Chives or Bacon Bits?
Over in [info]mock_the_stupid, [info]tinaslion posts about a waiter that didn't know the difference between chives and bacon bits. At the end of post he mentions that he didn't tip the waiter.

Can you guess what happens next?

Mmhmm, because wages are the same every where, it's just the attitude that differs. Most American waiters don't get paid significantly less because tips are their salary.

What can I say? Tipping comments always bring good wank. You want to mock me now for getting excited over wanky behaviour? Fair enough.

I think it turned into an interesting discussion, actually.

Oh man. I am so sick of the tipping thing. I'm pretty sure a tip is actually meant to reward exemplary service. And anyway, as for the arguement that they get paid shit, well guess what? So do I. And I work in the service industry too. In fact, I'd say most waiters get paid MORE than me. No one cares enough about me to tip me though!

Do you get paid more than minimum wage, though? Because most servers make less than minimum wage as their base pay, with the expectation that they'll make the rest up in tips.

What I find interesting is how people theorize that restaurants would have to raise food prices if servers were paid the same min wage as everyone else. Here in Oregon, it doesn't cost any more to eat in a restaurant than it did back in Virginia - Oregon servers are paid regular min wage, while in Virginia they got that crappy server's wage of 2 something an hour.

Tipping wars annoy me.

I admit I'm a bit baffled by people who don't tip over little things (it just feels mean), but I recognize this doesn't apply to everyone. *shrugs* People have a right to interpret tipping laws as such. Most servers in major restaurants (excluding smaller ones) make a pretty penny on tips. For every asshole, there's also people like my boyfriend and I, who regularly tip 50% or more on the bill for a good meal, and between the two extremes, there are even more people who just tip a fair amount. One person isn't going to destroy the system.

So do bad tippers just drift from restaurant to restaurant? Seriously. Because waiters do recognize people. And I'm guessing that they have ways of exacting revenge.

The other day I ate out at a restaurant. As I was leaving, the person I assume to be the manager started chatting with me. He said, "Yeah, I've seen you come in before..." As he and the waitress ringing up my bill were very friendly and joking around with me, they probably remembered me as a good diner. I regularly tip 20 - 25% of the bill (that evening I think I tipped 30% or a little over...and I'm a poor out-of-college person). It's not 50% or anything extremely generous like that, but hey, they seemed happy with it. :)

See, what gets me is this exchange:

OP: [...] And once again, there were other issues with this server.
[info]fishgreenlittle: you probably should have put that in the original post. you make it seem like this is the only reason why you didn't tip. and if the service was that bad, you could have asked the manager for a new server.

The thing is... the OP was posting in mock_the_stupid, not bad_service. The waiter not knowing the difference between bacon and chives was fairly stupid, and might've been the only moronic thing the waiter did. Sure, it wasn't exactly bright to add on the line about not tipping if it's not the full story; but again, it's not really the community for telling the full tale of suck. Just stupid.

...truthfully, I've always been boggled by people that don't tip, but that's mainly because I kind of go in to a meal already figuring a 15% tip into the total. If they're really good, they might get more, but I think the absolute only time I left less was this woman who completely ignored my table because there were no men at it.

What I don't understand is why not tipping for bad service is the way to show a waiter/ess how bad their service is. Plenty of people fail to tip or tip badly because that's just how they do. (My cousin, for example, has had people call her manager over to say what a wonderful waitress she is and then leave her fifty cents on a forty dollar bill) Tip, because if you don't, the person you're stiffing is just going to think you're an asshole, if you get bad service speak to their manager because that's the only way they'll know (or begin to care) they've done something wrong. You'd never get docked in any other job for giving bad service, I fail to see why waiting tables should be any different, in fact, in any other job it'd be illegal to do that.
