If men could wank, it would be a sacrament. Or something.
Hey, looky-looky, an [info]otf_wank where everyone's of age!

It all starts here on Metaquotes where the oft-heard gripe about if men could menstruate is posted. Of course someone will complain about the repeated sentiment, but what starts it off is a complaint about the use of the word "exsanguinate," so you know the dictionary's involved. Then [info]scary_being_me bitches about feminazis, "exsanguinate" again, and why menstruation MUST be carried out every month.

Oh, and Gloria Steinem is dissed by the OP for wearing a miniskirt. The OP being 46 and therefore old enough to have remembered what second-wave feminism was there to do in the first place.

Small, sure to grow exsanguinate, enjoy!

Yeah, she seems to be taking it with a dash of the non-wanky; but the WTFness of that statement did not go unnoticed over there.

I'm interested to see that no one has brought up how, as women live longer, they have more periods, and thus are (apparently) more prone to breast cancer because the breasts (like the uterus and ovaries) prepare for pregnancy every month, and the more often they do their thing (yes, that's scientific speak right there), the more likely something is to go wrong.

Hm, I guess Biology 102 is useful after all.

Well, yes, but that doesn't correlate to "stopping periods with hormones will prevent cancer". Birth control pills don't mimic the effects of pregnancy and/or breastfeeding exactly (and thank God, or no one would take them), and it's at least theoretically possible that they could even make things worse. The only way to know for sure is by studies, and so far the results seem mixed.

And no one has pointed out since the pill stops ovulation, you greatly decrease your risk for ovarian cancer since the tissue doesn't have to recover from bursting open every month.

Also, I thought there was research going on using menopause-level hormones rather than pregnancy-hormones for birth control that decreased the breast cancer risk? Did anyone else see an article about that? I read in months ago and now I really want to see how that's going.

While due to age and smoking I'm not a good canidate for the Pill, I am on the Depo-Provera shot which is safer for me with the above concidered. Rather nice overall with just shuffling on in every three months for the shot in the buttcheek.

Did ask the doctor about longterm effects and according to her what spotting I'll have will eventually stop entirely as my body adjusts.

After going through years of nearly excessive heavy periods and not going to have any more kids, I'm rather looking forward to that.

Two questions: Has anyone else read the short story "Even the Queen" by Connie Willis? Ever since the "stopping menstruation" idea has come up in the news I've been wondering if anyone else is familiar with it.

And did anyone else have a problem with this bit:

If we women want *real* and effective attention paid to our health, we're going to have to go to med school to become Doctors and Researchers (not just Nurses - although nursing is a noble profession). And we're going to have to push for it.

If that boat has already sailed past for you ladies, and you have daughters, take an interest in their academic careers and steer them toward the sciences whenever possible.

I mean, it just leaves me saying stuff like, "What makes you think it doesn't already occur to women to be doctors and researchers?" "What makes you think I don't take an interest in my daughter's academic career and want her to be whatever she wants to be?" not to mention, "What makes you think I can't build my own fucking boat?"

OK I'm done. Just I've never felt so patronized at being called a "lady" which is a term that does not usually bother me. I'm overreacting I'm sure.

Eh, that bugs me too. I mean, I totally get the need for more women in the sciences and that some girls get turned off anything math related because it's seen as more "for boys" but some people Just. Aren't. Interested. In. Science.

I actually had someone ask me why I didn't go into science or something "hard" because hey, I'm smart. Maybe because I like history better. And who said the social sciences and humanities can't be hard?

I have, actually. Wouldn't mind reading it again, because, IIRC, I enjoyed it alot (at least, I found it rather amusing and a bit of a change of pace from the other SF/Fantasy that was in the (multi-author IIRC) anthology I read it in). Unfortunatly, I don't remember where I read it.

Wow, I'm surprised.

Where I live the trend has been an ever-increasing number of women in medical school. Since I was in first year the ratio of each batch was something like 60/40 and that keeps getting more skewed as your year level progresses. Batch 2006 graduated something like 70/30.

I find the original meta'd quote, while not wank-worthy, worth a mild "bitch, please".

1) It's not like they were looking for Viagra when they discovered Viagra: It was supposed to be heart medication. The boner-inducing properties were a side effect.

2) If men could mensturate, we wouldn't really be men, would we?

That being said, I've now discovered that Hyperbole Is Serious Business. I'm sure that knowledge will come in handy some day.

I firmly believe that anyone who gets pregnant while on the pill was using it incorrectly because they didn't bother to thoroughly read the information packet that comes with it. There are many ways to fuck up the pill, but they are all easily avoidable if you know about them and read medicine bottles carefully.

The post also shows an alarming lack of knowledge as to why women menstrate and why stopping it is a bad idea. Female reproductive organs need to clean themselves out.

Oh yes, lets clean out the reproductive organs with blood.

Maybe he meant that it would be a bad idea for the uterus to keep the same blood filled lining around forever, so after its been around for a while with no activity it flushes it out and creates a new one. But then, if menstruation was stopped, you wouldn't get the blood filled lining in the first place.

It sure felt like exsanguination to me every month, especially after becoming anemic enough that walking a block tired me out and left me gasping for air.

There was no need for me to preserve my fertility, nor did I feel like my femininity would be compromised *snort* so I got the damn thing yanked. My only complaint is how annoying it is to get PMS when I don't have a uterus any more!
