I think it's time to quote Brust. This is from The Phoenix Guards; the narrator is explaining the etymology of "Bengloarafurd", the name of a town:
The first to discover the place were, according to legend, advance scouts of the House of the Dragon in the Fourth Cycle, who were in the vanguard of the Imperial Army which was anxious to drive the Easterners back beyond the mountains in hopes of reducing the raids to which the eastern boundaries were then being subjected. They followed the Climbing River down from the North, and found a shallow spot where there lived an independent tribe of Serioli.

What followed was ten years of almost constant war between the Dragonlords of the Empire and the Easterners, during which the Easterners occupied the area and fought from the surrounding mountains. The Serioli, who departed the area to avoid any of the unfortunate incidencts that war can produce, left only the name for the place, which was "Ben," meaning "ford" in their language. The Easterners called the place "Ben Ford,", or in the Eastern tongue, "Ben gazlo."

After ten years of fierce battle, the Imperial Army won a great victory on the spot, driving the EAsterners well back into the mountains. The Dragonlords who had found the place, then, began calling it "Bengazlo Ford." The Dragons, wishing to waste as little time on speech as possible, shortened this to Benglo Ford, or, in the tongue of the Dragon, which was still in use at the time, "Benglo ara." Eventually, over the course of the millenia, the tongue of the Dragon fell out of use, and the Northwestern language gained preeminence, which rendered the location Bengloara Ford, which was eventually shorted to Bengloarafurd. The river crossing became Bengloarafurd Ford..." (all typos mine)

In other words, inaccuracies, redundancies, and general craziness make language fun. Why do these people hate fun?

Ooh, I bet he stole that from was inspired by Torpenhowe Hill. (A place somewhere in Great Britain -- all parts of the name mean "hill". I don't remember where I heard about it.)

You reminded me I need to read some Brust, though.

Wow, the "fajita" part is the most annoying. So the word originally referred to a cut of beef. Now it refers to a dish/way of cooking, but that is just too much to handle! Words can't be used differently like that!

I work at a Taco Time in Canada (slightly different menu from the U.S., so no one ask me about the America menu), and we started calling anything rolled up a burrito a while back.

These people strike me as related to the types who will come up, demand a "soft taco," (rolled) and then even after I've told them EVERY INGREDIENT in the Super Beef Burrito (beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato and sour cream), will refuse to order it because "Burritos have beans or rice. I don't want THAT." So they order the wrong item - insist on it! - and then come back and complain.

Accept that language use changes, people. Your life will be less stressful, and everyone else will want to strangle you less often.

*reaches for handi-wipe*

Gawd, thank you. I'm sitting here reading this and thinking, as I go further and further into the wank, "are these people completely fucknuts?" Because there arent enough words to describe what is wrong with shrimp fajitas wtf.

And then [info]doorinward posted about wee little soy cows, and everything was ok again.

One of the posters in there, [info]kwanboa, keeps showing up on the comms I'm in, being kind of wanky. She jumped down someone's throat a day or two ago in little_details for daring to add further information to her comment. Would it be tacky to set up a pool on how long it takes for her to get her own wank report?
