Uh, what?

I'm so confused. What does killing a spider have to do with gender stereotypes? I mean, my husband does most of the spider evacuation/killing in our house, but that's because he's tall, not because I'm afraid of them!

That is, the ones that the cats don't catch and eat before he can get to them...

I can't handle spiders larger than a fingernail and smaller than a palm, but for some reason I can hold a tarantula. I think the speed of the smaller spiders is what gets me. That, and when they show up in my shower (I wear thick glasses/strong contacts, I cannot see things clearly unless they are two inches in front of me, and getting that close to a spider to realize it's a spider is scary as hell), or in my room above my bed. I've gotten a lot better with the years though.

But wow, bec_whosits was bringing the crazy. Sure, it's best not to kill spiders if they're the harmless kind... but unless you live in spider heaven you're not going to make a dent in them. Honest.

You know, some people just can't get close enough to do that. I can't even read more about them in this wank. The thought of it is literally making my palms sweaty right now. Horrible, paralyzing arachnophobia trumps logical thought about the usefulness or harmlessness of spiders any day. And it has nothing to do with being a scared woman. I'll pick up a snake or any kind of bug you can throw at me - or handle an emergency situation, for that matter - and not panic in the least, thank you very much.

Maybe it's just me, but at that point I'm not really concerned with kindness. War is hell, baby.

I can deal with the small ones, and Daddy Longlegs is welcome around my house, but anything big with thick legs (that isn't too obviously photoshopped, like my icon) has to go. My phobias are very picky.

I remember finding out about the Clock Spider one afternoon when I was supposed to be working and spending the rest of the day twitching. Those things are my phobias come to life. *shudders*

I'll fully admit to being a female and an arachnophobe. My mother too. You should have seen it when we were cleaning my apartment prior to my moving in and found a cupboard/wall gap that had a HOARDE of wolf spiders hiding in it. Even a daddy longlegs will leave me sitting on my bed or the back of the couch in hyperventilating tears.

That said, us being terrified of spiders? Not an example of an oppresive gender stereotype. It's us being fucking terrified of spiders. My dad's the same way about millipedes, minus the tears.

The story about the spider-killing was hilarious.

Just the other night I made my Dad kill a spider for me, but he was so inept and clumsy and I was like screw it, next time I see one (and there are a ton living around our house... I doubt there's danger of my family singlehandedly wiping out the spider population) I'm just gonna grab a shoe and do it myself.

I guess I just set feminism back 100 years.

Well, I'm an arachnophobe (actually anything buggy makes me hyperventilate but spiders are the worst) and I don't squash them!

But that's because I fear the hideous spider vengence of their spider kind. Not to mention you then have to clean DEAD SPIDER up. *shudders*

On the other hand, I sneer at bec_87rb and wonder if she'd be so understanding if she'd worked where I used to. There was an infestation of some strange, alien-looking spider-fly - we blamed either my boss who travelled widely in Cuba and Africa or the dance teacher who frequently visited her parents in the Phillipines for bringing them back. The spiders got EVERYWHERE. They had freaky little suckers on their feet so you couldn't blow or brush them away. And what they wanted more than anything in life was to crawl on you! I found them on my legs three or four times.

I actually had to go home early from work a couple of times after my boss reduced me to hysterics by telling me spiders were on me. (I knew he was lying but....SPIDERS!)

Fear of their vengence or not, I vacuumed those little buggers up whenever I saw them. If my boss hadn't opposed bug spray - and room fresheners and blow heaters and don't GET me started on what it was like in winter - I would have bug bombed that place.

Has anyone ever seen records of brown recluse bites? I stupidly, stupidly looked up a site on those for some biology report or another, and the photographs of reports labelled "Severe", "Very Severe", and "Death" sent me into a hysterical crying breakdown. I went to the teacher the next day and begged for another assignment, snake bites even.

I'm scared of spiders too, but it's bad luck to kill them where I'm from, so I just clench my teeth and toss them outside. They're not so bad, really. Cockroaches, on the other hand, make me run from the room screaming and hyperventilate in a corner. Compared to them, all other insects are like cute fluffy kittens.

My dad grew up in rural Yugoslavia, and my mom and grandma grew up poor in the Dominican Republic. They fear no creatures under God's bright sun. I once saw my dad kill a waterbug with his bare hand. It was on the wall and he just nonchalantly slaps it with the palm of his hand. I shuddered for days. I'm shuddering now. Eugggh. Bugs quite dissolve me of all reason. Even butterflies freak me out. Imagine a butterfly stripped of its wings. It'd be this little sausage-sized wiggling creepy-crawly... oh God I have to leave this post.

I am extremely frightened of spiders, and also moths. Other bugs? Whatever. But spiders and moths I can't stand. That being said, if one is foolish enough to set foot in my living space, it dies swiftly.

First of all: spiders are scary-ass fuckers and I will kill any that I see on sight on general principle; when I was about fifteen, a brown recluse bit me on the back of my thigh and I didn't realize it until I fainted in the middle of a swim meet. Went to the doctor's and there was a huge patch of rotted, black skin that WOULD have had to have been cut out if I had gone to the doctor's a day later.

SECOND of all, just as a general spider story, this morning when I went to class, there was a huge wolf spider on the floor of the room. Professor picked it up -- and about a GAJILLION little tiny wolfspider babies came out of it like a flood from spider hell.

(although we had quite some fun stepping on them all and explaining to my friend who came in late what all the little black dots on the floor were.)

While I can honestly say that I'm not really that scared of spiders, I do have a very vivid fear of bees and wasps.
And then, there is also an insect that I'm not so much afraid of as I just plain hate: CICADAS. I've been unfortunate enough to live in a town that saw a huge plague of them some ten years ago, and having been through that, all I can say is I hate them, Hate Them, HATE THEM.

I'm laughing at the connection between not liking spiders and being a great big wimpy girl.

I hate spiders but I handle locusts (google an adult one; these fuckers are creepy as hell), crickets, and all kinds of worms practically everyday in order to feed them to my pet lizard. I also co-own massive snakes and carnivorous lizards with my fiance, handle dead rodents frequently, and clean up boa poop. The latter is not something you can do if you're a/ squeamish, or b/ have a weak stomach.

But I *am* afraid of living mice, moths, and house-spiders.

So. . yeah. Not liking one kind of creepy thing does not mean one can't be totally 'hardcore' in other areas.

I used to want to be an austronaut. Part of it was because... hey, space, cool. Part of it? No joke -- no spiders in space. You could just hop into a space suit and jettison the fuckers.

Not even my undying love for Lord of the Rings could get me to watch the parts with Shelob. A friend thought it would be funny to tell me it was over right when she bites Frodo and I started sobbing and hyperventilating and nearly threw up.
