Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
And today in Metaquotes...
The OP concerns a young woman's genius comeback to a couple guys in an elevator wondering aloud why she isn't smiling.

"Fitnesseccentric" takes exception to the comeback.

Except he might just be messing around.

Other people take offense.

It is smallish, but...

I'm sad to see a community dedicated to funny and/or witty things said on LiveJournal take itself so damned seriously.

Point, but OTOH Herr Troll? Was not funny. Just because one is not being serious, doesn't mean one is actually amusing.

You know, men sure seem a whole lot smarter when they remember not to talk.

Meanwhile, the guys in the elevator are thinking, "It's not just the men."

They're probably too busy thinking about how she must obviously be a man-hating lesbian because she didn't respond to their passive-aggressive bullshit in the way they hoped.

The next time some woman whines to a man who's in power (basically the story of women's rights)... we should just not bother talking about it, thus giving the background noise all the attention it deserves.

Yeah, women got their rights by whining until the benevolent men decided to grant them. I mean, who wants to vote, right? Quit whining you crazy dames!

sirena_lupin's reply pwned.

I'd forgotten how much shit still goes on until everyone shares their work stories.

There's an infamous Bill Hicks routine about this:

'So, I'm walking down the street, minding my own business, and someone pops out of nowhere and says "smile! You know it takes more energy to frown than it does to smile?" I said, "yeah, you know it takes more energy to point that out than it does to leave me the fuck alone?"'

My response to the "more muscles to frown than to smile" thing has always been, "So I'm exercising."

I always liked the Dilbert cartoon about that.

Dogbert: *walking along street with new tazer*
Guy: "Hey, little dog, smile! It only takes three muscles!"
Dogbert: *zaps him* "That took a few more muscles, but I think it was worth it."

Hmm.

In theory, it seems to have aspirations to being purely an information resource, and I never am opposed to that. Having sites around that have accurate depictions of the Nazi party, what they did, and how they did it, goes a long way towards denouncing the nut-bats that say that the Holocaust never happened in the first place.

On the other hand, in practice, it seems like it could very easily attract a number of people that aren't about "we are carefully studying what happened so we may learn from are mistakes" and are instead about "Goebbels turns me on!" I'd probably want to lurk a while and see which way they swung and how the mod handles that kind of situation before I judged one way or the other.

Oh, sure, be annoyed that a girl isn't pleased that some guy tells her to smile. What makes men think this is a compliment or a conversation starter? Seriously, if I got a cent for each time I went out and a guy told me to smile I'd be rich.

How about the damn men smile as well, huh? In fact, I'll be sure to tell some guy to smile next time I'm going out.

Amen. A guy told me to smile today today, and I wish I had answered like she did. Seriously, do I make comments about other people's facial expressions? No. Just as I don't whistle at them, nor try to touch them. Grrr.

I had a near-version of it years ago when my then-boss's boss flew in from NY, stopped at my desk and commented that I wasn't smiling.

"Yes," I replied. "I buried my aunt yesterday."

Poor guy was mortified. The whole situation actually made me start smiling later on because my aunt would have laughed herself silly over it.

Same applies for honking. It's not going to flatter us, it's just going to piss us off. Is there a reason horny losers can't ogle without honking? I probably wouldn't have a problem with getting leered at if I didn't know if it was going on (cos I'm obviously unaware), but the next time someone fucking honks at me, there will be tires getting slashed. RARGH! XP

My natural, neutral, expression (the one on display here) tends to lead to many "Why are you so frowned up" inquires.

None of which come from anyone who's spent more than five minutes around me and knows that's how I always look.

My usual response is to fire off the biggest, fakest, cheese-eating grin I can and say "Better, now?"

To their credit, most people take the hint from there.
