info]wankypetowners. Please to be shutting up now, all of you.

Let me guess; something about the comm members being judgemental, close-minded, and not understanding?
I come online this morning to find ANOTHER post trying to shove the 'dangers' of outdoor cats onto everyone, with lovely comments like 'it never fails to amaze me that people go on about how much they loooove their cat(s) but allow them to roam unchecked.'
Pretty much.

The more I read [info]stupidpetowners the more I become convince that it's full of the same sort of people it's there to point out.

Indoor/outdoor cat arguments make me want to bring up exactly what happens when we try to keep our indoor/outdoor cat inside.

Holy crap, that community is annoying.

(I'm kinda with the wanker about the inside/outside cat thing, though. No, children: indoor cats are not automatically immune from accident, injury and illness. No, outdoor cats are not going to get hit by a car the first time they try to cross the street. Most UK cats I know rarely even go further than their own back garden. Really. They're not going to get eaten.)

You might as well try to sell Zoloft at a Scientologists' convention.

I tried wading through the self righteous BS, and found a few folks that attempted to bring about the earth logic by pointing out a nice compromise between th two schools of thought on the matter. Sadly, they were ignored.

I think the reason so many are arguing with sicpuppy is because she words her responses to seem like she just opens the door and lets her cats wander, never knowing what they're doing. Which is a very stupid thing to do, regardless of how perfect an area you believe to live in. The owner is responsible for their pet(s) at all times. Isn't that the whole idea behhind having a pet? That you're taking care of another (albeit damnably cuter) life? If they can't be bothered to take note of what their pet is up to then they shouldn't have even bothered with getting one.

Wow. I didn't even realize this was an issue. I live in a very small town in upstate NY, and we have always let our cats go outside and do whatever. They never got physically sick or harmed, but they also always stayed on our property. Well, Willow did use to follow us if we took a walk, but other than that.

We did have two very, very odd cats, though.

I'm just here for the icon love. I'm not quite sure why Brandon Flowers with a pancake on his head has had me howling with laughter for the past few minutes, but hey, simple pleasures for - you know.

To me it's ridiculous that this is even a debate. My family has lived in the various suburbs of Chicago for the last century or so, and all of us have always had indoor/outdoor cats with little incident aside from the occasional bout of easily treatable fleas and one farm cat we brought home from my sister's stables who was incurably stupid and disappeared one day.

But then again, we have a history of taking in strays who have lived their whole lives outdoors and would be utterly miserable inside. Nevertheless, we are SO CRUEL, and my parents are SO EVIL not only for letting the cats do what they want, but also for letting myself and my siblings risk disease and other human beings by playing outside as children.

But seriously, are we the only family who looks at our cats less as precious widdle helpless baaaaybeeees and more as evil, cuddly roommates and overlords?

My family and I see nothing wrong with letting our Himalayan outside from time to time, but that's just because he's too fat, lazy, and cowardly to actually go very far beyond the back porch. (Also: he's a delicate flower of a feline who wouldn't want to get his feet dirty on the plebes' grass.)

I guess we fail at kitty parenting. >:

Ahh, I was waiting for this to end up here.

The only thing I have to say about the whole indoor/outdoor cat thing is this: I used to work at a wildlife rehabilitation center. I can't even begin to count how many animals we received that had been mauled by cats, or baby animals that had been orphaned because their mother was killed by a cat.

It's not all about the safety of the cats, you know.

One of my cats, who we adopted from an animal shelter, absolutely refuses to go outside. You can open the front door for her and she'll look outside, look at you, look outside, and go back to the comfort of the couch.

My friend once had a cat who was absolutely miserable if kept indoors, and would skulk around and yowl endlessly if she couldn't go outside.

Not all cats and situations are the same, people. Geez.

When I was nine years old, my family moved into a new house on a very large lot. The people who'd lived there before us had owned a lot of pets, including outdoor cats. One of the old females was pretty much feral, and they couldn't catch her when they moved out, so they left her and her one black week-old tomkitten.

I fed her. I adopted the kitten. I never totally tamed her, and she never could be caught for vet care or anything like that, but we had her quite awhile. A year after we moved in, she had a new litter of kittens. I kept one female and found good homes for the rest.

The mother cat, who we really just called Momma Cat, was about 8 years old or so, and died about 6 months later. The boy kitten I'd adopted was shot by a drunken neighbor at the age of 3.

The girl cat, however, who I named Jibby, continued to live with us as an outdoor cat. She got all her shots, and after a single litter (because we needed her to hunt, and queens that have had kittens are more aggresive hunters) we got her spayed. She lived on our back porch where she was born until she was 8, when we moved to a much smaller house in a subdivision.

I endured scratches so deep they left scars on my wrists in an effort to get her into a carrier and then into a car so we could take her with us. I cared for her for three days (reccomended by a veteranarian I consulted) when she wasn't allowed out of a rabbit cage we'd set up in the back yard- I fed her, kept her supplied with water, allowed her to walk around the tiny yard on a leash to get used to smells, cleaned her cage since she was not litterbox trained, and physically moved the entire cage every six hours for three days so that she would always be in a shady part of the yard and wouldn't overheat.

We've lived here a year now. In the back yard is a table, on which is a small rug, over which is propped an upside down wheelbarrow, which is where she sleeps. Her bowl is on the patio table, and she shares a water dish with our indoor-outdoor (but mostly indoor) cocker spaniel. She's 9 years old now, and considering that she hasn't even gotten in a single fight with a cat or a racoon since we moved, I'm pretty sure she's not going anywhere.

She's allowed in the house when she's not furiously shedding (longhaired cat) but after a while she wants out. She'll rarely stay inside for more than a few hours before she runs to the door. On the few occasions I've wrangled her to sleep on my bed for a night due to cold or particularly bad storms, she's always awake and scratching at the door at 3 AM.

Most of my pictures are in storage now, but I keep this photo of her in my wallet, right beside the pictures of my parents. She's only about two in that picture, so she's filled out a lot since then, but you get the idea.

Seeing so many feral/rescue cats with FIV and FeLV, I definitely agree that outdoor cats are more at risk for disease. That said, some cats just aren't happy living indoors, and let's not forget about High-Rise Syndrome.

We've got two cats, both of whom are allowed out in the day time if they like, and kept inside every night from sunset onwards. Since most killing-of-native-animals is done at night, this works out very well for all concerned. They adapted perfectly to the sleeping routine (both will sleep through the entire night), and they don't hassle to go outdoors after nightfall.

In two entire years, the best they've been able to do in the prey stakes are some lizards, some grasshoppers, two mice and one unfortunate rainbow lorakeet.

Cats are about the most fiercely independent, individual animals you can own. How can you possibly hope to make generalizations about how they MUST be cared for?

Okay, cats aren't supposed to be outside right? So... the four or five barn cats I had (only one wasn't spayed/neutered) who got regular twice yearly check ups with the vet (we'd just corral them and he'd check them over when he came out to check on the cows/horses, same with our dogs I <3'ed our vet), were up to date on their shots, never got worms, were on flea medications so they wouldn't be eaten alive by them, and had fresh water/food every day, who all lived long healthy happy lives were... mistreated?

Noooo. Does. Not. Compute.

We did have one get injured by a calf -- girl was lucky, glancing blow with a hind hoof, cracked a couple of ribs. Now, we tried to take her inside to take care of her, but she howled. Luckily, we had an enclosed porch. We put her out there with the windows open (and it was still chilled at night) and she was happy to be pampered and fussed over.

Tell me that cat didn't belong outside.

I have cats of all types. Outdoor from the last owners of this house (I'm in the country), strays that got abandoned that I take care of and try to find new homes for (right now I'm working on a cute little manx), indoor cats that enjoy their fresh air, and indoor cats that will slice your throat if you try and make them go out into the dirty place. I try to train the abandoned strays quickly, they have a bad habit of just... disappearing one day after I hear the neighbours go out drunk.

I've come away from this: Being an outdoor cat is all well and good, but sometimes a cat is completely retarded and can't be allowed out of eyesight in case they try to stick their tongue in a light socket or try to exchange addresses with a coyote.

So if you can prove your cat isn't a moron, I guess it's okay to let it outside.

If you'll excuse me, I need to go save my cat from electrocuting herself again. It's like having a toddler, but more likely to try and try and shove her head in my mouth while I sleep.

Stupidpetowners really is a haven of self-righteous arseholes. The last time I posted there, I got lambasted for having an indoor/outdoor DOG.

As in, a dog I let into my enclosed suburban grassy backyard every now and again.

Without OMG SUPERVISING HER.

I'm so mean. I'm lucky my dog hasn't been POISONED and/or STOLEN!1!!!!

FFS. These people really have nothing better to do than polish their own self esteem, a self-esteem based entirely around how neurotic they can be about their pets.

I could be super-wanky here and make a parallel between the indoor cat thing and the growing inclination of us USians for being completely bat-shittingly overprotective of everything we care for in recent decades. But I won't!
