Current mood:*sporfle!*

Over in mock_the_stupid, [info]littlekatydid relates a funny story:

So... two of my classmates had an interesting adventure this week. We'll call them doornail and dirt - two things that are surely smarter than either of them.

Doornail has no driver liscence.
Dirt does.

So, Dirt takes Doornail to a parkinglot where they proceed to drive around until Doornail can follow commands fairly quickly and "has the hang of" this driving thing.

They then go out on the road where Doornail promptly drives off the road into the ditch.

This might be an appropriate place in the story to mention: Doornail is completely BLIND!

Comments for a while are your basic "whoa wtf lol." And then [info]jodied comes along.

It's exceedingly rare for someone to be COMPLETELY blind. Most people who are blind have at least some light perception, if not shape recognition.

[info]littlekatydid, instead of going the hi-not-the-point-but-thanks-for-playing route, replies, ...and light perception makes it less stupid to start driving exactly HOW?

Aaaaand they're off! I'd include highlights, but it's a pretty short wank - the major part of it is the argument between [info]littlekatydid and [info]jodied, though further down a couple others chime in and there are some struggles with basic math.

I'v seen him appologize to a wall for bumping into it, and last I checked if you could see a shape a wall and a person look nothing alike.

I've bumped into the coffee table and said "Sorry" as an automatic reflex.

Me too, and I have perfect vision. I also reflexively say "ow" if I drop something, even if it doesn't land on my foot or in any way hurt me. I'm speshul like that.

To be fair, I was four at the time, but during twilight hours at camp, I went running into the cabin at full tilt and whacked right into the door of one of the inner rooms. It was dark in there. My mother said I apologized, because I thought it was my brother.

That's when they figured out I have night blindness to the nth degree.

There are lenses to correct some forms of legal blindness now? How does that even work? Don't they call it legal blindness for a reason?

Colour me genuinely confused.

"Needs tests read to them and bumps into objects and people frequently because of their blindness" wouldn't have taken away from the story.

Except in that way where it totally would've ruined the flow of the punchline, of course.

Is she completely stupid or just legally stupid?

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

My brother is blind, as in, he can see light but damage to his optic nerves prevent him from seeing more than blurred shapes. Has the cane and the t-shirt.

And guess how much he would have given a fuck about how she described the stupid?

Please, don't defend the blind people. They can't see, it doesn't mean all of them are fucking idiots and they do NOT need help from one.

Hmm, I wonder if that little drive the OP mentioned was anything like the blind guy who drove the track in Top Gear once?

In this case, Blind Guy had driven before he became too blind and he had someone next to him saying where the turns were etc and the best thing? He wasn't the slowest person to complete the race track.

Best April Fool's joke ever:

One of my dad's friends attached the white canes to all four corners of a car and put big signs on the sides and back that read "Experimental Blind Driver - Please Be Respectful!" When the cops pulled him over, he was wearing huge black sunglasses.

Luckily, one of the cops knew him, and just about pissed himself laughing.
