Phobias are bad, mmmkay?
zombie_slayer works in the pet department at Wallyworld, where they have these things called bala sharks. Exhibit A: the bala shark.

zombie_slayer: "I must state right now that I have a HUGE fear of sharks. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's a phobia."

So a customer wants some of these fishies, and zombie_slayer has to get someone else to help them. When zombie_slayer explains why s/he will not get the fishies, the customers think it's funny.
So does degeneratemite:

"I would have thought they simply had NO CLUE what a "bala shark" actually was and I am almost certain I would have thought it was a rather amusing misunderstanding. Fainting isn't funny, but fainting over a small, harmless fish? I wouldn't necessarily call it funny but I would certainly call it silly.

And, sorry, but some phobias are funny. They're defined as being "excessive and unreasonable." Excessive and unreasonable reactions to toast or belly buttons or Bjork or Wednesdays or whatever is funny. And bala sharks aren't even sharks. It's like claiming to have a phobia of horses and flipping out over a My Little Pony."

zombie_slayer does not think it's funny. But phobias amuse justapieceofme, so s/he gets into it with innsmouth_eyes.

But back to the poor opressed Harmonians phobics. evilart points out that bala sharks are not really sharks.

zombie_slayer: "Once again, ANY shark is bad to me. In my eyes, the only GOOD shark is a DEAD shark."

theboleynorchid: "Oh well that's a good view on living beings to have."

daiq: "See - as someone with a phobia - i was sympathetic until this point. Even my severely phobic of snakes mother (she actually passes out and vomits and the works) doesnt think they need to be dead."

lying_solitude: "Unfortunately, that's an extremely sad and unfounded thought pattern."

And there we have it, customers_suck_wank that is not about racism or breastfeeding or thebeergod. Amen.

I had a shark once. I didn't know it was a shark and I miss my other fish.

I..what? I understand that phobias are irrational and everything, but...but they're not sharks. They're not. They're called that because of the way they swim (glide like sharks) and their dorsal fin (ah...pointy).

Oh well, phobias aren't suppose to make sense.

I got to pet a live shark once, it was strangely cute, in a sort of not very cute lots of teeth kind of way. So I am totally about SHARK WANK! YAY! Anyway, zombie_slayer doesn't have a shark phobia, she has a logic phobia:

zombie_slayer: I'm scared of sharks!

evilart: But it's not a shark!

zombie_slayer: It doesn't matter, I'm scared of sharks! It says "shark" and thus I am scared, because I am scared of sharks!

I blame Jaws still, though, of couse, but that's just out of spite.

I joke about having to kill all the spiders in the world, because they're all out to get me and are plotting my demise, but it's more a way of sort of laughing off the phobia. Yes, I know it's irrational. Here's how irrational it is! And while I'd be happy if I never saw another spider again in my life, I don't want them destroyed as I realize they play a vital ecological role.

So OP is a wack job.

It's like claiming to have a phobia of horses and flipping out over a My Little Pony.

Well... yeah. It's a phobia. It's not logical. And I can't see someone with a phobia of horses being a big Pony fan, no.

We had an entire wank the other day about spiders, and people were freaking out - actual physical reactions, gag reflex, the whole thing - over just typing out the words. I can't see how that's all that different than being afraid of something just because it has the word "shark" in it.

If you're that afraid of "sharks", why would you work in the pet department? Isn't it common knowledge that Walmart sells fish, including these pseudo-sharks?

And, as someone with a very ridiculous phobia, I agree that phobias can be funny. I have a completely irrational fear of rabbits. Even cute widdle bunnies. I know it's silly, and I don't get all righteous and indignant when I'm made fun of for it.

My husband's got a phobia of sharks, when one comes on the TV he has to take his feet off of the floor.

Even _he's_ not afraid of bala sharks.

So I guess that Jaws game from twenty years ago, where you pick up bits of plastic junk with a tiny fishing pole, wouldn't be high on her list of fun ways to spend an afternoon.

The plastic shoe was my favorite.

I'll admit, when someone gives a graphical description of spiders (especially the mutant 16 legged spiders Stephen King is so fond of describing) I get the heebie jeebies, but I'm not afraid of spider monkeys.

The OP's questionable phobia of the bala sharks aside-- why the hell do so many people so passionately care? So some guy you'll never meet has a fear of sharks. So what? I highly doubt he's going to go looking for sharks and beat them to death with a spiked club or hand out poison shark treats or anything.

Sheesh.

As a phobic myself (actually, mine is motherfucking snakes, both on and off motherfucking planes), I must say that genuine phobias are quite dramatic. For example, when I so much as see a photograph of a snake, I damn near shit my pants and have a heart attack. This won't stop me from going to see Snakes on a Plane, as I like pleasure spiked with pain.

But this? This is not a phobia. It's asshattery.

Jesus, I have fish. And I wouldn't be afraid of a bala shark, which is a tiny little thing.

On the other hand, my female tomato clownfish? (yes, a relative of NEMO!) She's 7" long and takes dime-sized hunks out of you if you go too close to HER anemone, especially when she's spawning.

Then again, it's DIME sized, non lethal. We just move quickly.

I was waiting to see if this made it here.

I admit I would be WTF if the fish person was afraid of a fish because it had the word 'shark' in it. But then, i probably wouldn't know they had an honest phobia. As weird as some phobias seem to me, i do try to respect people with those problems because obviously, it's a big deal to them!

Oh, man, there's a thread discussing phone-related agoraphobia. And they sound just like me. Must. Not. Jump. In.

But really, it's so hard to find people who understand my particular and inconsistent fears about phone usage. I stopped seeing my last therapist because she just didn't get it. ><

In other news, as a phobic person I can confidently state that I understand phobias, and I have nothing but sympathy for anyone who lives with one, but the OP is a jackass on several levels. His fear of bala sharks is like if I were afraid of playing Chinese telephone. Not a phone, not a shark. It's just a name, buddy.

I wonder how this shark phobia started.

Was she attacked by a shark?
Was it Jaws?
Did she receive a candy gram from a land shark? (There has to be people old enough around here to know what I'm talking about)
Did she lose all of her money to a pool shark?
Did she also go to school with a complete yutz nicknamed "Sharkey"?
Did the San Jose Sharks kick her dog?

Let's find out the root of the problem. Here lie down and tell me about your mother. Was she a shark?
