Tattoos = Addiction?
Well this is new! Found via a friend ranting on her LJ.

About a week ago, Dr. Phil did a show on Parenting Dilemmas. One guest brought her daughter onto the show because she used to be a fresh-faced all-American beauty, but now, with seven tattoos, she looks like a freak!

Over on the message boards, wank occurs the day after the episode airs. Most posters are angry that tattoos are seen in such a negative light, especially when it's only a form of self-expression. But by the second page, we have people running around saying that if God wanted us to have tattoos, we'd be born with them. And then poster ladybug11 shows up and posts that tattoos are bad and ugly and against God kthx!!!1 Several times.
Everyone seems to ignore her...for a while. But then luckynum13 has decided he's had enough by about page 4. And from there, it begins to devolve into a wankfest between lucky and ladybug for the rest of the page, with other posters throwing in their 2 cents every so often. Later on we get Bible passages from jeezlouez about not screwing with your body because it's a sin! By page 6, it seems to calm down, but ladybug keeps popping up to express her views.

All in all, a rather mild yet TL;DR kind of wank. It's currently at 24 pages, and seems to have fizzled out. But who knows?

Wait, you mean that people aren't born with tattoos? Damnit, anime lied to me!

I love the comments that tattoos are "unnatural", as we're not born with them.

It's not like we're born fully clothed either, but no-one seems to argue that underpants are ungodly. Quite the opposite, really...

Wow, yeah, better watch those tattooes. Next people will be piercing their ears, removing hair, changing their hair colour, and other permanent forms of individuality.

I also hate it when people bemoan 'ruining your perfect skin'. It's great when people dictate your life because your beauty must be used in the right way. For example, someone said I was 'wasting' my beautiful figure by wearing baggy clothes. I told her to fuck herself.

I just do not get it. I never have. What the fucking fuck difference does it make if your kid has brown, blonde, purple, or plaid hair, more tattoo showing than skin, or piercings everywhere possible? Or, for that matter, gay, straight or omnisexual. That is your kid's personal journey. You know, the one you birthed him or her to have? Shut up and be grateful you're along for the ride.

ladybug11 needs to be whacked over the head with a thesaurus. Maybe then she'll learn adjectives other than "ugly" and "nasty."

And I get really tired of everyone who thinks that tattoos are done for attention. If I wanted attention, I wouldn't have put mine on my back where it will almost always be covered by a shirt or my hair.

I'd so totally be covered in tattoos if I didn't cry and hyperventilate at the mere thought of needles. I think it'd be cool as shit to have a henna design, except permanent, down both hands, and if that makes me a Godless freak, then, apparently, I'd be in good company.

OK, really this is not the show about addictions, which he does periodically do (and my guilty pleasure is showing, sorry). This was a show called "Parenting Dilemmas." You can see the show title and a synopsis at the top of the linked comment page. It was the mother who called her daughter addicted to tattoos.

You can also find pictures in the show archives, and ... yeah, you'd have to be pretty unused to tattoos to find that freaky looking. She's got ink over her collarbones and shoulders, looks like. Bright colors, but I can't see the designs. She said she wanted to cover both arms to the wrists. McGraw had a woman in the audience with similar-looking shoulder tattoos who is sorry now, but on the other hand, he does not seem to have harangued the girl herself. Or her mother for calling her a freak, so I'm not giving him props either.

Incidentally, she's no great beauty, though a perfectly OK looking young woman.

If those 'tattoos are teh EVOL' folks could only see what's on the other side of the phones when they call in for tech support.

I'm one of the rare few who doesn't have a tattoo, but that's because I'm still in the researching phase to see what I really want inked on me as well as finding someone with the skill to do it proper.

Just about every tech (and even goes for billing and retentions with some in sales) all have either a tatt, a piercing if not multiples, scarrification or are either goth or punk, so there goes the rationale that any body modification is a sign of someone going down the tubes. My direct boss has piercings and tatts so it's the higher up execs who've got them as well.

[former religion major powers, activate!]

Strict Judaism says no tattoos, if I remember right, based on passages in the Old Testament. But the one chick I read who was all "zomg Jesus doesn't like tattoos!" needs to get her head out of her ass. According to general Christian doctrine, Christ negated most of the Old Testament for his followers - particularly the gobs and gobs of rules like that one. Post-Christ, Christians can eat shellfish, wear clothing that has more than one kind of fiber and, going by that, get tattoos.

Tattoos are unnatural because God didn't give them to us.

So, what about the people who are born with birth defects? That's perfectly acceptible in our society right? I mean, they were BORN with them so that means God gave it to them, right?

I realize you weren't born with a clue, but I'm sure it's not against God to get one.

Aside from the arguments against being "natural" that others have already mentioned, I feel compelled to add that I have a rather large tattoo on my right shoulderblade that has attracted many a compliment, from both young and old.

Sure, some people haven't liked it, but the people who do are the majority. I have been literally stopped in the street more times than I can count over it.

If anyone's interested: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/Keller/DSCF0013.jpg

I hate to seem all "dude, my ink is hot" but, really, all the arguments against tattoos are getting really old. I'm totally down with people not liking them, as they're certainly an acquired taste, but they really don't necessarily make you look stupid, poor, "ethnic" (a real comment, I swear), or godless. Really.

If this God chappie didn't want me to have tattoos, I'm quite sure he wouldn't have blessed me with a rather fantastic tattoo artist. Also possibly he wouldn't have waited until I was on my fourth tattoo to make it a hellaciously painful experience.

Also, these people need to get with the times. Tattoos are rather mainstream now. Hell, I'm technically not supposed to show any body mods at my work (in a health food store), but my boss doesn't make me take out my labret and he figures that the collars on our polo shirts are enough coverage for my neck piece. Hell, if our policy were actually enforced, the Korean War vet who works in our resource center would have to wear long sleeves year 'round. It's just not that shocking at this point. The most shocking thing about my tats is that they're all fandom-based, and that's only shocking in a "wow, you're kind of sad" sort of way.
